In only part of a ratings period, El Rey has become Salem's best performer and taken a strong lead in the spanish language competition. La GrandD is the only serious competitor left in the race. It's beginning to look like KIJZ has peaked so that may be an interesting one to watch. K103 is starting to look like a clear market winner with 3 straight 7 shares and well above everyone else! Congratulations are probably in order to Bruce and John!

No kidding. I'm looking at the numbers on Radio-Info (hopefully the rules about the ratings haven't been locked down so far you can't mention where you're looking at them!), which show the other Spanish-language stations sinking as fast as the Titanic. Most of the ratings of the English-language stations are within the normal deviation of each other.

I presume Tony is the Program Director. I no longer remember who got the job after Bill Minckler. It was just an afterthought on my part. Obviously a good PD is extremely important but Bruce was clearly a great choice to reteam with John and it's paid off well.

Poor MOOOOOVIN has droped in the 12+ numbers. Time is running out on Movin, I think a format flip will be coming shortly. They have done NOTHING to keep that station a float. I think those awful Tv ad's they ran with the "butts" shaking back and forth turned all three of their listeners off.

Really bad numbers for KUFO, Will change be coming??

Yup it sure aint lookin good at 1st ave, the numbers for KUFO and Mooooovin are not very impressive.

If Movin flips formats, I'm wondering if Spanish will come to 1075. What other format is left to put on 107.5??? Is there a new flavor of the month station that is creating any Buzz???
The latino format could work wonders. Now will the jocks speak spanish or english??

Notes from Clear Channel Portland chief Tony Coles:

K103 had a huge spring book! It was #1 – Persons 12+, #1 - Adults 25-54, #1 -Adults 18-49, and #1 Women 25-49. K103 was also #1 in cume!

NewsRadio 1190 KEX continues its reign as the market’s #1 AM. With Persons 12+ KEX jumps to #2. KEX improved with Adults 25-54 as well to tie with KUPL for #7.

Brian Bridgman and the team at Z100 had a great book! #1 Persons 18-34!!! If our records are correct, this is the first time in over seven years that KKRZ has been #1. The Persons 18-34 shares grew 5.1 – 6.3. Middays, PM Drive, and Nights all saw significant increases.

He continues to say "Congratulations to the amazing team at all five of our stations on some amazing accomplishments. Today was truly a great day for Clear Channel Radio Portland."

Now, just imagine how well Z100 might be doing, if it wasn't for the "chipmunk" factor.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it appears that the stations that are doing the best 12+ (yeah, I know nobody cares about 12+) are the ones that appeal to an older audience. I wonder whether the 25-54 numbers follow this trend. I'll bet they do.

It has seemed to me for the past three or four years that radio has been going after younger demos that are listening to iPods and streams instead. Look how far Jammin' and Z have fallen. It sounds like Movin' isn't doing much better.

It's kind of like CD's. Paul McCartney debuted his new CD at Starbucks. The theory: Older folks are less likely to download and more likely to buy CD's. The strategy seems to be working for McCartney.

What do YOU think will happen to radio as the older demos start to die off? I think radio will die with 'em.

I don't think it will die off.

Age is constant. There are always 18 to 24s, 25 - 40s, etc...

Those younger people now will tire of their pods sooner or later. They settle down, get busy, etc... maybe just want to connect differently.

Radio will be there.

Like always, it's dead simple, delivers an unmatched bang for the buck, offers a lot of programming, has just has a capacity build out, and the industry old guard will die at some point too.

Then watch those same non-listeners today, rise through the ranks and get the kinds of connections they can relate to on the air. Radio will be affected just like everything else is.

IMHO, we are just a bit out of sync because of the mega ownership. The normal dynamics where new stuff falls out of the normal churn have been attenuated in favor of cookie cutter formula radio.

It won't last. At some point the value proposition will be a big enough mismatch that the die hards will unload and we will then get to hear some new forms, identities and good things come from there.

KGON has changed a lot of their music lately, playing more 80s. However, it seems some of the on-air things they're doing are more interactive and listener participation-oriented than the "features" on the jukebox stations or even the other personality/DJ-driven stations.

The jukebox station (cough, Cough, CHARLIE) needs to add more air talent or their ratings will keep on dropping. Bring on the contests and live air talents!

KGON has done a great job of involving the listener.

I think that's a big reason for it's great 12+ numbers.

I agree Kgon is doing a great job! Charlie is hurting themselves by not at least getting an afternoon jock. Charlie should have an afternoon jock on the air, having fun with listners and promoting the big concert they have coming up. The whole jukebox thing can only last for so long. That station has so much potential, hopefully management will put some money into the station so they can get a few more "LIVE" jocks.

A nice showing for K-Hits as well! I think the message is that Portland responds positively when given a reason to listen. K-hits is fun and has outstanding momentum on air. KGON (even with a syndicated morning show) is community-focused and reminds the listeners that they're here in town and in touch with Portland. "Movin'" is another flash-in-the-pan, disposable format. My guess is we'll get Spanish on 107.5 or maybe a "Charlie" clone. KUFO has gone down hill in several steps, in my opinion. Here are the steps:

1) They got rid of Dog and Chop.
2) They lost Stern (the biggest impact)
3) Dave Numme left

Losing Dave Numme at Kufo was not a huge loss, Im guessing if he was still at KUFO the ratings would still be bad. Getting rid of Dog and Chop was a stupid move made by Numme, getting rid of Tom Turner was another stupid move by Numme. He lost his golden touch a long time ago, so Im guessing some new blood can only help KUFO. The problem I see with KUFO is that they are no longer relating to their demo. What ever happend to sex, drugs and Rock N'roll??? That station stood out and always did well in the ratings because they lived up to the Sex, drugs, and Rock N Roll demo and it WORKED WELL!!! Today when I turn on Kufo they sound like a poor top 40 station that plays rock music. Is KUFO trying to get female listeners????? If not, it sure sounds like they are, especially with the content they are putting on the air. Untill they start relating to the male demo KUFO will continue to drop in the ratings. Your average KUFO listner does not give a shit about Dancing with the stars, your average KUFO listener does not care about American idol. After listening to the Marconi show and hearing non stop conversations about American idol, I can totally understand why Kufo's ratings are SUCKING! Programing a rock station is not brain surgery, BUT YOU MUST Understand your demo!!!

Variety Hits on 107.5(Aren't those their call letters?)wouldn't be a Charlie clone; they'd be Jack!

Jack stations(at least the Jack in Vancity) seem to be programmed a bit tighter than Charlie is. There are songs played on Charlie that I can't imagine hearing on Jack. Charlie seems to sometime reach for the extremes every-so-often while Jack seems to play it safer.

I actually like Jack better than Charlie.(Don't tell Charlie...he might get jealous! Or maybe Charile is a she...hmmmm...) :-)

Since 95.5 seems to have lost it's touch, 107.5 could flip to a better CHR/Rhythmic format. :-)

Of course, if we're talking ALL stations, you can just go ahead and put OPB at the top of the list. I'm sure they killed, as they always do.
