I'm surprised that the public hasn't been outraged enough to cause change to happen. I won't fly anyway now unless I have no other option.

It's all President Bush's fault. Can't he do anything right?

Stop disrespecting the President of the United States, DD. It's CLINTON'S fault, obviously! Bush has been in office only 7 years and hasn't yet had enough time to deal with the airports issue. Clinton had two full terms and did nothing.

Uh, you are aware two terms is eight years? So, I'm not sure why Bush having one less year to deal with it matters that much. Oh I know, he's been fighting a BS war for most of that time. Let's face it, it's Reagan's fault. He broke the union and just let everything go to hell after that, typical Republican!

Meh... I can't get that page to load, so I can't read the article.
However, my generic answer is something will be allowed to happen, blamed on 'terrorists' from somewhere in the Middle East, so they can cram more garbage down our throats about this supposed "security" that does nothing; and social engineer the public into thinking National ID cards and constant surveillance are great and wonderful, all so the process can repeat.

The airport debacle is understandable.

Bush is the worst leader of a country in World History.

Bush is worse than Hitler? Worse than Saddam, Milosevic, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Stalin, Pol Pot? Worse than Idi Amin? Mugabe? Huh. Amazing.

Our airport problems are mainly due to de-regulation. On the surface, seems to be a republican issue, but if I'm not mistaken, Jimmy Carter was responsible for de-reg. If any industry needs to be re-regulated, aviation would be the one. Yes, might raise fares, but IMHO, be worth rescueing this integral part of our transportations system. Right now, airlines can do anything they want. And it is creating chaos.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of airline deregulation is that it lifted the restrictions on airlines themselves, as far as where and who they could serve. The airports themselves (physical structures) are usually publically owned and if they are falling apart, it seems to me that's due to a lack of public funding to keep up with the times.

Vitalogy - exactly. I can't speak for EVERY airport ... but working at PDX, I do know of that airport ... it's owned by the Port of Portland, who allocates the funds for upkeep, etc. I'm not sure if the FAA has jurisdiction over the tower structure itself ... but the Port has it over the airport itself and the surrounding structures on the property.

But Trixter - Clinton getting his hee-hee hoo-hoo'd by an intern is a far worse crime against humanity than is the needless deaths of over 3500 US troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis! Don't you KNOW this by now?!?

I bet the US has dumped more money into Baghdad International to make it safe and secure than it dumps into any US airport. I bet that the security screening at Baghdad International is fae better than what we get at PDX, or any other airport, with its hard-working but grossly underpaid TSA folks.

Priorities, priorities.

Its those SCAB air traffic controllers Reagan hired. After they joined a union, the feds had to cut somewhere else.

I was waiting forever to hear somebody utter a thing about PATCO.

Yes, deregulation was made a bigger mess -- and our skies were made less safe -- by the Reagan administration.
