This is completely personal but i'm damn proud of my boy so I thought i'd share. He'll be a senior next year and is currently 18. He has decided to go into the Navy. He took the military ASVAB test today. I think they call the ranking AFQT for which his test ranked him at 93 (The top score of the day mind you). 93-99 places him in the top 8 percentile of youth applicants. Category I career placement. Annapolis Naval Academy here he comes, he has decided to pursue a job in the nuclear program.

Sorry....just had to toot my own horn here for once!

Can I get a HOO-RAH!

HOOO - RAH!

I hope the Navy is a good fit for your boy, and that he gets all he can from it. I think there is no disputing the value of a good military experience. My best friend decided to go Navy (nuclear sub program) and I envy his experiences, training and skills. He didn't make a career of it, but seeing him go through the program makes me question to this day if it was something I should have done.

You know you are doing something right when your kids have the skills and make good choices like these. Way to go DT!

Thanks man! I'd like to think trying your best to bring them up good and do what you can to get them the best education along the way had a hand in it. He's a bright boy and in my mind has made an incredabely smart decision! Even if he does no make a career out of it he'll come out of it with an education that money just can't buy!

HOO-RAH!

There's nothing wrong with a military career or a stint in the military. At the very least, he'll have a well rounded education, and at best, he'll be instrumental in keeping the U.S. on the cutting edge of technology. Congrats!

With this being the toot-your-own-horn page, I thought I'd brag about my 6 grader getting straight A's all year. And I thought middle school was gonna be a nightmare.

Awesome and congrats!

Given how things are going energy wise, the skill set he is after, is highly likely to take him far in life.

Congrats DT, got a great kid there.

I believe everyone should do at least two years public service before college, be it military or something civilian, as our payment for our freedoms.

Congragulations, the military is a good carreer choice for many, and a great choice for someone wanting to get started in a career, or just see the world.

However to get into a service academy takes a congessional appointment, each congressman can appoint 2 people to each academy each year, or a presidential appointment which number about 20 per year, or be the son/daughter of a medal of Honor receipent. The military does send a very few, under 20, outstanding enlisted personel to the academies each year. Usually to the academy prep school first, which is a one year intense acedemic academy.

Also to get into an academy, you have to be in almost perfect physical health. Much tighter physical than a normal enlistment physical.

But if thats what he/she wants, and is prepared to work real hard, it is an attainable goal.

Thanks guys.
We know the academy require's an appointment but that give's him a goal to shoot for! He'll for sure get a good education and get into an engineering or technical related job given his test rating!

BTW Blogman. The great thing about this country is our freedom! Freedom to choose to serve if that is your calling. An all volunteer armed services is somehow more appealing to me than one staffed by forced servitude! IMHO of course!

Anyway...Thanks...we think he is a great kid as well!

Some of the outstanding graduates of West Point.

Interesting trivia, Robert E Lee is the only cadet to never get a demerit.
