Today 10,000 troops take part in "Operation Arrowhead Ripper"!

Where the hell do they get these crazy names from. I wonder if some dude was watching Dr. Strangelove and said...."Hey, let's call it Operation Arrowhead Ripper" in honor of Brig. Gen. Jack D. Ripper form the movie?

Anyway....good luck and be safe guys.

In "Dr. Strangelove," the name of the Air Force exercise where American B-52 bombers were staged at their Fail Safe points was called "Operation Drop Kick." General Ripper took it on his own initiative to order his wing to attack the Soviet Union.

("Dr. Strangelove" is my favorite movie of all time by the way.)

The names come from the Operations officer, at whichever command developes the operaton, unless its a classified operation, then a computer candomly picks one.

One of my favorite's as well. I love the role George C Scott had....it fit him perfectly as did hid role as Patton (another favorite)! But for a truly favorite war movie second only to Dr. Strangelove is of course Kelly's Hero's!

Love the end!

George C. Scott is PERFECT in "Dr. Strangelove" - his performance as General Buck Turgidson is (not surprisingly) one of my favorite in film. Just look at his facial expressions - they say as much as his words. I think my favorite part of his performance is, when questioned by President Muffley about whether the crippled B-52 could make it to its target, Turgidson gives a brilliant little monologue about American ingenuity and how his boys would get the job done...and lead to a nuclear war.

Peter Sellers is great too (in three roles!) but in a different way. His phone exchanges with Russian Premier Kissoff are classic and hilarious.

"Gentlemen! You can't fight in here - this is the War Room!"

This film occasionally pops up at a local cinema as a revival. If it ever does, perhaps I'll organize a group screening. I'm guessing a few deprived folks here - the younger folks - have never seen it. I admit, if you didn't grow up in at least part of the Cold War, it won't ring quite as true.
