I believe he was from Dallas OR. I never heard anyone sing "Cry" with him. I'll have to check on the specific week of my birth but "The Song From Moulin Rouge" was the big hit that year. And the winner is..."Vaya Con Dios" by Les Paul & Mary Ford. Les Paul invented electronic amplification. Imagine Rock music without it! |

Angie...Ah, Wonderland By Night. Yes, I did get tons of requests for it...from my Mom. That song was the first trumpet solo I ever played for a large audience. So when I was in my room learning new music, honking and tooting like a barnyard full of methane producers, she'd holler "Please open your door and play Wonderland By Night. And when you've finished, close the door...tight!" I was in the fifth grade at the time. BTW, having no sheet music or the Kaemphert recording, I learned it by ear from Louis Prima's rendition. |

digressing a minute I watched PBS American Masters on Les Paul. I am amazed at what he invented and his recording techniques. He was shown in a jazz club jamming. I'LL have to check but I think they showed him in a jam with Jeff Beck. Les Paul was popular when I came along. How High the Moon was the first of his I recall. Anyway, thought Id pass this along. |

Our friends at Wikipedia credit Les Paul with the first commecially released overdubbed track created with magnetic tape, but cite examples of previous overdubbed releases done with more primitive technology. |

My mother's is "When The Midnight Choo Choo Leaves For Alabam" by Arthur Collins and Byron Harlan from 1913. I noticed the same guys' names several times on different pages and decided to investigate. Apparently, they were a comic duo that were popular from roughly 1903-26. Unfortunately, several of their songs had titles that were so racist, I can't bring myself to mention them aloud or even in print! It's hard to believe there was a time when such a thing was not only tolerated but actually sold records! PS: The spellchecker checked one "Choo" but not the other. |
