Anyone else in pdxradio land in a league? My draft is tonight, where I plan to make up for my poor showing last season!

I play year round (baseball, basketball, football) and have done so for about 10 years. I'm in a league with the same players every year. I had the third pick and ended up with Shaun Alexander, after LT and Stephen Davis were taken.

I have the 6th pick this year:-( smack dab in the middle of out 12 man league. Football is the one I do each year with the same group, I've been doing basketball on my own, as most of my friends only like football and baseball. I got burnt out on baseball, way to much work during the season, football is the best, each game really means something during a 16 game season!

The part I hate about football is getting bad matchups. I usually end up with the second most points scored for the week, yet end up with a loss.

The guy in our league got a gift at number 6. Our draft went:

LT
Stephen Davis
Shaun Alexander
Frank Gore
Rudi Johnson
Larry Johnson

When number 5 said Rudi Johnson, the guy in number 6 said, "was that Rudi you just said?" with a big smile on his face. Keep in mind, LJ hadn't signed yet...but he was a steal at number 6, because had he been signed at the time, he might have gone at 3 or 4.

I am in all the fantasy leagues with the same group of guys I have been pal-ing around with, talking sports on IRC YEARS ago ... we all have our own big message board and we do all the leagues together.

I am the commissioner of the football league. I run it as a keeper league, we get to keep three players off of our roster each. Makes it more interesting ...

Mine were: Shaun Alexander, Maurice Jones-Drew (whom I drafted in the LAST round last year, a total coup on my part) and TJ Houshmandzadeh.

One guy has LT, Larry Johnson and Carson Palmer as his keepers, and he has yet to win the damn league. Go figure.

I like the keeper league idea a lot, for some reason the guys in my league are not so into it. I picked up M.J.D this year in the second round. Even though I drafted 6th this year, I feel pretty good about my team, it's much more balanced this year than in previous years, maybe because I was sober when making my picks? I think the guy who took Joey Harrington in the second round had had a few too many at that point.

Friends don't let friends drink and draft!

Pdxdc - good job with your running backs, that's the bread and butter of a fantasy league. Heck I almost won the league last year despite Shaun Alexander missing half the season and ineffective when he WAS in ... Maurice Jones-Drew kept me in it.

Quarterback play is the most overrated aspect of a fantasy league IMO. Just don't get a guy who makes mistakes and you're set. Yeah Peyton Manning is the obvious exception, but there's only one of him. Heck I rolled with Jon Kitna last year ...

ok, I set up the league. I picked 'autodraft' there weren't any good times left for a live draft. If you want, after registering your team, you can pre rank your players. I'll initiate the autopick 2 days before the season starts (next Thursday)

go here to register: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/
choose "join league" (on the right hand side, the only in blue/green)

It would be best if we could have an even number of teams. If we have an odd number, each week, one of us will have a bye week (we are in a head to head league) If any of you know anyone who might want to join, please let them know about the league.

Cheaters will be punished! no making a new team, and trading all the best players to one of your teams! The monkey of pain and misery shall visit your home if you plan to tamper with the natural order of things!!!

You would be surprised at how fun it is, even when you feel that you don't know much about football. I never really watched it until about 6 years ago, when I started to do the fantasy football thing. You can just let the system make your picks for you, and I'm sure any of us who follow football closer would be more than willing help out. I hadn't noticed this before, but for a league to be able to start it's draft, and begin the season, it has to have an even number of teams, I has assumed the whole bye week thing if our league were to be an odd number of teams. as of right now, we need one more team to get to an even number. Maybe I can get my cat to make a team.

Let's get at least one more in there. Heck with six teams, the rosters are going to be so stacked that it'll be ultra-competitive. We won't have the slacker who doesn't know squat with a bunch of has-beens and never-will-bes for a roster.

"...slacker who doesn't know squat with a bunch of has-beens and never-will-bes for a roster."

That does it. I'm switching my list of choices to "private" ASAP.

I picked all my players on only one criteria: Looks. How their butt and thighs look in their tight pants, hotness, a few extra points if they have braids, and how they clean up in a suit.

As far as my living room decor, let's call it "eclectic", nothing clashes, because nothing matches. I'm putting it next to my spendy "Wally"* pottery from "Twist".

Six seems like a good number of teams. Like Brian said, the teams will be stacked, which could help those who might not follow football all that closely to have good teams. If everyone who's in the league is ok with it, how about I move the draft to tonight? I'll wait until everyon has had a chance to let me know that they are ready. Can everyone in out league check to see if at the right hand side of the front page, there is a button that says change draft status to ready? if so, click that button, that way, once everyone is ready, the draft will automatically begin.

I'm going to post this message on our league page.

LMAO! This is gorgeous! Smack indeed!

The Portland Storm are gonna own you!

"The Portland Storm were an American football team based out of Portland, Oregon, playing in the World Football League. When the World Football League was created in October 1973, the Storm was the original New York franchise. When the Boston Bulls merged with New York to become the New York Stars, the original New York entry's draft picks were eventually relegated to Portland.

Portland's original owner, a Houston accountant named John Rooney, soon dropped out of the picture. By March 1974, Bruce Gelker, a former football player and owner of several Saddleback Inns, was named the new owner of the fledgling Portland Storm. The Storm hired Ron Mix, an All-time AFL player, as General Manager and Dick Coury, an NFL assistant with the Denver Broncos, as head coach.

The Storm had mostly rookies and rejects in its roster. Among the standouts was running back Rufus "Roadrunner" Ferguson, ex-CFL and Detroit Lion quarterback Greg Barton, and linebackers Marty Schottenheimer, who would be a successful head coach in the NFL and Bruce Bergey, brother of Cincinnati Bengals-Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey.

In the first half, Portland played poorly, going 1-8-1 in the process. The Storm didn't win its first game until they beat Detroit in the ninth week. Originally a Wheels home game, the contest was moved to London, Ontario. The team improved during the second half of the season, thanks in part to many NFL players cut in training camp that September. Among the new signings were "Big" Ben Davidson of the Oakland Raiders, and Pete Beathard, who had been cut by the Kansas City Chiefs. With the stock of veterans, the Storm improved to 6-4. Finishing overall tied with Houston-Shreveport at 7-12-1. Soon after, the IRS impounded the franchise and Portland wouldn't get another team until the 1975 Portland Thunder took its place in 1975 and lasted until the entire WFL folded halfway through its second season.

Their home stadium for both the Portland Storm and Thunder was Civic Stadium now renamed PGE Park."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Storm

Unfortunately, the real Storm did not have a glorious history or storybook ending. They were barely the Portland Mavericks of the gridiron. I still have a tee-shirt from that inaugural season. Curious about the short-lived World Football League? This site is fairly comprehensive:

http://wflfootball.tripod.com/index.html

The Portland Storm has been my traditional fantasy football team name over the last six or seven years. This season, like some June days, I have two Storms. Put that umbrella away -- you tourist! :o)

The Storm is going down (again?) in week 2!

Seriously, this is so much fun! I've never cared about, or been interested in football in my entire life, and Mr. M is doing a tiny bit of La-Z-Boy QB'n for me, so we're both having fun, he's even had one of his buddies who is a HUGE FF player to check out my roster.

For the first time ever I can't wait for football season to begin! How much beer are we in for? I think we need to add some kind of incentive besides the fabulous trophy. Trash talkers who lose could/should end up being hit in the sack, oops, I mean wallet, right?

Well, I hate to break it to you my friend, but The Fluffy Merkins have outscored everyone in the league at this very moment. Oh, her guys, Jeremy Shockey and Plaxico Burress are in that game with Terrell Owens, so this could get really ugly for the Wildcats. The topper? She still has Edgerrin James starting tomorrow night. So much for all of the man's game crap. :o)

Darktemper relaxed in his hot tub with Cabo Wabo and a victory cigar to chew. I bet he also had a perfect steak.

Marc, on the other hand, is going to have to explain to his kids where their back to school wardrobe went.

Funny how the two newbs are running 1 & 2 ain't it! Just goes to show you don't need to be smart, just lucky. And Merkin appears to be the most lucky so that must make her the least smarterest! Bahh hahahaha!

Gloating! Who, ME? Never! HaHaHa

Enjoy it while you can cause the ThunderCat's are gonna roll right over you!

Hey Brian, remember yesterday when you said that Brady only gets credit for the passing touchdown's and unless he ran in those other two himself he did not get credit for the rushing TD's? Well guess what, my man Tom ran them in all by himself! HA

Well if he ran them in himself he gets credit ... if he hands the ball off to a running back and HE scores the touchdown, the RB gets credit and not Brady.

DT's Lucky Game Day T-Shirt sez:

I'm not a gynecologist,
But I'll gladly take a look

OK, DT, bring it on, I can take it. It's only till next Tuesday, then you'll be back to coughing up big Fuzzy hairballs instead of big points.

(E_N, ask him how many trades he's made thus far! He probably doesn't even have anybody from his original team still around.)

We still have games on Sunday, plus Monday night.

The problem is, as long as Tom Brady is tearing up every record in sight, DT is the guy to beat.

I say next year (who's in for next year, anyways?!? Let's do this again!) we do a live draft, control our own teams better that way!

I'm not sure what the $10 would do ... maybe we can just all pony up for the "plus" league in Yahoo, we get stattracker with it and I believe a little trophy ... maybe all chip in for that and do the draft live on Yahoo? Or did you want to meet up somewhere and do it live that way, with lots of greasy food and livations?

Now if I can just get 40 points out of my 2 guys tonight...yeah right!

Yes, I took it hard in the merkin this week from Littlesongs, but I'm still less than 63 points away from 1st place DT. The only Cabo bottle I'll be giving you is the one you owed me...and it'll be empty so you can recycle it!

Actually, I don't follow football at all. This just sounded fun and early on I dumped players who were not scoring points for those who were. Guess I made some good trades!

If I were not a nice guy, and lacking in the experience of being married, I would have a nice comeback for your last post. So I will just say, "It's better to just run away from this one and live to fight another day!"

LOL. Funny thing, when I began my fantasy career on-line around 2002, I was pretty gung-ho. I learned as much as I could, got good enough to compete and have fun. After all, it was a great excuse to stay in touch with friends all over the place. One fellow drafted his baseball roster live in an internet cafe in Nepal.

I became skilled enough that I could easily tell when folks were cheating. Soon after that hit me, I pulled back. Competition was so dirty in basketball one season, that I locked my roster, explained the rules to the letter, won it all and gave 'em the bird. Do I still like these guys? Sure, but I saw a side that was kinda ugly.

The thing I love the most about our football league is the fun -- of course! A close second is that through all the smack and twists and turns, nobody even dreamed of getting sneaky. You have restored my real faith in folks on a virtual level and I appreciate it.

If I win it all next year, the bottle of Cabo goes to the runner up.

If only I had taken the time to study the movie league I might not be anchoring the bottom. Oh well, as they say, there's always next year.

BTW -- I aint asking for pity. I am in third place (2nd in points) in my other football league and handed #1 his cup 101.28 to 69.68 last weekend. :0)

Sorry about the utter pounding this week man! If you'd like I could sit out my QB and WR to make it less painful for ya. I'd still win of course but then it'd be only by a factor or two (60 to 30) instead of a factor of three (90 to 30). Yes indeed, the "Storm" sure lost it's "Thunder" this week for sure! The Mighty Merkin and her "Fluffer's" came out on top again but tonight will tell the tale between "PSUVikingFan" and "Brians Losers"! I'm hoping TheDudes "Vikings" can stick it to him tonight. That would put me in sole posession of first place!

HA, you funny man! Lets review the stats shall we. Right now even though we are tied for first in the number of games I am still way out front of you by 140 points and even more after tonight! Soooooooooo...I don't think so! Merkin's Fluffer's actually have more of a chance at the ring than you. Even though she is in third place, she is only 86 points behind me! So put that in your "Hooka" and smoke it!

Well, Tom Brady did not get one touchdown tonight to his credit. None of my WR's, Back's, or TE scored either. 4 points to my kicker and a huge defensive tally but I think the glue will be victorious in our matchup. Yours and Brians will see in the morning. You can manually tally this stuff which is how I do it but I will just wait till the morning as yours will likely be fairly close.

After today's round of Football Merkin was ready to toss in the towel....
She was quoted as saying:

"I'm off to shave the Merkins & give up! Thank God I benched Willie Parker-broken leg!"

But hold the phone.....

The unofficial scoring after today's Fantasy Football Finals are:

The Wildcats VS CrazyGlue

The Wildcats finished up with 76.56 points and CrazyGlue finished with 37.75 points.
The Wildcats still have to field their defense (San Diego) Monday and CrazyGlue still has to hear from LaDainian Tomlinson but it seems unlikely that he will make up that many points.

Brians Losers managed to rack up 44.33 points today but The Fluffy Merkins hit him with 66.41 points in retrun. Brians Losers still has to field Antonio Gates Tight End Monday night but I think it fair to say that the Fluffers are going to next weeks finals with the Cats!

Hold on boys and girls this one is gonna be fun!

I'm actually a little bit sad that you lost, I was actually looking forward to your insufferable gloating...and you just made it harder for me next season. This was a lot of fun, and I actually learned a lot and am now interested in Football, and I must thank my assistant coach, Mr. M. for his advice and Mr. J. for help in the draft and telling Mr. M that a lot of good players would be sitting out this week waiting for the bigger games. I just got really lucky yesterday with my strategy of playing lots of Seachickens, it could have totally backfired and the results could have been much different. We never really had a bet on a bottle of Cabo, so unless it's a "team share", it's invalid...

Thanks, guys, this was a blast! Here's to a bigger league in 2008!
