I believe Herb does drive an SUV. I remember a back when I did a thread on BIG ASS SUV's, I asked Herb if he drove an SUV. He never answered my question. I think that says a lot.

Indeed, I am a proponent of larger vehicles.

If you've ever been in a serious, life-threatening collision, you'd agree.

And when it comes to engines, my advice is to get the biggest V-8 possible. If they made a V-10 or V-12 for the general population, I'd drive it.

The pro-life bumper stickers are not for my safety, but for the safety of little pre-born kids.

Hummers are fine.

They're simply not my style.

However, if I could get one with a 'Nixon Now' bumper sticker on it, I may re-consider.

You know what would go great with that classic Nixon bumper sticker? Che Guevara's hair!

"MIAMI -- A former CIA operative and Cuban exile plans to auction what he says is a lock of Che Guevara's hair, snipped before the Argentinian revolutionary and friend of Fidel Castro was buried in 1967.

Gustavo Villoldo, 71, was involved in Guevara's capture in the jungles of Bolivia, according to unclassified U.S. records and other documents. He plans to auction the hair and other items kept in a scrapbook since the joint CIA-Bolivian army mission 40 years ago.

"It's time for me to put the past behind and pass these on to someone else," said Villoldo, also a veteran of the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba."

You could hang it from the mirror along with a dreamcatcher, fuzzy dice, a tree air freshener and a garter.

Nice, Edselehr.

And Littlesongs, while Mr. Guevara is history:

I'd gladly settle for a free Cuba, complete with the newspaper headline heralding Fidel's flight to North Korea to save his sorry black-hearted and dastardly, commie behind.

I'll take a High Performance small block V-8 over a big-block any day! I love the 327 in my 05 GMC Envoy Denali! It gets up and goes. Only 2WD so the front end does not rob power either. The AWD models rob (divide) the HP and are slower to respond. Also get less MPG than the 2WD models.

If I were to name a terrific looking car that isn't that big, I'd say either a '70's Corvette or a Chevy Nova. Decent power, and simply beautiful cars.

You know I have never been "into" cars. I view them as simply a means to get me to point B. Thus my list of vehicles over the years certainly didn't impress the ladies or draw crowd of dudes to gather around my machine to open up the hood and look at the engine.

I had different ways to waste my money.

The last 1969 Boss 429 I saw in auction went for around $250,000! That car was beautiful!

This one is very very similar to my first car, I had her in High School and sure do miss her!

My.

Rather ham-fisted aren't we, Mrs. Merkin.

You can drive in a Yugo if you want.

But make my car one that's made with American labour and with enough power to get the job done.

American "Labour"? There's an oxymoron.

You still haven't answered the question of what you drive, but I know it's a sensible 4-door SEDAN.

I drive an SUV or a Chevy pickup with a big ass sticker that says: Don't like Abortion? Don't have one.

Let's just say that the vehicles I own are American made.

When it comes to American Labour, I put my money where my mouth is...unlike so-called union leaders, republicans, democrats and slick politicos who sold out the American worker with NAFTA, GATT and the WTO.

And one of my bumper stickers says "Choose Life." Another says "Abortion Is Mean."

Today’s American made large vehicles are a step backwards towards any kind of fuel efficiency. When Europe went with hybrids back circa 2001, it was at that time the Hummer came into the US market.

It is true a larger vehicle may save your life in a serious crash, however because of technology today lighter weight materials that are just as strong as steel while allowing better fuel mileage are pretty much everywhere expect the US.

The airline industry has already gone in this direction and it's saving fuel big time.

However it's still about choice, and American auto dealers are getting they cans kicked by some pretty impressive imports that are made better, get higher fuel mileage and are safer.

To be honest we currently drive a Dodge Mini Van that we bought new 11 plus years ago. I did loads of research before we made the purchase and it has done a great job for us. Also keep in mind we are a one car family by choice so I needed something dependable for the long haul.

However the market and auto making has changed in those years since we bought the van and in the next year or two we'll probably purchase some kind of eco-friendly hybrid. Will it be American built or foreign?...I don't know but I will again do my research to find what will work best for us.

I am disappointed that American automakers didn't take the lead in some of the new technololgy. Some are embracing it now because they have too others are doing it to stay in the game. If the foreign builts push our automakers into making quality, safe and fuel efficient cars, trucks, SUVs then I'm all for it.

I said cars, not trucks. However, I think that American made trucks are an endangered species, because as gas gets more expensive, they will fall out of favor. Plus, both Nissan and Toyota have very nice trucks, but the larger part of the truck culture still doesn't accept them. But, their market share is growing, which means the American share is dropping.

Deane, I try to buy American made products, but I'm sorry, American made cars are simply inferior both in design and performance on the broader scale. Everytime I travel and rent a car, I can't stand to drive it, as it's an American made piece of junk. The Germans, Japanese, and Koreans are building better cars, period.

Chris, take a look at Toyota, they are the leader in hybrids. The Toyota Highlander comes in a hybrid addition, and is kind of a SUV/minivan crossover, and would be perfect for the family. Try to buy one that's one or two years old to get the best price.

Vita and DT good points all the way around. The hybrid technology is improving with each year that is why I'm not in a huge hurry.

DT, I will take a battery pack over gas consumption in a heartbeat. However it also gets down to lifestyle choices too. American's could have so many other choices as far as vehicles are concerned if big oil, steel and coal companies didn't throw around their power and money. Having been to Europe twice in the past 2 years allows me to view things from that a different perspective.

We do build some quality automobiles here in the states but sadly we still choose to waste energy while making energy suck vehicles. Again-It's our lifestyle choice. If you smoke cigs you know the risks. If you drive large vehicles that suck gas and pollute, you need to know the risks.

The whole energy grid in America is based on 100 year old technology but we have the means to correct it now just like making good automobiles.

I highly recommend the new book by Ron Pernick and Clint Wilder called "The Clean Tech Revolution-The Next Big Growth and Investment Opportunity" Ron was at Powell's Books over the summer and we enjoyed hearing him talk about this new book. There was a guy in the audience who spent 30 years working for PGE and he tipped his hat to Ron and Clint's work as visionary.

I'm just trying to educate myself.

That used up battery pack is more of an environmental burden to dispose of the the same emissions from a dinosaur burner. And because of the cost of it that makes the cars active lifespan much much shorter. Who is gonna spend 3 grand on a car only worth 1500 dollars? Those things will be in wrecking yards within 10 to 12 years tops.

DT-Again the technology is changing and that very issue is being addressed. Remember the safety standards of cars back in the 50s and 60s and even into the 70s. Lousy. Eventually common sense and safety was put into car building. Don't throw out all the technology yet. In time your used cars will be hybrids and your new cars will be...who knows, but far better than today.

Of course there's that old technology called walking. Thankfully we do loads of it in our family. It's a small thing. And somedays the van never leaves the driveway. I love those days.

That Nickel mine in Canada is under a lot of scrutiny for the toxic elements involved and those batteries require that element. When depleted the current batteries are more toxic than gas emissions would have been. YES by all means improve the batteries and make them less toxic to the environment but we are not there yet so until then my gas-o-saurus is every bit as environmentally friendly as any Prius out there!

It's not just gas for me its also maintenance, insurance and the all around nuisance a vehicle can be. If I could go van-less I would in an instant. Actually the wife and I are kind of working towards that in our lives.

Another part of the equation for me is this need for consumption in America. I realize a capitalist society needs consumers to consume but my god we are obese when it comes to over consumption in all areas especially when it comes to cars.

DT let me ask a somewhat unfair question to you. And you have the right not to answer. If you could live without a car/van or truck would you or could you?

If I lived in an area with regular mass-transit and sidewalks, I would ditch my car in a heartbeat. I truly dislike driving.

If mass transit is available, I usually try to make it to the nearest transit centre, and ride the SkyTrain, MAX, TTC Subway/bus, or whatever the city I'm visiting has.
