What are some movies that have been filmed in the Pacific Northwest?

I seem to recall "The Goonies" was filmed in Astoria.

"Sometimes a Great Notion"
Was filmed on and along the Siletz river on the Central Oregon Coast.

"War Garmes"
There were scenes from both Salem Oregon and Seattle Washington in that one.

Off the top of my head:

"The General" - Buster Keaton
"Mr. Holland's Opus" - Richard Dreyfus
"The Hunted" - Tommy Lee Jones
"Short Circuit" - Steve Guttenberg
and that bad one with Madonna...

Shot here in Oregon, "My Own Private Idaho" and "Personal Best" were both groundbreakers that discussed -- collective gasps and whispers -- homosexuality.

"Permanent Record" was shot in Oregon. In 1987, when they were filming at Benson High School, some of the day to day activity of KBPS was affected by the crew and cast. I remember that the generators on the roach coach and trailers bled into the microphones of the upstairs studio. We were more curious than annoyed, but in the end, we were mighty disappointed that it was such a lousy movie. "River's Edge" was far better with essentially the same tired plot.

"Drugstore Cowboy" was shot all over town. I remember the crew at my favorite little soda fountain and post office, Seaton's Pharmacy. They gave Yosh enough money that he removed the window above the door, taking with it the painted sign that said "Coca-Cola" for years and years. All the trouble was to install a window that could be "broken into" when the Dillon character sees that it is swung outward and open. The old backlit "Portland Adventist Hospital" sign would have looked cool in that sequence. I believe it was in storage and could have been reinstalled for the shots. I also can't help but wish Gus had included the big star on the side of the PAH building. My Father built that one Christmas years ago, and it hung there for a long time. Perhaps it will be refurbished and hung again. I hope so. Another silly part of the movie is the "getaway to nowhere" in the pickup. Had they actually continued west in the parking lot -- where there is no exit -- they would have gone through a fence and into a doctor's office. For a "Portlander" he missed some fine opportunities to feature the town as it once was, but made a good picture nonetheless.

Here is a link for a few other Oregon movies filmed after 1969:

Lets not forget Madonna's masterpiece "Body Of Evidence".
Back in 91' I remember them filming in downtown portland for that movie. The most pathetiic part is that I rented that piece of Crap movie. Thats 2 hours I will never get back!
On a lighter note, in one of the scenes you can See The Z100 van.

The Ox and the Eye: filmed around Coos Bay. My favorite part is when they cross the North Bend bridge and there is a sign that says "WELCOME TO OREGON". Also, they filmed most of the bar scenes in Gussies dine and dance on Newmark Ave in Coos Bay. On the way to the bar they get into a conversation about the name "COOS" bay which is pretty funny. It is the first time I have ever heard "COOS" and it's alternate meaning. Also, my brother in law was filmed as an extra drinking a brewski, funny thing is he is a recovering alcoholic. Hilarious.

Bird on a Wire was filmed in Vancouver, BC ... if that counts.

A rare B&W 1960's film called "The Slender Thread" with Sidney Poitier dealt with then relatively new "crisis centers". The shots of mid-1960's Seattle are amazing! Very hard to find, very occasionally shown on cable.

Yeah, Buns, "The Hunted" was mentioned and you're right, it was gawd-awful. I was out there shooting pictures of the "MAX Train" going across the Hawthorne Bridge while they were filming. In the film, it takes about 10 minutes for the MAX to completely cross the bridge going at normal speed (whereas you can walk it in, uh, about 4 minutes).

They also filmed "Men of Honor" with DeNiro and Cuba Gooding, Jr. plus Charlize Theron in Longview(?) and Portland, I think. I didn't see any of that filming or even see the movie (which I hear was also pretty bad), but while the cast and crew were in town, Charlize got to see a private screening of "The Cider House Rules" a few months before it was released (Film got a "Best Picture" nomination). A buddy of mine happened to manage the theatre where she saw the film with an entourage of about 10 people including her mother. He let me sneak in and sit about 15 seats away from her. There were only about 20 people in the whole large theatre - pretty cool. At the end we applauded. Honestly I could barely recognize Charlize - she wasn't wearing her makeup, but she had a THICK South African accent that she has (publicly, anyway) shed for good American accent. I was way too shy to even approach her anyway.

My Dad said that he met Robert Mitchum (yum) at a U of O (drinking!) party while he was there filming "Rachel and the Stranger" around Eugene in about 1947. My Dad said he was lots of fun and told some amazing dirty jokes.

My brother-in-law is in the made-for-TV movie 'Dead By Sunset' about the guy who killed his wife off of Hwy 26. You boys who watch Lifetime Channel might have seen it, they seem to show it a lot...

"Promise" (1986), a made for TV movie starring James Garner and James Woods was filmed at an old farmhouse just a few miles north of Corvallis off HWY 20.

Mrs_merkin...my Dad also met Mr. Mitchum. It was after a wild weekend retreat atop Hart Mountain near Lakeview in southern Oregon in the late '60's. Dad and my Uncle stopped at a little tavern for a cold one, where Mr. Mitchum was sitting alone at the bar. They invited him to join them, which he did. Dad reported that Mr. Mitchum was very affable and, as he put it,"Told some real good stories." He left it at that, but I think I know what he meant. I sure would have liked to have been there!

As long as we're talking made-for-TV movies:

"Quarterback Princess" (I think it starred Helen Hunt and featured a cameo of Rick Metzger --as what else--a sports reporter.) -Filmed mostly in and near McMinnville.(early mid 80's it think)

"Fire" Irwin Allen NBC tv disaster movie made around mid-late 70's filmed near Flying 'M' Ranch and featuring a young 'Pre-CHiPs' Erik Estrada as a convict at a work camp who discards a lit smoke and starts a forest fire.

"Flood!"(1976) another Irwin Allen disaster movie made for NBC, filmed near Brownsville, OR.

as far as theatrical releases go:

"Are We There Yet?" with Ice Cube had some exteriors filmed in PDX, but most of the movie was filmed in Vancouver, BC(the first part of the movie is supposed to be set in PDX.)

Roger nice list of extra work. I thought of doing some of that. Actually looked into doing extra work for Mr. Holland’s Opus but the hours and pay wasn't worth being in the film.

I do loads of auditions for TV, radio, print and other interesting on camera work. Fascinating business and loads of fun, but I have stayed away from film. Long days, low pay.

I auditioned yesterday for a CD-ROM/Web Interactive math program. It's an all day shoot, and the pay is okay, not great. What they pay me all day I can make in an hour from my home business. However in this case it broadens my resume if I get it.

I did it for the food

:-D

Yes, usually the pay sucks, But Halloweentown was 6 days a week for 4 weeks, and Blaze of Glory I was a stand in for Brad Whitford and photo double, so that was also 3 plus weeks and better pay. Usually the extra stuff is a day or two of sitting and an hour of standing. But I usually had the time for it.

Not sure who is casting most of the extras stuff in PDX now. Went through 3 good ones while I was a regular, but the fourth one wasn't so hot and with her, I wasn't on the "A" list anymore.

Maybe since the canadian dollar has dropped back some of the work will come back down.....

NOTHING IN VANCOUVER COUNTS! Working there is all but impossible, the work permit is for specific days not a time period and while I could have added dozens more, I could never get enough lead time on the job date to get a permit processed, and at the last, the permit cost more than the pay!

Danny Stoltz Casting/Extras Only is probably the most notable in Portland. I have had many auditions at his studio for non-movie roles. Danny started at 16 yrs of age and is now a veteran of the industry and he's not even 30 yet.

AH yes, young Danny. I remember him, never worked through him, but some of the companies used multiple agencies and he would put a few people in. He wasn't "THE" agency at the time, but the others backstabbed and ate each other.....

Good for him. Next time you go in let me know, and I'll forward some info to you and have you get his "requirements" for me.

Candian Dollar rate means that the cost advantage to filming in VAN is gone.... at 1.35 - 1.45 it was a great savings to U.S. film producers. Now that is gone. Wa and OR film boards need to push harder for productions.

I just scanned this thread so it may have been mentioned but the 1973 remake of Lost Horizon was filmed on Mt Hood and at Eagle Fern Park out near Estacada. Others that come to mind are The Last Innocent Man and Kansas City Bomber. In the first one, there's a scene where you look out the window to the Jackson Tower and in the second, through the rear car window is Lani Louie's, the old Chinese restaurant on McLoughlin Blvd. There's another big movie where the main characters are on SW Broadway and you can clearly see the Fox, Music Box and Orpheum theaters. If I never mentioned it before, I knew an old man who owned a 1966 sports car of some kind that he loaned for the making of Mr Holland's Opus. The car was in perfect condition! He was quite a fellow: In hes younger years, he had his own band where he wrote, arranged, sang and played the drums!

I think the Dolly Parton James Woods movie was one of the few I missed getting into.

RE the old car..... 50 bucks a day if they used it 75 if he went with it....... sometimes more.

usually we got an extra 10 bucks a day if we used our own car in a shoot as extras. They paid more if they wanted specific vehicles
