I am not a fan of threads that might get pirate stations busted. However, I don't see the harm in talking about pirates that have been off the air for some time. In the nine years that I have been in the Portland area, I have heard a fair number of pirates, and I was wondering if anyone remembers any of the following....

KPRA 96.7: This station was on regularly until they were raided by the FCC about a year ago.

Delta FM 100.7 This station played reggae and classic ska. The last broadcast that I heard from them broke from the reggae/ska format to play Ernie Hopseker's history of Portland radio.

UP campus station on 1580 For a while, this station was running pretty big power, allowing it to be heard for a few miles. I have not heard them in a few years, so I don't know if they cut back their power, if they just turned off their AM service, or if they went back to carrier current.

Mystery Oldies station on 810 (honorable mention) While listening to KGO, I once heard a mystery signal pop up briefly on the 810 frequency (off by a few hundred Hz), with oldies music. I have no clue whether this signal originated in the Portland area or if it was skip.

Energy 98.1 This was a Beaverton station that played dance music. They were shut down by the FCC sometime around 2003.

Party 98.1 This was another dance music station heard in Portland that disappeared shortly before Energy 98.1 was shut down.

Oldies Pirate on 98.1 I heard this station a few times in the winter of 2003.

"Campus" station on 104.1 In 2000, while driving around the Mt. Tabor area, I briefly heard a station playing heavy metal. The DJs were making some comment about their show being too shocking for the student body of their campus.

Rap pirate on 104.1 This station was occasionally heard in 1999 or 2000.

Techno pirate on 104.1 This station was ocassionally heard in 1999 or 2000. Perhaps, this was "DJ Schmeejay?"

(Note: to the best of my mnemonic abilities, I have listed the stations in reverse order by date last heard.)

The "Campus Station" in 2000 was KRRC Reed College. They sometimes had a pretty good signal in the Mt. Tabor area back then.

Today, I heard what I thought was a pirate on 93.5 until I got a legal ID! I think it was a translator for KLYQ Longview. I couldn't quite make out the calls but heard "Longview/Kelso". I didn't know they even had a translator and certainly didn't expect to hear it in NW Portland.

Perhaps it was K228EU (93.5) in Woodland:

Repeater for KZOE, Longview... 60 dBu almost to the center of Vancouver. I think that it was 93.3 before the KTRO frequency shuffle.

This sounded more like some kind of commercial Rock, like Hot AC.

Yes, the Woodland "Way FM" translator moved (from 93.3) to 93.5, when 93.1 signed on in Portland.

Wouldn't it be cool to run a pirate translator? :-)

Put one on top of a hill near Castle Rock with a flamethrower to broadcast Seattle's 107.7 down here?

Just what is the FCC gonna do?

I said:

"Repeater for KZOE, Longview"

Oops! need to update my list, Way FM (90.3) in Longview is now KWYQ. I just heard (on the 93.5 translator) a clear ID with my antenna pointed North (I am in Hillsboro). I am hearing what I would call "Christian Rock".

One you don't have your list was running old airchecks of KISN, KGW and such on Friday/Saturday nights about a year ago. Or is that one not included because it's still going on?

It's unfortunate that most of the likely unlicensed broadcasting frequencies are being eaten up by translators running crapola.

That WAS "Delta-FM" on 100.7 The old airchecks were the last broadcast that I heard from this pirate.

Another station that I forgot to mention was the Tanasbourne Dead Air Pirate on 104.1. In 1998/1999, there was a signal on that frequency in the vicinity of 185th Ave. and Cornell in Hillsboro that broadcast a stereo pilot tone and nothing else. At the time, I was living in the Club at Tanasboune apartments on 188th, and from that location, the signal was strong enough to trigger the stereo indicator on a Walkman radio. I suspect that the transmitter power was about 1 Watt, judging by the coverage. This pirate went dark long before KFIS came on the air.
