Thought the last quote was interesting:
objections to the assignment of requested call signs will not be entertained at the FCC
Makes me wonder if this is a gotcha... be the next person to pick up the call letters KUNT, use them as part of the station name, (i.e. "News/Talk 86.9 KUNT") and get fined by the indecency police for doing so.
(Yes, I know 86.9 isn't used for FM in the US... thought I'd do that so people know this is fake.)

Ya,

Kinda like the bottom of the pot calling the kettle black, isnt it?

And I also like the bit about how that CEO laughed at his Broadcast Lawyer over the phone for making such a boo boo. Lots a "tounge in cheek" going on here.

I was told a (tongue-in-cheek) objection was filed to King Broadcasting's selection of the call KINK on the grounds it was an "ethnic slur." (The other joke was about their CP extension apps being mimeographed.) These were related by a devoted but harried noncom manager who'd had to counter a listener complaint to the FCC that the word "funk" was an obscenity.

It was then archaic (mid-19th thru early 20th century usage, referring to hair), which is what made it a stretch at the time.

I notice it has since transmogrified into an epithet for Koreans ("k" substituting for "ch").

Verbal minefields everywhere.

In the mid-sixties, when Oregon went to three-letter/three-digit license plates, their computer list of excluded potentially offensive combinations was leaked, of which some less-obvious ones ("LAP" and "SIT") drew hoo-has in Baker's Dozen.

I was in a networking class where the instructor liked to refer to cold-booting an unresponsive system as "boink." Most of us got it, but one naive young lady sitting next to me really liked the term (she said so, while writing it down) so I gently cautioned her, explaining it had other connotations she was obviously unaware of.

She was most unhappy to be so informed, apparently looking forward to using this snappy computer jargon.

You know what I remember !

KINK went on the air when I was a Junior @ Fort Vancouver High School. My friends and I thought the KINK call sign was strange because we took it as a Playboy Magazine type sexual inuendo. Like KINKY'''
