I'm at KHAS today, babysitting sitting in case the computer "explodes" during the station's live broadcasts from the Adams County Fair.

While searching the www, I found this:

http://www.deanejohnson.net/audio/WTIX-Deane_Johnson_Air_Check-5-10-66.shtml

Care to share some more stories Deane?

You got linked to only one of the pages on the site. Here's the full site with audio, photos and narrative on multiple stations mostly from the 60s.

http://www.deanejohnson.net/audio/

The below site houses my collection of radio station photos mostly from the late 50s and 60s.

There are three galleries. Most interesting is the one labeled "Radio Station Vintage Photos"

The first Rock n' Roll station I ever listened to was KISN from about the same time they went on-the-air until we moved.

My family moved from Portland to Denver in November of 1960. When we got there I discovered not just one fulltime Rock station but three! KIMN (which I didn't care for because the DJ's sounded they were in an echo chamber), KTLN (which I did like), and KICN. Lo and behold. My favorite station had moved from Portland to Denver at exactly the same time as I did! Except they had changed dial position from 910 to 710. Bill Western had made the move from KISN to KICN at about the same time. It took me several months to figure the whole deal out.

Great pictures! Great site Dean.

The picture of that swamp station site, my goodness ! And I thought my first radio gig was bad. KUIK in Hillsboro, Oregon. The old station site was out on the effluent backwashes of the Yamhill River south of town. There were health dept. signs up all over the building warning one and all that the water was dangerous to drink. So a 6 hour board shift required bottles of apple juice, thermoses of coffee or tea and sometimes Pepsi to keep the throat loose and the eyes bright.

They did have a working lavatory , however, so breaks for nature had a semblance of 20th century normalcy to them.

"The old station site was out on the effluent backwashes of the Yamhill River south of town."

Wrong. KUIK studios & transmitter were located at the time, approximately 2500 S.W. Hillsboro Hwy. It was the "Jackson Slough" that flowed by the site and at times formed a lake. Jackson Slough is fed by the Tualatin River. The Yamhill River is no where near the area. This land is now designated "Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve".

Regarding the word "normalcy": The story goes that it was coined by one of our Presidents, I'm thinking Herbert Hoover, who stumbled over the word "normality" and the former became part of the American lexicon.

Sorry, Its been awhile since I have lived or worked in that area of Oregon. The Yamhill is further west and south, I guess....Forgot about the Tualatin...anyway it certainly was a wetland and I remember that the tower was a Franklin type or one of those tipped dipoles. Where the element is center fed so that it is effectively a vertical dipole, rather unusual for that day and time. This was probably done so that they didnt have to install a ground radial system due to the marshy soil and it eliminated a ground buried or anchored coaxial feedline. Their feedline was an arial twin lead ladder line type feeding the center of the tower.

On Sunday AM when the church program was running, I used to go outside and look at the tower engineering and enjoy the grazing cows ruminating in the fields...actually it was quite relaxing.

I do know there was some kind of landfill near that place too and along with those backed up river waters is why the water was undrinkable out there. Yeah, I do remember now that area was called Jackson slough, now that you mention it. Thanks for straightening me out on this. No dissemination of false information intended here.

That's what I love about this website. Less than one hour after Kennewickman posted regarding his first radio gig, the Factoid Police pulled him over and set him straight.

You'd better have your have your facts straight if you're going to come reminiscing here buddy...........nice work Craig.

The word "normalcy" was coined by Warren G. Harding (or,most likely, his speechwriter) in his successful 1920 Presidential campaign, when he said the American people after the upheaval of World War I,were looking for "not nostrums but normalcy"

I won't admit to surfing on the job, much less admit listening to "Your Screw-Off At Work Station," but here is my pick website.

http://www.plan59.com/

Some of the images ended up on my work computer slide show/screen saver.

While I'm at work I continually scan CNN,Drudge, and some local news sites. I try to convince myself that it is helping me prep my show. The truth is somewhere in-between...yes, want to be able to communicate breaking news, but, also my inate interest in the news. So I am torn! Just an honest assessment. Can anyone relate? And if so, what a friggin' great job...doing what you would do even if you were not working? I feel lucky to be doing what I do.

Totally there Paul. I have gone to many of the links people have posted here and found show prep I'd otherwise not find or was aware of.

Skep- Sure the folks in that conservative town would totally be into it, but our set up bit would need to be pretty convincing.

I just heard the following on B97.3: "Petuala Clark - She led the British Invasion!" If she did, she was about a year an a half late!

She also must have written "Please Please Me","I Want to Hold Your Hand" "She Loves You" and so on all by herself. I mean,I liked Pet Clarke, but come on!
