I noticed on my way home last night and again this morning that the HD side of 1190 KEX seems to have some audio issues... Whenever there are loud noises (especially with female voices) it sounds like there is a clipping issue, causing some nasty distortion.

I tried to listen last night, but the distortion was too much and I had to flip the dial... same thing this morning...

There isn't even a walkman type HD radio, out in the market yet.

Nice add-on unit that you can use in-home as well.

there isn't a portable HD radio because the electrical demands are too great hopefully Ibiquity should be working on low power chip sets soon if not work is currently being done on this problem. I tried running the Radioshack HD receiver on 8 AA size cells and guess what the clock worked and it looked like the receiver was going to work but when I hit the power switch the radio shut down but it works perfectly with the included power supply.

Now THAT'S not good battery milage if I may say so!

I had a CD player some years ago that ran on two AA's. Needless to say it would go silent after only four hours of listening.

The designs have improved considerably over the years but as far as I am concerned, AC adapters are any electronic user's best friend...........

KD7, did you try two 6-volt lantern batteries wired together in series? Or even a small car battery? Wouldn't be [easily] portable (car batteries tend to be heavy) but a decent substitute for example, if you are somewhere where there is no access to AC power, like the beach or outside.

Just a thought........

I used regular AA sized cells in a battery case from a telescope. Yes car batteries when coupled with a good DC/AC inverter can be a good substitute for AC power especially where I am there are many trees around and in many cases they are blown into power lines if the winds get above 40 MPH even then the power is not back on for anywhere between a few hours or in the case of the windstorm last December a few days.

Now, you mentioned a Radio Shack IBAC rig. (Try reading that line out loud. It rhymes....) I assume it is an Accurian, is it?

Does it use an AC adaptor transformer, or does it have merely a power cord that plugs into the back (i.e. AC adaptor transformer is built-in to the radio, like many boomboxes have)?

Curious.......

If it uses an external transformer, you might also be able to plugh it in to the cigarette lighter in the car, bike, whatever you drive. Then, if your car radio has an auxillary input (like my Kenwood does) you can connect the line-out of the IBAC into your car radio.

'Twould make a decent substitute for an "*ahem*HD-ready"*coughHACKcough* car rig and having to shell out even more money for a seperate box to receive the digital stations. Also kinda similar in concept to what I do with my SCA rigs, just a different format.........

the radio uses a separate adapter transformer yes it is an Accurian and for that I would have to see what kind of voltage the radio takes because the last thing I want to do is release the "magic smoke"

The Internet decided to eat my previous post, but I just wanted to say "Thank You" to whoever fixed the HD audio on KEX!

Look on the Accurian's power supplies label!
12 Volts (DC) @ 5 amps.
Those puny little AA's won't do. Get some lithium D batteries.

that could work or perhaps a car battery might be better I am lucky that a fire was not started because of my little experiment.

It's no one's fault that L-Band is tied up by the military. They had to punt.

Chris, if you can hear me, KEX HD is much louder than before and sounds distorted. I can't really say it sounds better than the analog signal at this point because of the distortion that I don't really hear in analog. It sounds different but not really better. Before several days ago, they sounded really good!

Semoochie,
Which HD radio did you get for your car?

It's a JVC. I'm not sure of the model number and if I go out to the car, the dog will start barking, wake up my wife and I'll just end up trying to give the dog away on pdxradio again! :-) Does HDR1 sound familiar?

Semoochie,
Yes, that is close enough. I know you mentioned it a long time ago but I forgot. I was just wondering. Don't need the dog barking.

The JVC radio is the KD-HDR1. I have the empty box right in front of me right now.

I pulled it back again. We just removed a processor that we were beta testing, and I'm trying to get the 'old' processor dialed back in.
