Since the talk about ARB's Personal People Meter often gets stuck into the middle of threads like the current KOOL one, I thought I'd give it a home of its own.

Arbitron announced yesterday, after serious outcry from Phili and Houston, that they will offer sample size guarantees -- and start refunding money to subscribing stations if they miss those targets.

[A lot of people in the sample have stopped carrying their meters, which eliminates them from a given day's or week's data sample. But they were remaining in the designated sample, so ARB wasn't replacing them.]

A note to my radio pals with bonus structures in their employment agreements: Once the PPM comes to Portland, you and your legal eagles may want to devise a plan which allows you to receive that ARB refund for surveys where ARB misses their sample size and you miss your bonus. And because this shortfall has been particularly severe in the young and the ethnic (new fox series) -- those employed at Z and Jammin' may want to pay particular attention to their next round of contract negotiations.

The PPM will become the only source of ratings in the Seattle market in June 2009. It will become the only source of ratings in Portland in December 2009.

This would impact anyone signing an agreement of at least 2 years length right now.

On the "plus" side, there may not be any local DJs under contract two years from now, making this whole topic moot.

One of the things that has become apparent to me as we look to switching to PPM up here (Seattle) in '09 is that we're no longer measuring "listening", but rather, "exposure". Suddenly getting your station played in high-traffic locations becomes a HUGE way of increasing your cume. To me, KXL should be making a deal RIGHT NOW to be on the air in the Rode Garden concourse and outdoor perimeter whenever there is an event going on.

Also, based on PPM data in Houston and Philly AC stations see the largest huge cume increases, to the tune of 39% cume share for KODA.

From a story in Radio World about the PPM system, http://www.rwonline.com/pages/s.0052/t.568.html, stations get an encoder for EVERY stream, AM/FM analog, AM HD, FM HDn+, and internet streams.

Exposure indeed!

"so what station gets the best ratings in salem?"

A Portland radio station! ("rimshot") :-)

Seriously, I'm not sure...my best guess would be KYKN News/Talk 1430(Limbaugh, Seahawks, Blazers). Also to be considered could be KWIP 880(If you count Dallas) or La Pantera 940(If you count Woodburn), due to the large Spanish speaking population.

Not being in Salem, I'm not sure how strong or listenable the PDX AM stations are. I do know that at my location here in the western panhandle of Yamhill County, KYKN 1430 is much more listenable at night than any of the PDX AMs, due to the intermittent nasty phase distortion/sky wave cancellation of Portland AMs here.(And also due to the fact that KYKN beams most of its nighttime power nearly due west.)

I wasn't sure how well KXL and KEX are received in the Salem area at night. Just thought KYKN had a stronger signal in Salem than KXL and KEX.

I guess the question to truly ask is do radio listeners outside of PDX proper(but inside the Portland Statistical Area) listen to any local radio at all?(What precious little there is left...)

BTW, what is KBZY playing these days? Since they had to move their transmitter, I have not been able to hear them.

50s 60s 70s and once in awhile one of the bosses favorites 80s...local local local...

The reason I ask about Salem listening is because I have hardly ever heard a national talk show host say now a caller from Salem, when the only way they could hear the talk show was live from a PDX outlet, my favorite was LAURA I a caller from Salem listening on KUIK, tons of OREILLY listeners from Salem...listening live of course to KXL...so many signals, such a waste...

I enjoy catching the very early broadcast feed of Laura Ingraham on 1430 KYKN. It's on an hour or two before 910 AM carries it. Salem's 1490 KBZY-AM shares a great playlist a la KLYC and 1220's morning show is a real treat.
