Back when I used to drink milkshakes, my favorite spot was the Humdinger near Cornell and Murray Blvd. I fancied their Root Beer milkshake. Nowadays I make my own non-dairy smoothies using organic Root Beer from Santa Cruz. Gotta say I actually make the best milkshake substitutes in town.

I nominate two places(but they're not in PDX proper): Alf's in McMinnville (nicknamed in our family "The Monkey Place" beacause they have a pet monkey at the diner) and a little place in Lincoln City called "The 60's Cafe" in the corner of a strip mall across from the entrance to Chinook Winds. When I take the niece and nephew hiking at either Cascade Head or Drift Creek Falls, we always stop in Lincoln City for a milkshake.

The shakes at the old Waddles used to be pretty darn good. They'd put it in a glass and also give you the rest that did not fit in the big tall silver shake mixer. But....from days long gone I think there used to be a Tastee Freeze in North Portland that was pretty darn good! I think that was the name, thought is was over on union around Lombard. Edit Add: Agree that Burgerville does make an awesome shake it's just to bad the the food is the same temp these days and the bacon is still moving! And call me weird but there is just something good about a large Wendys frosty! Oh....and "Dairy Queen" needs to change their name to "Stable Boy"! P UKE with a capital UKE!

Oh man... I think the last time I had one of those, it was almost a year ago from the Carl's Jr. on Lancaster Dr. in Salem (!) - which is strange since I don't live down there. But I agree, they're good. Remember that "Burgerville" topic on the other side where I posted my list of good, mixed, and bad locations? Family and I went to the 26th and Powell location, one of us ordered a milkshake, thinking he'd get one like we'd remembered - made with ice cream. Instead, he got a cup that looked like it was filled whipping cream and flavoring. He took it back and demanded his money back. That's enough for me to never order a milkshake from Burgerville again.

Just had chocolate shake from the Arctic Circle (AC/Greasy) in Mac yesterday. Very thick and ice creamy--but way too sweet. On a scale of 1 to 10--I give it a 6.8.

Best shakes in my opinion in the metro? Steakburger, right off Hwy 99 in Hazel Dell up in the 'couv. I may be biased because of the mini golf, but their shakes were what I remembered them to be as a kid. Plus its family run... I get there whenever I can.

Skyline Drive-in Mark Lindsay's Rock & Roll Cafe - you get the metal cup. This was the only thing on our order that they didn't screw up, but our waitress was fantastic. They also have a soda fountain area where you can sit at the counter just for ice cream stuff.
