Hmm. Visually it looks decent. Has a tinge of Terry Gilliam in there somewhere - grand - epic. Looks to be a story weaved from Beatles lyrics ( Eddie Izzard as " Mr. Kite " and Bono in there too ).

It's touchy to use Beatles songs covered by others. Jude and Lucy? Hmmm. Reminds me of a less baroque Moulin Rouge.

I don't know, man. Evan Rachel Wood can act ( Anyone else seen Down in the Valley w/ Edward Norton? ). But it's looks like a kind of thin story. And if it smacks too much of a musical - then I'll probably not like it as much.

I will say though, it took longer to put a Beatles project like this together than I would have guessed. At the very least, it will be different. And I'm ok with that.

Not to hijack the thread - but I'm holding out to see how Johnny Depp does as Freddie Mercury in the biopic of Queen.

DT...even the kids, who will see *anything* Marvel comic related, are not psyched about the Silver Surfer. But I may take them anyway despite their protests, because Jessica Alba must be seen...absolutely *must* be seen...she deserves no less.

I was gonna say that....but you got the glory there dude! I AGREE. Best movie she ever made IMHO....Sin City...yah baby!

BTW....Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba) is back in 2008 in Frank Millers "Sin City 2"! Loved the first one and hope the second one is equally as good!

For me going to the movies these days I find it hard to justify the high price and being forced to sit through commercials rather than coming attractions. With that said I have never seen Moulin Rouge which is being compared to this Across the Universe. I watched the trailer and this would definetely be a movie I would choose to see in the theatre.

"Not to hijack the thread - but I'm holding out to see how Johnny Depp does as Freddie Mercury in the biopic of Queen." Wait I thought Sashca Baron Cohen was on board to play Mercury in the Queen Biopic?

LOL No but really Queen is my all time favorite. I would love to see a Queen biopic. My biggest problem though is that for a project like this to really work well it not only needs great casting but also a great filmmaker to bring the story of Queen to the big screen. I have yet to find an actor today that makes me go "Hey he would be a great fit for the Freddie Mercury role". But If I were to pick just one filmmaker that could truly do justice for a Queen Biopic it would be hands down Gus Van Sant.

Again sorry to highjack the thread but BTW I read yesterday in the Mercury that Van Sant's next film project will be the film adaptation of Ken Kesey's Kool Aide Acid Test. That is gonna be an fn' trip!

Hi-Jack away.....just don't try and turn it into another political debate. I know this is the "Political" section but it's the same ol' shit day after day and it get's old. I try to focus on just the "Other" aspect on this side, I find it less infuriating, Humor is always a good thing and: "If you can't laugh at yourself then just who can you laugh at? I get a good chuckle every morning when looking in the mirror, Sheez, what the hell happened to you man....you look like crap! You put on weight dude....and were the hell did your hair go....never mind I see it stuck in the shower drain!"

"Wait I thought Sashca Baron Cohen was on board to play Mercury in the Queen Biopic?"

I guess that was a rumor. His publicist finally had to formally deny it. He's got the look - but I don't know about his acting chops. I also read that Brian May wants Depp.

I haven't heard of a director yet. Oliver Stone already did The Doors - and I thought he did it well - but that was his generation. And style. I'd LOVE to see a Paul Thomas Anderson treatment for the script. Magnolia is my favorite movie. I'd like to see what he could do. Maybe Cameron Crowe.

Chickenjuggler those are two very good suggestions for director.

I like Magnolia and have to watch every time its on cable. Which is at least once or twice a year. The only thing about the whole movie that for the life of me I just can't figure out is the raining frogs at the end.

Anyone care to let me know what it is an analogy for?

There are multiple hints, using visuals, throughout the film. One is that there are Magnolias - or pictures of them - are just about every place filmed.

There are hidden " Exodus 8:2 " - plague of frogs. It's alluded to in the film more than once. A poster in the background is where I first spotted it.

My thinking was that at the end the shit just hits the fan for the characters and it was somewhat of a symbolic gesture on the part of the storyteller that no matter how bad things are it could always be worse or at least is worse for someone else out there.

MAN I love that movie. It's very deep. Really nailed me. Tom Cruise does some of his best work next to Jason Robards. But really, it's about everything. AT least, everything that's important to me.

OK....Just got back from Fantastic Four/Silver Surfer and it was OK. Unless your a comic book fan you will probably not like it to well. Jessica Alba is pretty hot and all but seemed a little to made up and stiff! (hang on I think I left the door open). Anyway the end did not follow how the original story went in the comic book series although it did end probably the only way they could. For the unenthusiastic Marvel movie goer.....spend your money elsewhere and wait for the DVD!

2 weeks then it's Live Free or Die Hard!

Jessica Alba ... skeet skeet skeet. Still not enough to make me want to go see the movie.

Casting Freddie Mercury could well be one of the toughest gigs out there ... and it isn't just the "look", because makeup and stuff is used for that ... wow, tough job there.

The most difficult part about casting the role of Freddie Mercury is not the looks issue, but instead finding an actor who can sing like he could.

I think I would rather see a lip-sync. It's not that Queen is sacred to me and that I don't want it touched. It would just be distracting to know those songs SO well, and hear them sung by someone else. I mean yeah, a cover is a cover - George Michael covering Sombody To Love was spot on - but he wasn't pretending to be Freddie. I don't know. I could be surprised. I'd rather have a great script and great acting before I'd be willing to compromise on hearing it not be great.

As a life-long Queen fan ( in America, no less ) I know there are elements of Freddie's life that will be interesting enough to make a film out of. But in America, the threshold is quite low. Go just about anywhere else on the world and you've got a different group of fans that need to be pleased. Queen is a VERY different band to just about every other country than here in the States. Frankly, Id rather see it a film as majestic ( no pun intended ) as the rest of the world sees Queen. Different songs were hits in Europe and Japan as were hits here in the States. Those songs painted a different picture than we see them. I'm not saying the Queen is underrated in the States - but if there is a choice between making people in the States understand why Queen was popular vs. reminding the rest of the globe why they were popular, I'll take the latter.

I hope it's epic. It deserves to be epic. I say make a film that is NOT for quasi-fans in the States. Make a film for the rest of the globe that really embraced Queen for the whole of 20 years. Not just the 4 years that Queen did something in the States.

OK - yes - I have thought about it more than some others. Sue me.

CJ I totally agree!
With one exception being that Queen is Overrated in the United States. Most fans of Queen in the US are more into the greatest hits of Queen. Whereas I much rather enjoy the deeper tracks and especially the first two albums which are very different from the rest of there catalog. Also I am a sucker for Melencholy Blues and So Dear Friends. Two songs which I have let my family know must be played at my funeral.
And my favorite Queen song of all time though is the first track off the first album. Keep Yourself Alive

Hey guys, How about Quentin Tarantino directing the Queen movie?

Although if Tarantino did direct the new Queen movie there would be an unnecessary amount of blood and gore in the movie.

Ha.....I'd like to see him do "Road Runner"! You know "Wile E. Coyote" would finally catch him, behead him, watch him run around with no head spewing blood, then cook and eat him! And all in Black and White except the Red Blood!

Tarantino has anough GLAM in him to pull it off visually. He'd make it a spectacle. He'd have to keep the storytelling in check though. I want a good script.

Not a terrible idea, Justin.

Hey Cj What do you mean by "He'd have to keep the storytelling in check though"? The best part of a Tarantino movie is the dialogue, he is genius in that department.
The only problem I see with Tarantino directing the movie is that he would focus a lot on the Drugs and a lot of violence would end up in the movie. I think he would almost fabricate the violence, just to put his "Tarantino" trademark on the movie. If you ever watch a Tarantino movie you can always expect 3 things
1. A great script
2. Lots of Violence
3. Lots of drug use
Not that theres any thing wrong with this, but I'm worried it would take away from other important aspects of Freddie Mercury.

He tells GREAT stories that nobody already knows. And tells them VERY well. I would just hope for a good story - and I suspect that the story is better told by someone else.

Who knows though? I can't see it just yet with Tarantino at the helm for the script. He can SHOOT anything. I wonder who IS working on the script(s)?
