My good friend and fellow OFC member Tom Murphy contacted me a told me the Portland radio guys were discussing some of the Northwest promo people and my name had been mentioned. I checked out the posts and it sure brought back a lot of great memories of the years that I was the Capitol Records promo dude for the NW. I retired from Capitol Records at the end of '98 after 24 years with the company. Prior to that I had worked in NW radio from 1960 to 1975 and also during that time I was a concert promoter and musician. Since retiring my wife and I lived in the NW for 6 months a year and spent the winter 6 months at our other home in La Quinta, CA (Palm Springs area). Obviously I was playing a lot of golf...but I also starting playing music again (keyboards/vocals) for fun and profit. Last October we decided we wanted to live full-time in the desert so we sold our NW home and headed to La Quinta year 'round. We love it here...gets a bit hot in July and August but the rest of the time the weather is the best. I am playing lots of music doing a 50s/60s/70s solo piano act billed as Stan the Man An Old Time Rock n Roll Dance Party. I work as much as I want doing country clubs, private parties, and restaurant/lounges. The rest of the time I golf. It's a great life and I love it. I do want to say thanks to all of you in radio who I got to know and be friends with. We had some great times during the golden age of the radio/record business. As you know both industries have totally changed in the past 10 years. Not for the better in my opinion. So again, thank you for making my career at Capitol a really wonderful time in my life. It was a great ride. Stan the Man (StanForeman@comcast.net)

Good to see your posting, Stan!

I've known Stan for a long time, whom I met through my Father Roger Hart. Stan was cool and a class act!

My Favorite Stan Foreman memories: I remember eating late night at 13 Coins with my Father, Stan, & Kent Morrill of the Wailers just listening to old stories. And you got me into Radio Head at La Luna!

See you soon, Stan!

.................KGHO Aberdeen...............

Thats what I remember about Stan Forman. Before I was in Broadcast Radio, just a student at Grays Harbor Community College with a partime job at the Aberdeen World Newspaper. Stan was the PD @ KGHO and in touch with the Top 40 Rock and Roll community on the Harbor. Great station back then, I loved the hard edged programming with a touch of redneck rock , like "Who Do you Love", by Tom Rush...try and find that version now! I have tried and still cant find it....

I went to a concert up at the Harboreena in Hoquiam one time where Merilee Rush and the Turnabouts were featured. Seems to me in the adolesent haze of that evening's first flush of ETOH, Merilee took all or most of her cloths OFF...And as I remember Stan had a lot to do with getting that band to Gray's Harbor !

Years later , working for Oldies AM 960 KALE in the Tri-Cities I talked to Merilee about that concert, as she was up for one Richland's Sunfest concerts in the Park ...She turned a couple of shades of pink and laughed it off as her carefree young and crazy phase...LOL..it was all in fun anyhow.. They had a great show that year.

I walk 47 miles of barbwire and use a cobra snake for a necktie...WHO DO YA LOVE !!!!!!

Used to live for that tune to come on KGHO so I could crank up my vacuum tube radio in my 1958 Chevy Biscayne, 235 cu. in line 6 cylinder leakin' oil all the way down Hwy 12 thru Central Park...singin " Im just 22 and I dont mind dyin'..WHO DO YAH LOVE !!!!!!

Stan...Just wanted to say that by far you were the best record promo person I ever dealt with. It didn't matter that I was at a small market station, you treated me just the same as my counterparts in much larger markets. That was not always the approach by others in your industry. Good to hear you're doing well and livin' large!

Stan, thanks for posting. I just want to echo Bill's sentiment. Thanks for helping us out at KMAS back in the late 70's early 80's. No free dinners for me, but you always kept us stocked and thanks for that. You are truly THE MAN!

Glad you're enjoying your "retirement".

Ron

Thanks for the nice comments. Since I started my radio/record career in the small markets I too never forgot the record guys who returned my calls and took care of me and vowed that when I got in record promotion I would do the same. And it was amazing how many of the small market PDs ended up in the larger NW markets and then on to national fame. They always took my calls and many times added records for me because they remembered that I took care of them when they were the "little guys". Regarding the Merillee Rush comments....Steve West and I were partners in a company called S&S Promotions for many years and promoted hundreds of dances and concerts. We even did a Beach Boys show back in '64 brining them into Hoquiam, WA when Brian Wilson was still touring with the band and playing bass. We used all the top NW acts including the Wailers, Paul Revere, Viceroys, Kingsmen, Merillee, Statics, Dynamics, etc and also many of the national touring groups including the Sunrays, Them, Brian Hyland, Dick & Dede, Swinging Medallions, etc. We could buy those bands back in the '60s for $500 a night and these were bands that had hits. Later in the 60s I was involved with Seattle/Mercer Dances and we used groups like Sugarloaf, the Guess Who, and the bands of the late 60s and early 70s. I have many fond memories of my Capitol Record days and it is always fun to hear back from the radio guys who I worked with. Again, thanks for the nice words. And speaking of KGHO, you did have to walk 47 miles of barbwire and wear a cobra snake for a necktie to be on that staff. That was one of the best sounding small market stations in the country if I do say so myself.

Stan...your posting regarding "booking bands for $500 a night" reminds me of a story I heard my Father(Roger Hart) give last week as he was interviewed by Phil Stanford.

He mentioned that a booking company out of Seattle was only willing to pay $500 for Paul Revere, in which my Father said "No, more money is needed". A few months later due to the hits and TV exposure you could book Paul Revere for about $25,000. That was about '65.

I'm guessing based on the $500 rate that could of been you! Good Times!

Hi Alex...I did book Paul for the first time in 1964. S&S Promotions (owned by Steve West and myself) paid Revere $300 against 50% of the gross. We put 'em in the Aberdeen Armory and had about 2,000 paid at $3 per. Paul walked with $3,000 and we made about $2500 after expenses. When we brought the Beach Boys in back in '64 we paid them $2250 flat...and no rider other than transportation to and from SeaTac airport. Unheard of by today's standards. Those certainly were the good ol' days.
