The Bald-Faced Truth (TM) with John Canzano to Debut This September on NewsRadio 750AM KXL Portland, Oregon (August 6, 2007) – Controversial sports columnist John Canzano of The Oregonian will bring his edgy style and opinions to NewsRadio 750AM KXL starting this September. The Bald-Faced Truth (TM) with John Canzano will air every weeknight. John Canzano is the lead sports columnist at The Oregonian. He's worked at five other daily newspapers including The San Jose Mercury News, where he covered the National Football League and Major League Baseball. As a beat reporter he's also covered a variety of programs including Purdue football and basketball, Notre Dame football and Indiana basketball under coach Bob Knight. In his career, Canzano has won numerous writing awards including Associated Press Sports Editors awards in column and enterprise writing. In 2007, The Associated Press Sports Editors named Canzano the nation's No. 2 sports columnist. He was recognized by The Press Club of Atlantic City as national sportswriter of the year in 2004. And Canzano was voted Oregon Sportswriter of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Canzano has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in commentary three times. And in 2002, he was named the nation's top investigative sports writer by the Associated Press News Executives Council. "As a listener of The Bald-Faced Truth (TM) on KXL you'll get unique insight, strong opinions, and an unfiltered behind-the-scenes look at my Oregonian column,” said show host John Canzano. “I'm going to bring you with me wherever the reporting takes me. It's unprecedented for a flagship station to give an outspoken critic such widespread autonomy. I won't filter, I won't lower my expectations, I won't stop telling you about inspiring stories when I find them, and I'm sure there will be days the people we're talking about on the show wished KXL had never done this." "John Canzano is undoubtedly the best known personality in Oregon’s sports media landscape,” said Tim McNamara, President and General Manager of Rose City Radio. “We’re ecstatic about giving him the platform to reach tens of thousands of local sports enthusiasts and to expand on his wildly popular commentaries in The Oregonian.” “John Canzano is a lightning-rod for controversy and nobody knows that better than we do,” said Mike Golub, Chief Operating Officer of the Portland Trail Blazers. “With that being said, we feel confident about the direction of our organization and the new chapter of the team. Portland sports fans are passionate about the Trail Blazers and passionate about John’s opinions. We’re excited to bring both to NewsRadio 750AM KXL, the flagship home of the Portland Trail Blazers. While we may not always agree with what John might say, this new partnership will add an unprecedented level of transparency.” Both the Portland Trail Blazers and Rose City Radio, parent company to NewsRadio 750AM KXL, are owned by Paul Allen.

It just sounds like the few minutes he does per day is leaving 1080TheFan and going to KXL. Big deal.

The part you didn't note here that's different is, this will be on 6pm - 8pm every evening. 2 hours to fill. I like Canzano mostly, and I wish him well, but 2 hours a night 5 nights a week (except when Blazer games conflict) can be a fairly heavy load for a newspaper columnist. Hopefully he'll get room to grow into it.

Looks like KXL is down to Larson & Savage as Canzano will be dumping John Gibson (replacement for Tony Snowjob) as the acceptable ratings right wingers. Maybe right wing radio can't play 24/7 anymore in Oregon.

And where will Mr. Snowjob go when he returns to radio?

I like it when Lars is on TV during his radio broadcast. There is his poster on the wall with Lars looking like Superman, then next to the poster, the Lars reality! Makes me laugh every time!

As I recall, KXL has tried this type of thing a couple of times in the past few years (Kevin the Rat?), but I hope this works out. A local sports show with an opinionated, intelligent, controversial host? Sounds like a good idea to me. I think he is very good on The Fan but that is a 5-10m segment. The 2h block will probably be a little rough going for a while but I too hope he is given the room to grow into it. I for one am looking forward to hearing it.

This is going to be really good stuff and great for that market profile. Curious to see if Canzano will be as opinionated on the air with the Blazers as he is in print and this is going to sort of kind of hurt The Fans ratings. Not sure how much loyalty that was on Canzanos part but this is good for that radio market.
