I really enjoyed their programming this weekend, and I think a lot of other people did too.

...for Craig Adams. It has really been fun for us to have him covering vacations. No knock on you Jeff, but it is great to hear him when your line is in the water. :0)

I also would like to give a big belated thumbs up to the Cruisin' Weekend.

This station gets the chance to mine twenty of the greatest years in recorded music. The sheer volume of great tunes recorded and released between January 1, 1960 and December 31, 1979 is staggering, so that is probably why we all get so snarky and demanding.

Then the Easybeats kick in... mmmmm...

...for the "Motown Weekend" and all the classic tunes. Might I suggest -- especially since many sets kicked off with gems from Atlantic, Stax and others -- that you use the word "Soul" next time.

If it were dedicated to the output of artists from Detroit, or the Funk Brothers, or the talents discovered by Berry Gordy, or the songs of Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Holland-Dozier-Holland, it would have made perfect sense.

As it stands, well, it looks like the station is implying that Motown is synonymous with all Black music. I think Motown's own Rare Earth might mess up that theory, along with protests from label founders Ahmet Ertegun, Leonard Chess, Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton et al.

I hate to continue to grumble in a thank you thread, but the gentleman on this very moment is running half of his spots, songs and breaks in the wrong channel, or in cue. If there wasn't any bleed to be boosted, we wouldn't be able to hear it at all.

Unless something is on the fritz, this fellow has not earned his after-work Danish. At this moment, an ironic "Takin' Care of Business" rolls from BTO...

A couple of questions about the founders of Motown: Is Leonard Chess connected to Chess Records and is Estelle Axton Hoyt Axton's mother who wrote Heartbreak Hotel?

Leonard Chess is the founder of Chess Record, and Estelle Axton is not related to Hoyt Axton.

According to her biography, Aretha Franklin grew up in Detroit:

"Aretha Franklin's roots in gospel ran extremely deep. With her sisters Carolyn and Erma (both of whom would also have recording careers), she sang at the Detroit church of her father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, while growing up in the 1950s. In fact, she made her first recordings as a gospel artist at the age of 14. It has also been reported that Motown was interested in signing Aretha back in the days when it was a tiny start-up."

Well, heck, I did not take the locals into proper consideration. In fact, that clever tie-in with Aretha deserves some overdue credit -- very nice. This crow taco isn't bad either. :o)

This weekend has been Tops -- all Four of them. Thanks K-Hits!

Thank you! It sounds familiar now. I just didn't remember her first name. You have to wonder anytime you hear an unusual surname that matches up.
