It looks like Al Gore is going to have to update his slide show -- his projections were waaayyyy off base.

Greenland ice melt shocks scientists
Rising sea level - Climate models failed to foresee the acceleration, and the far-reaching effects are likely to bring more Northwest rain

Sunday, September 09, 2007
MICHAEL MILSTEIN
The Oregonian Staff

KANGERLUSSUAQ, Greenland -- The vast ice sheet that coats Greenland up to 2 miles thick is reacting to global warming far faster than scientists thought it would.

It makes some of them wonder whether they've underestimated the speed of changes a warmer climate brings. . . .

It is the acceleration that stuns scientists. Greenland's glaciers are adding up to 58 trillion gallons of water a year to the oceans, more than twice as much as a decade ago and enough to supply more than 250 cities the size of Los Angeles, NASA research shows.

That's particularly unsettling because elaborate climate models that scientists use to estimate the effects of global warming did not foresee it. Scientists themselves never imagined Greenland's ice, which holds enough water to raise sea levels 23 feet and sits in position to influence Northwest weather, would move so quickly. . . ."

Here we go again! Watch, in a few days, U.S. government paid scientists will refute the data saying it was not read correctly and IT'S JUST NOT SO! End of story. Coverage will subside and fade away. Life will go on as usual.

So "Skep" let's get on a subject posters care about:

If Skeptical starts one of these threads, I can assume it's simply an anti-Bush tirade and there really isn't a problem to be concerned with, especially when he puts it in bold.

Rest well friends, global warming apparently isn't a problem after all.

See? Gore was wrong again. I should never have listened to him and his ridiculously modest predictions about global warming...

Agreed we need to start yesterday on clean-up but just remember this ol' planet can and will sometimes take care of things herself. With the rise in frequency and strength of hurricanes, tornadoes, drought, flooding, and rising water levels, we may be dooming ourselves in the distant future to go the way of the dinosaurs. I don't believe there will be overnight changes but if things keep going the same way one day the only animal life left on earth will be the insects!

It's not "the planet" I'm worried about, it's the human race. The planet will be fine even if our race dies off.

The problem with the rapid Greenland ice meltoff is that were going to see rather immediate problems with the sea level rising. We'll have to just throw in the towel on New Orleans in our lifetime and our coast line will be subjected to major relocation (people and land) starting as early as the next decade. Then, there's the rest of the world.

..We'll have to just throw in the towel on New Orleans

They shouldn't have built it BELOW sea level to begin with!

Floods, floods, floods and expect the taxpayer to bail them out (no pun intended....well maybe a little) over and over again.

It’s not just New Orleans, which is a cool city by the way with the exception of Bourbon Street. It's the only place I've ever been where they have to hose the puke off the sidewalks every morning. 6 blocks of drunks, fags, hookers and crooks.

In St. Louis, there is an area where the Missouri and Mississippi rivers come together. It floods there quite often and the people rebuild in the same spot on the tax payers nickel. Floods again and rebuild.

If tax payers have to pay for it, the payment should come with the stipulation that it will only be once at that location. Then you are on your own. Same crap on the seashores. Hurricanes destroy it over and over and WE (all of us) pay to rebuild it.

Once is enough.

It's just fun to blame everything on the Teflon® President (aka Slick Willie) whether it's really his fault or not.

It’s kind of like people watching at the Saturday Market. You never know what you'll see or what reaction you can get.

Plus it’s fun to aggravate the Lefties!

I LOVE making fun of some of their (Dems) programs. But when the neo-CONs specially (the gay) Larry Craig railed Clinton when the sperm on the dress incident happened I get a little bit mad. They do the same crap and they think their all high and mighty....

seriously now . . .

skybill sez: "They shouldn't have built it BELOW sea level to begin with!"

Exactly! Even before this polar bear demise announcement, I said that not one dime of taxpayer money should be going to N.O. We need to relocate residents and cut our losses. The fact that N.O. residents voted down shoring up their own levees only months before Katrina UNDERLINES the need to do this.

Lets put science to work here and save the federal gov't a bundle.

"Amsterdam is below sea level and they rebuilt."

I think its safe to say that if you own land . . . , ahem, the former seabed, in Amsterdam, right now would be a good to put it on the market.
