The McMinnville News-Register did a front-story article on KUFO's Cort Webber in today's edition. KLYC shoulda' grabbed him "back when"...

There's been a LOT of things KLYC shoulda grabbed way before someone like Cort Webber.

New, community-minded ownership would be real high on the list.

As I looked at the article, and read Outsiders comments, I thought about a situation like that existing back when we had KCYX. Fact of the matter was, the Linfield College station didn't get those folks, KCYX did.

Anyone showing real promise was sent by Craig Singletary (head of the Linfield radio department) to us for a paying job. We got some great ones that helped KCYX have the small market reputation it did, and they got paid to learn a lot while in college.

That was the advantage of a fully live operation. Was there a disadvantage? Certainly was.....it cost a lot of money.

We had the same situation at my campus station KWRS in Spokane. Those students who really applied themselves would get part time gigs in town.
