I tried it with unexpected results this weekend in College Park, MD... with very unsatisfactory results. (yeah, I know it's not PDX radio, but I claim immunity from the purists!)

So I'm 5 rows from the top at Byrd Stadium, with a commanding view to the south. Without the haze I might have seen the Capitol or the Washignton Monument. But Maryland's DC flagship station is WJFK, an FM licensed to Manassas, Virginia. With my Sony walkman on 'local,' I got a decent signal so long as I stayed absolutely still. On 'DX,' I got interferance and splatter.
But all that was moot because good ol' WJFK, a 'hot talk' station that's home to Don and Mike, WAS IN DELAY!!! The play-by-play was exactly one play behind real life.
But all was not lost. The Georgia Tech radio guys were doing the same sort of 'cheating' that the Oregon Ducks Network does: using 1 or 2 watt FM transmitter on a bit of spare space on the commercial FM band to provide 'air' to their sideline reporter. So l listened to real-time pbp in College Park courtesy of the Ramblin' Wrecks.
I know it's not a huge thing when it comes to your cume, but it just seems like something you'd want to do for your fans: make sure they can hear the damn game inside the damn stadium.
But that's just me, I guess....

PS: I actually could still hear the Georgia Tech broadcast in my car radio until just before I drove off campus - nearly a mile from the stadium! And WJFK was still spotty in College Park, so I switched over the XM, and listened to the great Johnny Holiday all the way home clear as a bell.

When I go to games(BC Lions, Canucks, Winter Hawks) I always bring a radio to listen to the games with differing results.

I think that BC Place has a little 20 watt auxilliary AM x-mitter thet rebroadcasts the game inside the BC Place "balloon" for the Lions games...reception was decent the last time I was there. No delay.

GM Place was lousy for reception a couple of years ago(the last time I went to a Canucks game) but there was no delay.(I think the games were still on CKNW 980 at that time, they have since swithced to Team 1040)

Memorial Coliseum has greatly improved their radio system since last year for the Winter Hawks games. At the beginning of last season, they only broadcast the games over the Internet--no over the air station--except for a VERY poor audio feed from the board at the MC. Sucky, hum-filled, tinny, practically unlistenable audio over a very weak FM transmitter in arena :-( This season has greatly improved audio on their in stadium FM transmitter and also decent receivable audio on their partner station KKAD 1550--I used the cheapest handheld portable radio Grundig makes and was hearing the broadcast on 1550 loud and clear in the MC.

I'm with you...delay needs to be turned off during events like a game. The only problem today is that with all of the digital codecs in use in a typical station today, there seems to be a lot of latency introduced, even without the "7 second" profanity delay. Just the audio processing and digital combination stereo/RBDS generator at our LPFM introduces at least 1 to 1.5 seconds of latency to our live broadcasts...enough so that off-air monitoring is impossible!

BTW, I'm going to CFL's Grey Cup in Toronto this year--I'll have to check how radio reception of the game is at the Rogers Centre(SkyDome). I imagine that they will have the roof closed--Toronto in late November--might be a bit chilly. :-)

You can blame this not only on HD Radio's required delay, but also on Janet Jackson's "Nipplegate" incident. Profanity delay is needed so an incidental expletive spewed by a drunk fan isn't rebroadcasted on 40 stations.

I bet we'll see more venues buying Part 15 transmitters to get a non-delayed feed into the stadiums.

Had the same experience trying to listen to the only Phoenix Suns game I went to last year. The delay was unbearable.

If I get D-Backs playoff tix, I can only expect the same problem...I couldn't even sync up radio sound to the TV picture...BOTH had delays that were different!

IBOC gets only some of the blame...Now there's that "fleeting profanity" mess that the FCC just added to the mix...

Maybe civility will come back in style? (I can dream, can't I?)

All I can say is that if for some reason the rebroadcast of KXL isn't working in the Rose Garden, I have a steady stream of less-than-happy Blazer fans coming by the broadcast position to complain. Not my responsibility to maintain the in-house signal, but we get a pretty good idea of how many people are trying to listen when it doesn't work.
