I love the old top-40 shows that are rerunning on K-hits on Sunday mornings. After Casey reads the old credits at the end of the show, there is another set of credits mentioning who "digitally remastered" the show. Does anyone know how extensive this remastering was? I wonder if they took the voice tracks, and mixed the songs back in from CD, or if they took the whole show, which I assume played songs on turntables, and just remastered the reel-to-reel of the show in it's entirety.

It's done with the old shows. A couple of weeks ago they had "Question" from the Moody Blues and you could definately hear the clicks and pops from the turntable.

Glad you like the show.

To answer your question about how extensive it is...there is a person in Arkansas that claims to have the exclusive rights to record the albums digitally and then provides Premiere Radio with the masters and sells the shows as a vinyl/cd package on E-Bay. The reason I know this is that I have over 50 of the old AT 40 shows and I can't sell them according to him without facing a court battle with Premiere. I do find it a bit odd that Premiere Radio can stop us after purchasing the rights to the show saying that they hold exclusive rights to everything produced by ABC Watermark, even though they aren't the original owners. I don't have the money to fight Clear Channel who owns Premiere.

I'm loving it too. Kicking it off with the week I was born -- right around my birthday -- was really cool. Hearing some of these shows again in stereo -- instead of my little boyhood transistor -- is a kick. No dead dogs so far, but as I recall, that was in the 80s. :o)

It depends on the terms of the purchase. Even if they are not the authors or originators, they can buy those rights from the originator and that allows them all control over them.

Jimbo is right. Intellectual property always belongs to someone and most likely it belongs to Permiere now. If its not Premiere, the current owner isn't likely to let others make money from the old recordings either without wanting some (most?) of it.

I'm thinking that in the original contract with Watermark and the stations, there was a statement that the stations could only air the show limited times if not once, then the recordings were to be destroyed or returned, and no recording could be "sold". It would be absolutely dumb if Watermark attorneys didn't get this in the contract.

I'm also enjoying the old Casey kasem shows on K-hits, but as I was listening last weekend it sounded like Casey Was sped up. I havent heard Casey Kasem in 5 years, but I remember the last time I heard him he would talk a lot slower. Does anyone else notice that??

The last time you heard him may have been during a 90's-era broadcast- 20+ years after the reran show you heard on K-Hits. Maybe he slowed down over the years.

Today, I heard "Uneasy Rider" censored in 2 spots. That was followed by a lead up to a Carpenters song where Karen was pitching for a charity game. She did really well at which Casey pointed out, "pretty good for a girl"!

When "Uneasy Rider" was first spun in Portland, stations played the short version which didn't include the censored part. When I bought my copy, I was surprised it was 2 minutes longer.
