I've read many posts on this topic, but I thought I'd start a new one because I am still annoyed with Star's song choices. When Star first went on the air, I was excited about the possibility of a format targeted at my demographic (early 30s female). But the powers that be have never had a clue what I wanted to hear. And today, it's worse than ever. I thought Star was going to be something hip, with the occassional 80s or 90s HIP song thrown in. These days every time I turn on Star I hear 70s disco or John Mellencamp. Please, we don't need to hear "Jack and Diane" one more time, especially on a station that should be on the cutting edge of adult music. What's the deal? If I want to hear about Rod Stewart getting laid in "Tonight's the Night" I would turn to Magic. If I want to hear "Best of my Love" by the Emotions I would tune into Kool. I want to hear NEW stuff!! I was in Coos Bay over the weekend, where they have a satellite-run radio station (power 107) with programmers and DJ's who live who-knows-where and they do a much better job of programming their station. It seems to me in Star's case, local programmers and personalities have not been an asset. I won't critique each one, but Al Kline's style makes him sounds like a country DJ and I can't relate to him at all. Plus, he just doesn't SAY anything! Today, I literally heard (as a Gwen Stefani song faded out) "Star 102.3, Bon Jovi, Star 102.3" (Bon Jovi song starts). Okay, I think we get the point, it's Star 102.3! I could be positive and say, at least they tell you what freakin' artist you're hearing, unlike the Moose. That's a whole other topic! I just don't understand where music programmers are coming from sometimes and it's very disappointing.

Star 102.3's format should sound more like Coos Bay's Power 107, if they ever want to see anything above a 3 share, 12+. Cumulus (in Eugene) is clueless. However, Cumulus is properly programming 97.5 KRUZ in Santa Barbara.

Yeah, I agree, Cumulus has no idea what they're doing with KEHK. However, I'm not sure they have an idea what they're doing with any of their Eugene stations for that matter.

Geez Sparklewave, you want to hear Newer stuff huh???

Not enough Daltrey or the Plain White T's CRAP! BLAH! There is a reason I stoped listening to "new music stations" THE music blows CHUNKS! But on another note, I agree about the overplay of "jack and Diane". ANy PD who thinks" Jack and Diane" SHould be played all the time should be castrated!

One look at the Spring 2007 Arbitron will show that Cumulus is not doing a good job programming their Eugene stations.
For example, KZEL is a shadow of it's former self. After their "save KZEL" stunt which did exactly as expected by drawing in some numbers, those numbers have steadily dwindled the last two books.
KZEL needs a complete facelift including the replacement of their tired old DJs.

Why do you hate Mark Jeff and Cyd?

What did they ever do to you?

I actually like what KZEL has done with their music selection.
Back to Star, at 7:02 this evening I heard "Sister Goldenhair." I rest my case.
As for Daughtry, there are other newer artists out there who have substance. Examples are Paolo Nutini, James Morrison and Amy Winehouse (if she doesn't die of an overdose).

With KZEL playing the AAA currents, I'd position 102.3 as more of a CHR, without the hip hop.

CHR minus hip-hop = Hot AC.

Yes, a more CHR-leaning Hot AC.
