Ok, I moved it from the other topic.
First of all , what is a land mine? do IED's count as land mines? Technically their already a violation of the geneva convention.

And the proposed ban in land mines only covers anti personel land mines, not anti armor land mines.

Land mines can have 2 purposes. One is to protect a fixed defensive position, and have to be used as one component of overall defense. Anyone with decent training can get through a mine field, if someone isnt shooting at you.

The other types are used to deny an area to an opposition, or slow down a moving force. These are the types that are causing the most harm. Mainly because people dont write down exactly where they are.

A third use, is as a terror weapon, mines sporadically spread in an area used mainly by civilian forces, as far as I know the US has never done that. Although the ones we dropped on the Ho chi Minh trail, could be interpreted that way, but their primariy use, was to slow down the delivery of military supplies.

Maybe this is a better topic for your "Soldier of Fortune" group's forum.

The mines we dropped on the Ho Chi Minh trail were more for stopping commerce moving up and down the trail, yes. Not to take out people.

The fragmentation mines and other devices the VC used against us were much more effective both physically and psychologically, because they did not target any large machinery per se, but the troops. Step on a trip wire here, and the guy 100 yards to your left takes it. A frag mine that spreads out nails or other shrapnel, taking out multiple victims. You never knew where, when or how they were or how they would go off ... all you can really do is tread lightly and pray.

Again, how is a worldwide ban on land mines going to be effective against guerrilla tactics like this?

I like the weapons that are weird. Like, I read about a beam of light/energy/something - that when it hits the target, it makes a person ( the target ) FEEL like they are on fire. But they are not.

That seems like a good one.

No. This is one that has no side effects or physical damage after it's turned off.

I read about that one. It's a particular frequency that excites the nerves. Supposedly, there are no longer term effects.

(probably there are, but maybe it's not worse than getting shot!)

If a terrorist is coming towards me, or an enemy soldier, I want him/her dead, not to feel bad, not incapicated, dead!

"If a terrorist is coming towards me..."

What are the odds of having that happen? But then again, consider the source and what he considers a "terrorist". Somebody who uses biodiesel? Rides a bike? Miss Teen South Carolina?

I wish Bessie would document her landmines. I really hate walking up to the well house and stepping on a squishy!
