Yes, this is a bit odd. Mike Tierney hasn't even been at the station that long. Ok Insiders whats going on??? I realize Kufo's ratings have not been good lately but this is a bit strange.

Kufo has been an absolute mess for a while Now. They have LOST most of their core audience who are unhappy with the music. KUFO has been trying to get female listeners to listen, THAT IS OBVIOUS. My question is WHY????? Don't we have enough female stations in portland??? They have shot themselves in the foot by not relating to the male demo. On a side note, If they did blow Mike Tierney out of KUFO I think that was a little premature. They gave him very little time to bring the ratings up, and I think that was a bit unfair on CBS's part.
The day KUFO started playing Daltrey "its not over" I knew that station was finished!

YES Radioxpert, I am talking about Daughtry. Can you believe KUFO was actually playing his first single for a while, I can't. Playing crap like Daughtry belongs on The Buzz not KUFO! And I have to agree with Bonger, Why in the world did they have Incubus opening up for them?????? This is KUFO not the Buzz. Again, Wrong demo and KUFO has again pissed off their P1's who are no longer listening to the station. Trust me KUFO has pissed off a lot of their loyal listeners by adding artists like Incubus, Blink 182, Daughtry, Total Chick rock! While the music was going in the wrong direction, Im still amazed they fired Mike Tierney so quickly. My guess is he really F'd up on something. There is no way someone could get fired this quickly unless they REALLY messed up.

Maybe he didn't get fired. Maybe he got promoted to a new position elsewhere in the company.

I am curious about something that is related to this discussion. Why do PDs come in from other markets and immediately make significant changes to an established radio brand BEFORE they have had enough time to effectively absorb & learn this market?? That tactic almost never works. Michael Hayes @ Z100 is the most obvious example, but there have been others.

meanwhile, back at the jungle...

Starting TUESDAY, AUGUST 28th, former NFL coach JERRY GLANVILLE will join longtime radio announcer MARCONI on CBS RADIO Active Rock KUFO/PORTLAND at 3p throughout the football season. The duo promises to take listeners on a behind-the-scenes tour of the famed coach’s first year leading the PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY Vikings.

A lot of programmers feel the need to put their "stamp" on a station. So they change things just for the sake of changing things to make it their own. I'll admit it's tempting to do so, but like the old saying goes: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Football and Radio....now there's a great visual for ya! Hey....why don't ya get a Rock Star to sit in with ya....So for 4 hours a day in the afternoon you can listen to football talk between songs on a Rock station....Just doesn't quite sound like a direct hit there!

I'm sorry....but when I tune into a rock station I want music related talk and banter....not sports talk.

rant done....end of line

Really? Because when I tune in to a rock station... I want to hear ROCK MUSIC! That's KUFO's problem, IMHO.

Mike Tierney Promotion (from R&R)

After almost nine months in the PD chair at CBS Radio rocker KUFO/Portland, Ore., Mike Tierney has given birth to a new gig: He's transferring back to New York to work with PD Tracy Cloherty at the company's recently resurrected WXRK (92.3 K-Rock) as APD/MD.

"Mike and his wife are from New York," CBS/Portland GM Mark Walen tells R&R. "It's terrific for Mike, and it'll be good for our company."

Tierney, whose resume includes programming stops at KUBE and KPLZ/Seattle in the early '90s, as well as a run as VH1 VP of music programming and time at Epic and ATO Records, joined KUFO at the beginning of the year when Dave Numme transferred down to KITS (Live 105)/San Francisco.

Wow, there are some serious bitters flowing at this bar.

I like to listen to Cort & Fatboy. I only wish they had a better slot. The Raw Power Lunch can be gorgeously old school -- Minor Threat, The Mats and Husker Du on a Tuesday during a hellish part of your work day? Oh yeah! I also try to catch the new Viva La Luna because it is a fantastic idea that is blossoming into a real local tradition.

Mike left a fingerprint or two, but I do not see the negative in his brief tenure. If anything, this station is starting to find an identity, and it might start to click with a bit of tinkering. I agree with everyone who thinks the KRCK flavor could be very successful back on that spot on the dial. However, I think that the funny, the yokels show and the punk rawk ought to stay. Yes folks, that combo would sell like dollar PBRs.

Mike left before it turned into an East Coast station, so that may not have been his motivation at all. Why not wait until his former staff weighs in before you assume he sent faxes of his ass to Katie Couric? The newish overnighter is achingly gorgeous, but it seems he resisted, gathered his family and went back home to find his fortune. He got on the bus -- he was not thrown under it. Good luck Mike.

Rhetorical question: Do they have a live morning show yet?

As Tom Peterson says: Wake Up! Wake Up!

Real questions: Has anyone talked to Mike Chase or Bill Prescott lately? Could Cort and Fatboy get to bed by 7:30? :o)

Crepe Crusader, since you asked, yes and yes. No, this is not a Herb style smitten. On some levels, she reminds me of my girlfriend. Yes, Mister Flying around in Tights, to each his own. :0)

Crystal Kash is off tonight, but she is usually on this time of the morning, so why don't you check out her skills? I think she does a fine job. If I could deal with the high yarl content, I would spend more time listening to 101. There is talent, imagination and -- hopefully -- a bright future for this station.

Kufo does have potential, BUT they have their work cut out for them. HOW much longer are they going to keep Adam Corolla??? That show is so painfully bad. They need to bring in a live an local morning show.

Live and local does not mean it will be better. You have to admit the Adam Corolla show is a lot funnier and better produced than most of their current competition in this market

I've only listened to Adam Corolla a little bit, but I used to listen to him on Loveline all the time. I really like his sense of humor, so what I've heard of the show works for me.
I think their biggest problem is the talk-heavy shows in the afternoon and nights. They need to focus on music outside of mornings. I think the average 'UFO listener would rather hear music than talk in the afternoon and nights.

It just seems strange, that in a creative, unique, place like Portland, Oregon that the morning shows would be anything BUT local and really great! We should have 5 0r 6 excellent Portland based morning shows.

I wasn't in the market for a new morning show when I listened to Corolla for the first time a few months back. Now I am totally hooked and like that show on all kinds of levels. I had been a Mark and Brian listener for years. Listening to Corolla's show made me go " Oh. Wow. I didn't know just how sick I was until I got healthy again." I could never go back to listening to Mark and Brian now.

However, reading just about every post in this forum for a few years has shown me that the constant praise for Mike Chase can't be a fluke or anything but genuine.

I think I'll give his show a fair shot and see how I feel. I may as well find the best show out there for me. If I have been missing out on something special, I want to hear it. I'm not exactly sure why I haven't taken the time to check it out before. But I think it's time I do now.

I'm certain you will all be holding your collective breath to read my results. I'll post them on http://blog.nbc.com/CreedThoughts/ .

The problem I have with most local portland radio showsl is lack of show prep. Some jocks think they can just get on the air and wing it, That never works and its usually the most boring radio on the dial. These morning shows need to keep up with the current events and actually put some show prep into the show. Just winging it and talking about Nothing will turn your listeners off. Mike Chase was WAAAAY better on NRK (different demo, he was able to be more crude/ offensive. He is a bit more tame on the Wolf and not nearly as funny, But still entertaining.
