Why is it that KDUK's music always seems like it is pitched too fast or sped up?

KDUK has been pitching up their music (+2%) since 2004. Many CHR stations (programmed by morons) do this to give their station a "younger" sound, while providing more commercial time. Z100 has been pitching up their music +3%, which makes the station sound like chipmunk radio! This is why I can barely stand listening to Z100. KDUK sounds bad enough at +2%.

It just doesn't sound good. T Pain's "Bartender" is really hard to listen to on KDUK.

I don't know bout dat. But I heard "U and dat" by E-40 with T- Pain on the Duck today and the way the song was sped up it sounded like E-40 had one too many 40's to drink.

No kidding! 101.5 KFLY, 104.7 KDUK and 105-5 Bob FM are the only Eugene stations with the chipmunk factor. As far as I know, 105-5 Bob FM is the only Adult Hits station in the world with pitched up music. (I'm surprised that a McKenzie River Broadcasting station would do something like this.) New Country KKNU stopped pitching up their music, several years ago.

Any chance in our lifetime that KDUK and the rest of the ex CC Eugene stations will stop over pitching the music? Maybe the jocks should also be pitched up to compliment the pitched up music...that way you get the full appreciation of the chipmunk sound.

There's a couple of reasons for pitching up the music. First, it makes the station sound more upbeat. Secondly, it makes the competition sound slow and dreary in comparison. Top 40 stations have been pitching up their music for years! I worked for a station back in 1988 that did it. It's a psycological thing to get young listeners to stick with the more upbeat sounding station and not move to "slower" CHR/Hot AC across town.

What do you do when the station across town pitches too? Notch it up more?

I used to pitch Energy. Then I realized the music is already fast. Now when I hear dance music pitched I just laugh. There's a reason a song was produced at a given bpm. I'm used to hearing songs at the proper speed so any station that pitches sounds out of place.

Right on, Edger! The real PD's in this business, won't pitch up the music. Today, most people own a personal music player full of their favorite songs, and they'll know when the pitch has been altered, when they hear these songs on the radio.

I realized this while listening to WKTU's web stream several years ago - the pitching up sounded ridiculous, especially on stuff like "Mars - Pump Up the Volume" that everyone's heard before.

The thing that I don't understand is when the ballad version of dance songs makes the playlist cut on CHR stations, and sounds as pitched up as the real version. DHT's "Listen to Your Heart" cover and the Cascada song come to mind here.
