Venue for OPB event criticized Ira Glass is coming. Whether there's a huge turnout for the voice of "This American Life" on Oct. 7 is -- well, given this is Portland -- being debated. Glass' $28-a-ticket speaking engagement, sponsored by Oregon Public Broadcasting, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at New Hope Community Church in Clackamas, which has been prominent in anti-gay campaigns. Advertisement The association of Glass and New Hope is a sore point with some Portland bloggers and others, who are grumbling about the venue choice. However, it appears Oregon Public Broadcasting is sticking with the site. Tom Doggett, vice president for OPB television programming, confirmed Wednesday evening that Glass still is scheduled to speak at New Hope. Doggett cited Oregon Public Broadcasting's September Member Guide, which was mailed last week. For tickets, go to www.opb.org. "So, if it's still up on the Web site," Doggett said, "I suppose that we're still expecting that he's coming." Curiously, the Web site doesn't specify where he is appearing. -- Wade Nkrumah

OPB has always been a tad left. Maybe they're turning over a new leaf and less hostile to conservatives. Herb

Yes, you might say they are trying to get into bed with the conservatives, who I doubt would want to turn their backs to them while they are under the covers.

Who's the hostile one here? Just as you have a right to boycott, for now, Americans have the freedom to assemble. And given the overwhelming passage of Defense of Marriage laws throughout the nation, the left is solidly in the minority on this one. Herb

Doubly interesting ... because Ira Glass himself is out of the closet. I guess "hate the sin, not the sinner" goes both ways.

"God, who truly does accept everyone for what they are." Wait a minute. God accepts everyone for what they are? What does that even mean? And from whence comes such an opinion? Let's set Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot aside for the moment and start with someone like an adulterer, or a bank robber, or someone who lies, or perhaps cheats on their taxes, or steals a few pens from their employer. How does that relate to God's acceptance? God accepts everyone, right? Or are there conditions? If so, what are they and where do they come from? Or does anything go? Herb

"The evidence is in the audience." Oh, you mean the vast majority of Bible-believing audiences who give to charitable causes like their house of worship, which feed the poor, provide clothes to widows and orphans, support the blind and build wells...all for people that they will never meet in their lifetimes? Design proves a designer. To say the marvels of this earth and solar system 'just happened' and by chance, no less, is to place FAR more faith in the THEORY of evolution than anyone who believes in a Creator. This once again illustrates the pretzel-like gymnastics the left will go to in order to deny a Creator. In their scheme, as long as God is out of the picture, puny man can attempt to make himself God. Herb

I see it this way. There might be a god, might not, might be more than one, etc... Any creator, unwilling to accept it's own creation is not worthy period, end of story. On this question then, existence is moot. Does not matter. If there is a god, then we are accepted. If not, then no worries!

God is like a commanding general, if your a private, you may never see him. But you feel his presence. He hands down certain rules he expects you to folow. If you follow them, your life goes on as normal, if you dont follow them, you can expect serious reprecusions.

LOL. Good one, Nwokie. But hey, if that's what works for you, that's great. You can at least understand why many people of your own faith do not see it that way, right?

Herb, God created Hilter, etc. The trick comes that to get his full acceptance you must first accept him. If Hitler accepted God just before he died, then he is in Heaven. If a gay accepts God, God accepts him. It is as simple as that.

But back to boycotting OPB. No. I see New Hope Church as making a compromise in this situation. Same with OPB. They met in the middle. It's fair. ( That is, assuming there was even any discussion on this kind of level ).

Of course, it could be that the whole point of it is lost on everyone. Mind you, this is straight from the department of speculation, but have you really just taken a deep breath and thought about it? Ira Glass is brilliant. This American Life paints the greatest candid portraits of America on the radio since Will Rogers. The show is rooted in the idea of exposing us to one another in totally different ways. So, are the gears turning yet? If this was part of the plan, giving a group of folks who would never set foot in that church an evening in the sanctuary is a stroke of genius. It gives people a rare glimpse into the inner sanctum of a leviathan facility dedicated to pseudo spirituality. What is wrong with bringing some rare truth to that pulpit? Just a thought...

I have a simple idea in my simple mind. If you want love You've got to give a little If you want faith You just believe a little If you want peace Turn your cheek a little You've got to give You've got to give to live An empty hand reaching out for someone An empty heart takes so little to fill It's so much easier to push instead of pull Don't give up Each man's a country in his own right Oh ev'rybody needs a friend One friend one God one country I believe in faith and destination But so much of that lies in our own hands

"Design proves a designer." That's open to interpretation. I'm not necesarily denying a creator, but I'm certainly not naive enough to believe you or any other person on earth is even remotely close in YOUR interpretation. Your twisted brand of faith does not have the patent on absolute truth, as does anyone elses.

The venue is in the midst of being changed. As to you Herb, wasn't the defense of marriage act one of the things that Senator Larry Craig was behind, or in front of, I'm really not sure what Senator Craig's position is on this subject, for all I know he's just stalling on the subject.
