I'm sure that "Bill Beecher" in those real estate ads is "Bill Jackson" formerly of The Mix and KUFO. It's the commercial where he thumbs through a wad of cash claiming he'll sell your house "or pay you $1000!"

Hey Randy,

Brought back some great memories on that one! I have a BDF t-shirt around the garage somewhere. We had some great guys around at that time. I just spoke with Roger Mason the other day. He's a stock broker now...and of course Dale Scott is an American League Umpire. (just some of the jobs a computer can't do....yet)

I have an old video, which you are in, that Dale shot inside KBDF for an LCC class project. Time has not been kind to the oxide on the tape but I have a semi-viewable copy I hope to transfer to DVD soon.

I am a proud owner of a Blockbuster gift card thanks to my former co-worker and sometimes financial guru Bill Jackson. You can be too by getting one of his free-of-charge newsletter. Just be one of the first to answer his trivia question (it's on one of the inside pages) and call in. Oh by the way, I talked with Bill at the beginning of summer and asked if he would do a morning show w/ me...he said he enjoyed waking up at 7:30 now.

This wasn't meant to turn into a KBDF blog, but Randy and Bill did stir up some great memories for me. Bill was right, there were a lot of good jocks that came out of BDF. Richard Harker brought me on board as Scott Bronson, PD in'76. Craig Stevens was already doing mornings, Kris Michaels (aka Jack Elliot, KJR) was mid-days, coming from Coos Bay, I hired Bill out of Bend in'77 and Roger from K-DON in Salinas. I still have antenna balls (TMI?), stickers, T-shirts and a group photo by our Fan Van. Cancer got Craig, Kris left Seattle for Philly, Roger was a main stay at KINK, Dale Scott was a junior at Sheldon High doing weekends (and ump'ing little league)and we all know Bill did (and still does) really well here in PDX. I ended up in PDX via Seattle (KING-KJR) & San Francisco. But we all had a blast as a 'team' at KBDF giving it it's only #1 book in the spring of 77.
Randy, let us know when you transfer that film to DVD! Oh, and good job on the spot, Bill...is that real money??

Its a shame Bill Jackson is NOT in radio anymore, A DAMN FUNNY MAN!! I always felt bad for him when He was doing mornings on Mix 1075 because he couldn't bring out his true humor. But man, the stuff I remember him doing on KUFO was dAMN FUNNY!

For those with an interest in Eugene radio, I have finally transferred that KBDF video, circa 1979, to DVD. It was produced by Dale Scott and contains interviews with Bill Jackson, PD Russ Daniels, and GM Rob Skinner, among others.

The video quality from the old Memorex U-Matic master is poor, but viewable.

On the same disc is an interview with former KZEL General Manager, Jay West by a group of LCC students, circa 1978, not long before the station was sold to Rob Skinner & Co.

The discs are free for a limited time. However, if you have any old airchecks to share, especially harder to find ones from Eugene, you're welcome to post them someplace like Divshare where we can all hear them. I would have considered posting the videos someplace but I have no experience in converting video to a low bitrate format suitable for posting, or however it works.

If you want one of the DVDs, email me at KBDF1280@hotmail.com.

(Bump)

I still have some of those KBDF/KZEL DVDs circa 1978/79 featuring Dale Scott, Bill Jackson, Bob Valdez, Jay West, etc.

They are free for the asking. Contact me via the email link in the above post.

KBDF was only #1 for 1 book?

KBDF sounded #1 for longer than that. Their image dominated, with thousands of KBDF stickers. Ralph Petti then brought KUGN's stickers into the market but I don't think it was quite as saturated. I'm sure KBDF was #1 with teens all through the mid and late 70s. Their 5k daytime and 1k directional nightime sounded much louder than 50k KPNW (thanks to Ickabod)

Dale Scott taught me how to run the mixing board at KRVM. He had a golden voice and was a great talent even in high school. At KRVM at that time, you were allowed to play anything you wanted. We were the only 2 guys that played Top-40. I knew he loved baseball, but as much as he sang those KFRC TM jingles, I thought he would end up in the bay area.

Everyone else at Sheldon High tried to emulate KZEL and KFMY by allowing fade-outs, back-announcing the last 6 songs, and pretending like they just woke up from a weekend hang-over. Dale and myself were the tight format higher energy "commercial sell-outs."

What happened to Chucker O'Neal?

What happened to Chucker O'Neal?
Unfortunately Greg, I let up-chucker go when we were trying to beat KUGN in early '77. He wasn't taking direction and needless to say, pucking all over the air, so Bill Jackson replace Chuck. Last I heard (1978??) Chuck was at our then sister station KYJC in Medford.
It's true we only had one #1 book 12+ and yes, it is also true we owned teens for many of those other books.
Credit Richard Harker for those stickers. We cruised everyday in our Van handing them out and rewarding those who displayed them with various gifts and prizes....ah, those were the days of freebees and a liveable wage, nearly.

Hey Bill:
Hang in there, man. Even some of those payday loan places are still in business in Portland because they played by the rules and were honest to begin with, watched the fly-by-nights close up shop, and are still in business by playing by the new rules in place today. So, if they can stay in their biz, anyone probably can (unless that person's biz is radio)!
