Here’s an alphabetical listing of all the formats in Arbitron's Spring 2007 reports for persons 12+, representing winter '07-spring '07: AC: 13.9-14.0 Adult Hits(Jack and friends): 2.7-2.7 Adult Standards: 1.0-1.0 CHR/Top 40: 10.8-10.9 Classical: 1.1-1.0 Country: 9.2-9.7 Oldies/Classic Hits: 5.5-5.5 News/Talk: 17.4-17.4 Rock: 7.4-7.9 Smooth Jazz: 2.8-2.8 Spanish: 11.9-11.0 Urban: 9.9-9.8 Keep in mind (pleeeese DJfreeeesh) that Portland has a very very small Urban/Black population, compared to the rest of Arbitron's markets. Urban stations traditionally get more than 95% of their cume and AQH from Black/African-American listeners.

Seriously, to back up what Tdanner says, let's remember: in the Arbitron world, whether measured by diaries or meters, you need a certain percentage of the population (say, 10-15%) in your fan base ... and an on-air product that will get the average member of that 10-15% listening an hour a day. We can all come up with stations that will make SOMEONE listen for hours a day. It's making 1 out of 7 or 8 people listen that's the tough part.

I wonder how many people of all races and creeds in Portland believe or have some interest in the Paranormal? Like I said in another list, KSFI or some such adaptation K-SCI_FI...Rod Serling, Orson Welles, Art Bell ish world of Hauntings, UFOS, BIGFOOT,on air Psychics, Dec 21, 2012 end of the world Y2K type hysteria, nightly old timey CBS Mystery Theatre type productions. I am not sure if this has been tried with consistency and in a 21 st century style anywhere else. You could build a quirky macabre listener base and included could be a silent majority of people who listen that are still "in the closet" so to speak. Lots of fodder for the 18 to 34 Goths, Astrologer grandmas or regular folks who like to be up on the latest news of the wierd and bizzare. There would be a plethora of content for some kind of format like this. It could be all over the road...

I wonder how many people of all races and creeds in Portland believe or have some interest in the Paranormal? My guess is now they're all listening to Clyde Lewis' online shows.

Are you sure African-Americans make up 95% of the radio audience for urban/hip-hop? It's long been recognized that whites buy the largest share of CDs in that genre. Also, where is Adult Alternative on this list? (KINK seems pretty solid year-to-year, but maybe that's just Portland).

I too think that statement needs some qualification. Perhaps "Urban" and "CHR Rhythm" are considered separately? And really, what is the difference between the two? San Francisco's KSOL ("K-Soul") claimed to have a 65 percent white audience in the early 1980s, in the time frame that they were the #1 music station. This was before KMEL picked up a substantial part of the younger white audience.

"Urban" is aimed directly at the lifestyles of African-Americans and does not generally appeal to anyone else. "CHR/Rhythm" is more mainstream.
