Wow, read these quotes from Retired Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, who led U.S. forces in Iraq for a year ". . . going to war with a "catastrophically flawed" plan" ". . . the United States is "living a nightmare with no end in sight." "There has been a glaring unfortunate display of incompetent strategic leadership within our national leaders." "[the National Security Council is] negligent and incompetent" "The best we can do with this flawed approach is stave off defeat," ". . . There is nothing going on in Washington that would give us hope." From The Washington Post

The Bush Administration firing ANYONE for incompetence is funny at best. Pot. Kettle. Black. I'm guessing that Sanchez was shown the door because he probably reached a point where he refused to be a pawn, a yes-man in the Bush Regime of Incompetence, and was therefore shown the door. He isn't a "flaming libs poster boy", he's telling it as he sees it, and for Gods sakes he's telling the truth. Do we REALLY have to throw in this "It's a liberal thing" crap, Deane? Did Wayne work his way back into the fold here?

Lt gen Sacnchez was given an almost free hand, he devised most of the military policy, he failed, that happens, Lincoln had a whole string of generals that failed, before he found some that got it right. Sanchez was a good corps commander, and he has the right to say what he thinks. But peopple need to put it in context.

You're right about Lincoln and his generals. But Bush is surely no Abraham Lincoln and Iraq isn't the US Civil War. When Lincoln realized that his first Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, was a disaster, he dumped him early on and replaced him with Edwin Stanton, who did a terrific job. Bush on the other hand stuck with the incompetent Rumsfeld for years too long, and that cost all of us dearly. Had Lincoln kept Cameron on for another few years, it's not inconceivable that the Union would not have survived the war, no matter which generals were found. Had Bush fired Rumsfeld quickly and made other decisions differently in 2003, Iraq might have turned out differently. Andrew

Some more of Lt Gen Sanches remarks "He said some poor strategic decisions in Iraq had become “defeats because of the media,” and that some reporters feed from a “pigs’ trough.” He lamented the media’s treatment of Federal Emergency Management chief Michael Brown during Hurricane Katrina. Brown resigned from FEMA after accusations that he had mishandled the hurricane."

It's spon on as far as accuracy of issues addressed. It's bad in the sense that it doesn't help build support for the war. Oh well. I'll take reality over false hope anyday.

Nwokie, the last general to be given a free hand in fighting a war was Eisenhower. That is why we have never won a war since then. Gen. S, will soon be followed by Gen. P, when his time is up and he can speak freely.

Eisenhower wasn't put in charge until 1944, and eveb then Marshal kept hand in things. Last general to have a relative free hand was Grant. But President Bush has given his commnders more of a say, than anyone since.
