I'm not sure what type of medical treatment Iris got but there are many alternative routes these days that are wonderful and don't require some of the chemo and radiation treatments that can actually create more problems. A lot depends on what type of cancer and how early one is diagnosed.

If Iris can get the word out to get checked especially women whose family history has cancer, you can get non-evasive mammograms using thermal imagine technology where you don't have to get "squished" to get checked.

It goes for colonoscopies for men. Again digital scans are half the cost and nearly 100 percent accurate.

Here's to good health and a long life Iris.

Wow, Cochise... I am astounded at your meanness.

Iris took a profoundly difficult life event and went out on a limb to help others. She is a human being of extraordinary joy and beauty.

First of all, thank you to Kent for getting the word out via this thread. Any money raised for the Children's Cancer Association is a wonderful thing. They do such great work with families who have to hear the word CANCER in relation to their kids. It's something that is hard to deal with for anyone, and the kids and families from C.C.A. do it with grace and great poise.

As far as any negative comments go, no worries. I am a woman of size, from a long line of them, and I am currently in process of taking it off slowly and in a healthy manner. There are many reasons for "why" but it really doesn't matter. Let's just say that cancer, and not my own, started a grieving process long ago...and everyone deals with pain in different ways. Having cancer myself was certainly a wake up call, about getting healthy, and doing for others who had to take the same journey.

So, everyone, settle down. This really isn't about me...it's about raising money for the Children's Cancer Association. If you can make it to the event, I'd love to have you there to say thank you for the support for the families who are aided by the C.C.A.

Thank you!

Iris

I registered for this board a long time ago and have never posted before now. But I just have to say at this point how phenomenally cool it is to be able to read personal messages from some of the GREATS in PDX radio. I could name names, and I'd probably miss some (some because of my memory and others because I don't know who lives behind the nom de screen.

Iris - you have always been awesome. Chris and Iris in the morning was one of my favorite shows!

You make a difference - and in a good way.

Iris, you are a local treasure. Few personalities in the country have made such a resonant impact on so many lives, both in and out of music. I was one of the lucky ones who were infected by the Mono Maniacs and I have enjoyed hearing you ever since.

Thank you for sharing yourself with us for so long. While you were battling, you had to sense that even the atheists and agnostics were praying for you. It did not surprise me a bit that you would go to bat for the kids after your experience, and it gives me the major warm fuzzies -- just like it did when you returned triumphant with a rousing Elton John tune. :0)

As for the troll, ignore the poor creature. His crush on Kate Moss makes him unreasonable. He dreams of feeding her carrots while she runs on the wheel in her cage. The rest of us tend to like women who are warm, pretty and curvy, like a nice stretch of Oregon road in the summertime. Along the shoulder every few miles is a waterfall and a big yellow sign that says: KGON ROCKS

I don't usually "Band Wagon" as I know what I feel and that is usually good enough for me but, In this case, I have to. I had business at Entercom today and when I saw Iris I had to say Hi.I have met her numerous times before but since we have mutual friends and I just wanted to say welcome back from her victorious fight, I did. I walked right in to the studio unannounced to speak to her and unlike many jocks I was welcomed with open arms. Iris your are truly a "CLASS ACT" and I want to thank you for that. In this day and age you are the acception not the rule.KGON rocks but you kick ass. Keep me informed on the people we talked about and know we are all out here listening.

I must take exception to Chris Taylor's post about colonoscopies "FOR MEN"! As a 12 year survivor of colorectal cancer, and having read trainloads of info... I can assure everyone on this board that colorectal cancer is not "for men"... its for everyone. My surgeon even noted that colorectal cancer is the default assumption when a new patient arrives with bowel problems who is "4F".... Fair, Fat, Female, and Forty."

And as late as last month, many reputable cancer centers were stating that while a positive development, colonography was not nearly as thorough as colonoscopy. And any problems or suspicions noted on a colonography are immediately checked out via colonoscopy.

"While promising as an up-and-coming technology, CT colonography does not appear to be a slam dunk and is not yet ready to replace colonoscopy as the screening test of choice."

Abolutely everyone should have a colonoscopy by age 40 if there's any history of colon or rectal cancer in the family, and by 50 regardless. (And a flexible sigmoidoscopy is about as lame as having only 1 boob mamo'd!) Both the colonoscopy and colonography require bowel prep... which is the unpleasant part. For the actual scoping... you're so stoned on valium you really couldn't care less.

"Bottom" line -- Dont Die of Embarrassment!

Tdanner- duly noted.

I was only offering up what technology is now providing. The next 10-30 years we'll see amazing advancement in the field of medicine, particularly in the diagnoses of many of today's big diseases. Family genes are critical for sure.

There are blood tests that can actually map out what you may encounter years from now, like Alzheimer's. Best course of action is preventative measures and doing all the right maintenance, but even that doesn't assure you anything. But it does help and in some cases dramatically.

Having just gone through a physical exam it's somewhat top of mind.

Alternative medicines (which have been around in many cases thousands of years) have long proven track records. Do your homework, ask loads of questions and don't settle for just one opinion. Also set a high standard for your own personal health.

Terry I appreciate you taking me to task. Education is vital.

It's not me who you need worry about. You may have an issue with BrianL however. He has a mancrush on Neal Peart.
BTW, have you heard about the concert extension into 2008. Additional 46 shows on the Snakes and Arrows tour. This will be to cover the missed locations on the first trip through so looks like a road trip will be in order!

Actually the Rush fanfare belongs right here, because I adore the band and was touched and amazed that the WHOLE band signed the book. Most of the items donated for the silent auction came from friends, former co-workers, and listeners. I'm filled with joy that this will bring money to CCA.

Tommy Shaw, JY, and the current members of Styx signed a guitar for the auction when they found out that the proceeds were going to CCA.

Bret Harrison, who is starring in the CW show "Reaper" sent a cast signed script from the pilot episode since he couldn't make it to the event. He found out through his step father who listens to KGON and wanted to do something.

My friend Matt Souther donated the most amazing Fender replica coffee table from "Overkill Designs." There's already a bidding war in the office for that one!

Yesterday while I was on the air, I got a call that made this event even more important to me. A gentleman called and thanked me for doing this for CCA because they were there for his family when his daughter was diagnosed with cancer. They made the process bearable for a family that would have to eventually deal with the passing of their child. Those words will stay with me forever.

A big thank you also goes to Nelson and Terry who continue to work for CCA and even invited me to come on their show and talk about Saturday's event.

If you are on this board and can come to the event on Saturday, thank you so very much for supporting the cause. Please make a point of introducing yourself and if you will divulge your screen name, that would be great!

TD, I'm having that "procedure" next month and reading your words made me look forward to it...sort of. At least I know I'm doing the right thing.

Jeffrey, you will always be one of my favorite jocks because of your unique and brilliant way with words and different view of any situation. I'll never ever forget that you trained me on how to shut down KVAN at the end of the broadcast day, right before you left for Fresno. Plus, the time I got to hang out with you in the studio in Fresno when I was down there on a road trip. Good times!

Darktemper, I'll see you at Miriam's graduation. Georganne graduates on November 17th. We're so proud of those pups.

Average Joe, I found out that Ken O'brien is doing well and still in Kansas City, even working part time on the Classic Rock station there.

Please excuse the personal messages, but since they were brought up here, just thought I'd answer here.

I'm thankful for every year I've been able to spend in this amazing city, and for every person who has made that journey as full and entertaining as one woman could hope for.
