Well, it appears that the HD has been out on 1190 KEX since at least Monday morning... I really miss it and was wondering if anyone has any info on it?

Also, since about the same time (Monday morning) the Song Title/Artist on 94.7 KNRK has been stuck with the same Smashing Pumpkins song... It would be really nice if it started updating again :-)

While I'm at it, when will 89.1 KMHD get their analog signal delayed so it will match up with their HD signal... I thought this was a requirement of the license from iBiquity? It gets really annoying having the audio skip around when I get into dead zones...

KEX HD was off all weekend.

KMHD has had their analog delay off for quite a while. months it seems.

KBOO has no analog delay either. I didn't realize either(Now, I've had to write "either" 3 times.)of them ever had the delay. Everyone else is fine.

KBOO and KMHD having their analog delay turned off makes me wonder if this is accidental or whether this was done on purpose so that board operators could monitor the over-the-air signal in the control room. At a station running HD, how is the over-the-air signal supposed to be monitored?

We always had the air monitor turned all the way down while listening on the program monitor but we could still hear some scratching. It may have had to do with the monitor speaker being 2 feet from the transmitter but it worked.

Most stations have a predelay monitor set up in studio with some amount of processing.

Same way that a station would monitor with a 7 second delay in place.

Yes, I have heard of stations having the simulation of the on-air signal with processing that Dberichon describes. However, by not being able to monitor the real over-the-air signal, the board op loses the ability to tell if there are any malfunctions going on with the STL, transmitter, or any other part of the airchain. In my opinion, this is the main reason why it is important to listen to the air monitor. When I was at WITR, the engineers, including myself, were extremely anal about telling board-ops, "always listen to the air monitor; otherwise, you can't be sure that you're going out over the air.*" Of course, when we ran the profanity delay, the board op lost the ability to hear the real over-the-air feed. We considered this acceptable only because the majority of our broadcast day did not use the delay.

* I can share a humorous anecdote about some bozos who didn't listen to the air monitor and how they made fools of themselves in front of the GM.

Air talent hears a processed version of the program buss of their console.

The console has a button allowing the talent to hear actual air any time, delayed of course.

board ops with the ability to tell if there are any malfunctions with the STL, transmitter or any other part of the airchain??? surely you jest!!

I've found that it just doesn't do any good being extremely anal with board ops about anything.

Every now and then one comes along who wants to actually understand what it is they are doing, those ones get to really learn how to run the place.

Otherwise thats why the engineering department always has someone in the building with the actual knowledge of the remote control, monitoring, silence sense gear and of course the airchain. (any staton with the budget to do HD anyway)

I actually thought KEX had the HD processing dialed in rather well until I looked at my tuner and realized it was the analog.

To be honest, I sort of learned the same thing from my experiences at WITR. That particular scenario was a university station where many of the board ops/DJs were people who just wanted to crank up their favorite music. Many of them would do goofy things like play both the air and studio signals into the speakers simultaneously (our board let you do that) because they thought it "sounded better" or they would just listen to the studio output for the same reason. When I volunteered at KMHD, I noted that many of the on-air people listened to the studio feed. Blech.

The apathy part is just too bad because during the time that I got to run a board, I got a lot of satisfaction out of hearing the "finished product," if you will, and running a tight board. I am not trying to boast; I just considered the experience to be sort of like a craft.
