The Fan sucks. Nobody cares any more. Jim Rome has lost fans; hell Houston, Texas has four sports stations! So, why can't Portland [have] two Sports stations?

Mtotzak2-
You are cracking me up.

This reminds me of the scene from the movie "Airplane" where a stewardess is trying to talk to the two African-American guys and they can't seem to communicate with the attendant until the older white lady tells the stewardess " I speak jive."

To answer the question... because Houston has 3 major sports teams, and Portland only has 1. It's hard to come up with that much Blazers coverage.

It is nice to see our local poseur and bigot is having fun with Ebonics again.

As I recall, the "older white lady" in Airplane was Barbara Billingsley from Leave it to Beaver.

Houston has a feeble transit system, no sidewalks, and very high murder and cancer rates. It is also one of the ugliest metropolitan areas in the world.

Let's be as un-Houston-like as possible.

Getting back to the original post, I agree another all sports talk radio would be refreshing voice and not a part time station like KXL. Even the faint signal that comes up from salem 1390 I listen to when the Sinking ship known as the Mariners is on. Another format is needed but unfortunatly so are a few more MAJOR sports teams.

Here's a great source for local High School sports activities. I think it's fairly new but will grow rapidly. At first glance it looks like a great way for kids and parents to be more involved in their kids sports activities. Great way to foster and promote school spirit! Take a look.....what do you think?

Rick-The Winterhawks and Lumberjax both did internet-only last year and i know the Hawks have a deal next year with KKAD, so it obviously didnt work for them. The Jax, since lacrosse is more of a "see it in person" sport, shouldnt matter, but i would be hard pressed to see it work over the course of a full season of baseball...

i dont neccesarily think we need a second sports station in the market, just one thats actually done well....which odds are, may never be KFXX, one of the biggest jokes nationally in sports talk radio...

NP. Does not look very active yet but that may change. At least it gives someting positive to spend their time on while on the internet. Except for those that will likely abuse it! But it is a good idea at least. I just fear that uless everything clears through a moderator first it will wind up with unwanted material.

Be thankful it wasn't on last night. That was as bad as football gets. The only saving grace was that I got paid to board op it.

Any football game is better than baseball, even high school football.

The Mariners where on 1080.

To address a couple of the earlier posts in this thread, can someone give a credible argument as to why we should expect 1080 The Fan to be so much better than it is? I am not saying it is the greatest sports station in the country or even a good one, but personally I think this type of one-sided Fan-bashing is unwarranted.

This is a one-sports town and its passion for its one sport has been rekindled only recently. So, there hasn't been much to talk about locally for quite a while now.

It's also a very liberal west-coast city, eg it doesn't live and die with its sports team(s) like the cities of the NE do.

So, I think the product in this case matches the public's attention and demand.

My chief complaint would be the absence of local, live talent (I actually don't think the afternoon show on 1080 is that bad). But as far as local, live talk goes, I think that is epidemic here and most everywhere else. It's just cheaper to plug in a national show than pour money into local talent.

My probably with the local talent on The Fan is that they try to be to much like Canzano. They say things just to get people fired up, instead of speaking the truth or how they really feel... especially Big Suke. I like Ropp, but Suke's gotta go.

Yes, I love radio. But I cannot stand LISTENING to sports. I NEED video. I guess it's because I'm from the younger "visual" generation. Although I remember my family would turn on Bill Schonelly(sp?) on KEX while we watched the Blazer game on TV when I was a kid! The cable TV system created a slight delay over the live radio, so we'd hear the "swish" before we saw it, but it was still better than listening to the dopey TV announcers.

One of the reasons I listened to the fan so much when I was in Portland was because it was an alternative to political talk radio that is on talk radio just about every where else.

That's the big reason my dad listens to it a lot too.

The fact that both he and I are big sports fans is almost secondary, to tell the truth.

Sometimes I want a break from music radio. I do like talk radio. I'm just so turned off by politics in general that political talk radio just doesn't do anything for me.

I've loved the Fan since day one, and still love the station today.

If there was another talk option that wasn't politically charged I'd probably listen to that as well. (I did listen to Rick Emerson on occasion as well for this reason.)
