Well, a career transition is upon me now. Lots to learn, people to meet, stuff to get done. I may be somewhat scarce for a while. All depends on how things go. Might be really easy! Not sure how long it will take, however. All I really know is that it will happen right now.

There are some things I wanted to understand and learn, trigged by some life events and politics in general. There is lots to discuss, but I must say the core elements I was looking for have largely been resolved. Some of that happened here, and for that I thank everyone huge.

We are a great group. I enjoy the company and conversation more than you know.

May the road rise to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face.

And rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

I enjoy everyone and this forum as well. Don't go Missing to long ya hear!

John

It's a move to ERP software, sales, account management, and some support - project planning.

Big sea change from the MCAD / PDM stuff I've done for too many years. That industry is being devalued at a steady clip. The top two reasons appear to be it being largely mature and being enveloped by the ERP stuff as a fairly high percentage of the small to mid size businesses seek integration of diverse business processes and data. It's becoming a requirement for engineering related activities to better mesh with the rest of the company. So, it's move up the food chain, or be slowly marginalized, or move into really techy niche solutions. (those pay well, but are generally a PITA)

More people focus, less tech focus as well.

Both of these are fairly big transitions, but welcome ones for a lot of reasons.

Same city, lots of different people though. Same company, as far as where I work, but different in terms of the products, services and people I work with.

You must have people skills!

BOB PORTER
Well, then I gotta ask, then why can't the customers just take the
specifications directly to the software people, huh?

TOM
Well, uh, uh, uh, because, uh, engineers are not good at dealing with
customers.

BOB SLYDELL
You physically take the specs from the customer?

TOM
Well, no, my, my secretary does that, or, or the fax.

BOB SLYDELL
Ah.

BOB PORTER
Then you must physically bring them to the software people.

TOM
Well...no. Yeah, I mean, sometimes.

BOB SLYDELL
Well, what would you say… you do here?

TOM
Well, look, I already told you. I deal with the goddamn customers so
the engineers don't have to!! I have people skills!! I am good at
dealing with people!!! Can't you understand that?!? WHAT THE HELL IS
WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!!!!!!!

God, I love "Office Space!" I watched it about 15 times the last few weeks before my final day at Intel a few years ago; I had the "Office Space" soundtrack blaring from my CD player as I drove from the Intel parking lot for the last time. It was quite a helpful film, actually, in getting me in the right frame of mind to leave.

Good luck, Missing, in your career transition!

Years after having seen "Office Space" a few dozen times and being able to quote the line, "Why does it say 'paper jam' when there IS no Paper Jam!!!" and "'PC Load Letter?' What the fuck does THAT mean?", I actually encountered an old HP laser printer that displayed the "PC Load Letter" message.

What the fuck DOES that mean???

"Paper Cassette Load Letter" size paper!

(Darktemper beat me to it! However, there is a picture of the infernal display on my link.)

"The actual meaning of the message is very convoluted: "PC" stands for "Paper Cassette", the tray that holds blank paper for the printer to use. "Load", in this context, is an instruction to refill. "Letter" is the standard paper size used in the United States and Canada. Thus, the error is instructing the user to refill the letter paper tray. A variant is PC LOAD LEGAL, meaning that the printer requires legal size paper be loaded."

By the way, what would you do if you had a million dollars?

Hah y'all are cracking me up with the Office Space quotes ... makes me want to go dig out my DVD. I SO want to take my fax machine at the airport out to a field with bats ... someday I WILL!

Good luck KSKD, hope to see you at the Rush concert! (DT and I will reserve you a spot at Billygan's for a brewski!)

"Corporate accounts payable, Nina speaking. Just a moment."

(That's only funny if you've met me. I also own a coffee cup shown being used in the movie by a certain person who shares the same last name as me...)

...And if things go well I might be showing...my O-face.

May you show your O-face for your new job...
