From listening today, it sounds like the old "KINK FM 102" station name is gone. They now refer to themselves as "KINK dot FM." I think it's a great idea given the fact that almost no one tunes a "dial" to about the 102 mark anymore. KINK is 101.9, so the old name was useless anyway in our digital world. Plus the "dot FM" domain name sounds solid as a positioner on-air. I think it's a positive change. Any thoughs?

Sounds fine. I think the other benefit is to people looking for their website at www.kink.fm.

Have you ever accidentally typed in www.kink.com? It is NOT safe for work.

Who's brilliant idea was it to use the call letters "KINK" in the first place?

I want to say that they've been using "kink.fm" for a while now, at least 6 mos. if not a year.

It didn't in 1968! It was owned by King Broadcasting and seemed like a natural. It also rhymed with "The Underground Link".

Why not say "KINK 101.9 FM"?

There aren't any other stations near 102. Why say 101.9 and confuse it with KUFO? It's also been part of their identity for nearly 39 years!

I think this is excellent branding. From here, many different technology forms can be leveraged.

kink.fm - streaming

kink.fm - special cd production

kink-fm HD

kink.fm - night time focus

kink.fm - concert at venue

kink.fm - your music, delivered (podcast, subscription content stream, all sorts of goodies)

kink.fm - music news you can use (yeah, that's an MTV thing, but nobody will care)

etc...

Flexible, catchy, relevant.

What more can one ask for?

Why not say "KINK 101.9 FM"?
Uh, they were "KINK FM 102," (yes, I hear the exact use of "FM 102" was extremely important,) so if they were to use the exact dial position, they'd probably be "KINK FM 101.9."
One other thing I've noticed is they do use 'on the air in Portland at 101.9' in some of the extended promos for the station. So, 102 doesn't seem to be used at all any more. I agree with the fact that there aren't any other 102-point-anythings in Portland, save for the EMF translator on 102.7. But, as was already pointed out, "102" doesn't show up anywhere on digital tuners.

Oh wow, I didn't realize they'd been saying it for months. I guess that proves that I think it fits well, because I do listen several times a week on average.

The three-digit ID could be "saved" by simply "adjusting" it to fit Grabel's Law:

"True to the music--at very high values of 101."
