Just heard the new "Humanity" song from the Scorps on... KGON. Another great song, just like "Far Cry" from Rush earlier this year, on a station that people used to complain only played the same songs everyday. Amazing that some of the best new stuff out there are from bands that've been doing it for years. Although I personally don't like it that I sometimes turn on KGON and hear Bon Jovi and even think that U2 and Talking Heads sound out of place on the station, it's great to hear something that's not either 'soft alternative' or strait-up AC, like so many other stations are playing these days. Thank you, KGON.

I've always thought Classic Rock stations were missing the boat by not including a small number of new songs by the established artists whose old stuff gets played daily.

Ok Here is my thought! Most Classic Rock bands that put out new stuff,it is Absolute Buffalo poop- IE- The Rolling Stones! Have you hear their new stuff??? It is absolute crap!! Im a huge Stones Fan and Im almost embarrassed that they would realease such garbage!!! Bon Jovi- Ok I will admit I was always a big fan of "you give love a bad name" and "living on a prayer", BUT have you heard his new single " You want to make a memory" ABSOLUTE CRAP! But every once in a while you will get a good classic rock band that is putting out good stuff, - RUSH! Continues to put out great new material! I'm honestly shocked that more stations are not playing the new Rush single!

Rush = greatness Def Leppard = solid performance Styx = different but good sounding Journey = echo above Sammy Hagar = Awesome Scorpions = Anxiously Awaiting New Release but expect it to ROCK ME LIKE A HURRICANE ETC...... There is tons of great material out there from the established headliners from old you just have to get the CD's and listen! Forget top40 cause even though some of this stuff is top40 material most will never get there cause other pop artists are being pushed so hard it overshadows this great material. I call this stuff "Limbo Rock" Not quite classic as far as it's age goes although from a classic rock group, not likley to hit new rock or alternative rock because most groups are not favored by that crowd. I have made a big investment in CD's this last year and a lot current stuff from classic groups. There is gold in these CD's waiting to get discovered, one has but to listen to them. Same as with older CD's as well. Some of you say that unfamiliar non-top40 music is who cares music but I say there is gold in them thar CD's that may not be top40 but every bit as valueable as it. Someone would not turn off their stereo if some of these songs started playing, I would not. I'd probably think, Wow, that song rocked, I ain't heard that one in a long time! It's fresh stuff and if you have someone with a good ear for stuff that is playable and fits with the stations image then why not go for it and freshen up the playlist a little. I'm not talking a radical change just a subtle one.

Far Cry is a good example of that. How long will it get played? Not long enough as war as I am concerned! And what about the rest of the album? That whole CD rocked! The Way the Wind Blows, The Main Monkey Musiness, Malignant Narcissism, etc. Once the tour is over and until they are due back the title track will fade and seldom get played. New material from classic rock bands is still classic rock! When Van Halen (current configuration) puts out some new stuff look for one or two tracks to get played while they are touring and in the spotlight then fade afterwards. Nature of the beast I guess, play what's hot when it's hot, but there is nothing wrong with leaving them in rotation. I still hear far cry but it's a far cry less than just prior to their concert at the AMP! Like Shannon Said, I left there saying: "OH MY GOD" what a concert! Would be nice to hear a little more metal from time to time as well.

In his sidebar about older albums, DT's articulated better what I've been trying to say: Why not give the deeply worn grooves in our brains a break from what's become permanently burned into our mental-aural wallpaper (turn off the radio, shut off the lights, and IT'S STILL THERE MAKE IT STOP THERE'S NO ESCAPE EYAAAAHH!!), and dig out some of the good stuff by top-x00's artists that's lain fallow for decades? I suggested a few months back that KLTH might try to sloganize their call-sign as "layered top hits" and work it into a theme (i.e., top-x00 tunes paired with related work that's long since slipped off the air). My more recent brainwave is to possibly visualize it as "from under the radar" (as contrasted to "way off the scope," which I might listen to intermittently but probably wouldn't sell, or "pop archeology," which only the obsessive would go for). Another overlooked source are tunes from top-chart artists' albums released in the couple of years prior to making their big smash. A decade or so ago a syndicated program played the whole Beatles catalog over a weekend. I've never been a big fan (outside of the White Album), but was impressed by the raw power of their early (pre-Invasion) stuff (something I noted PR&TR had some of after the B'hyls got silly). I've never been a big Dylan fan, for that matter, but discovering his very first (eponymous 1962) album in a small-town library (in 1972) was a both a surprise and a treat.

KGON is my station of choice for one main reason, it's people! Any station can dole out the tunes but they make it entertaining and fun to listen to. I may not always like what I hear and may offer up my two cents from time to time but if listeners never speak out for what they like how are they gonna know that? Hey Jeff. I recently got the complete Wooden Nickel recordings of Styx's early pre-Equinox stuff, good stuff. A little hard core purist stuff to catch air but a couple tunes would be fair to hear once in a while. You're right though that some stuff is just too deep for Joe average but its still good! Same with the missing Boston years with RTZ and Orion The Hunter. Good stuff for the faithful but most would not hold up very well.

Thats the problem I have with KGON, they play the same songs over and over! I find myself turning to Charlie because at least Charlie plays some of the newer artists. Although I do wish Charlie would get more air talent on that station. At times they sound rather lifeless with no jocks on the station

What other station/stations in PDX have live shows M-F from 10:00am till Midnight and have various live shows on the weekends? Betcha you can count them with one hand. I've said this before, the music is secondary, presentation, at least for me, is primary. If I don't enjoy what i'm listening to and nobody's home, there is nothing to keep me hanging on! My Zune is fully loaded and ready to go whenever I feel the need! And yes sometimes in a bad traffic snaffu I will take and crank up Pink Floyd "Division Bell" or "Momentary Lapse of Reason" in order to prevent my own!

Hey Temper, I agree and I do appreciate the fact that KGON is smart enough to have Live personalities on during the week, but I still think they could do a better job with the music. MOre variety, deeper cuts ect.

Ya, I agree with the deeper cuts as an addition to their current playlist, but they still do an awesome job and also have great contests & giveaways! I especially love the noon hour connect the classics that Iris does. You can sometimes get great deep digs aired if you can get through on the phone lines, and you don't dig to deep! I'm guilty of that but like i've always been told: "If You Don't Ask Then The Answer Is Always NO"! Also love the five o'clock funny. Helps to take the edge off while sitting in the freeway parking lot waiting to get my car out!
