Air America To End News Service

By Brida Connolly

According to a report in Thursday's (June 14) New York Daily News, Air America Radio is dropping its news service at the end of this month. The story quotes a staff memo from AAR COO Scott Elberg that says the decision was "based solely on economics" and continues, "We spent the last three months looking at all the options. In the end, it didn't work." The AAR news service has four staff members.

Air America's post-bankruptcy sale to Green Family Media, headed by New York real estate magnate Stephen Green and his brother Mark, closed in March.

Thank goodness! Actually, the remaining news people weren't bad - especially Bill Crowley, who is superb. They god rid of some of the awful ones already. But I don't think AAR needs a news service. Still, it's interesting to see the network changing and evolving.

I wonder what news service KPOJ will pick up now? I wish they would drop ABC (a likely choice given that that's their weekend option) in favor of someone else.

Eugene's KOPT has been running CNN Radio News at the top of the hour since day one.

Does CNN Radio have a Portland affiliate?

Yes, Bill Crowley had a good news delivery. But all politics aside, AA's news was horrible. Not well written, not well delivered (by most) no actualities or natural sound, and most annoying of all, they couldn't time their 'casts! Sometimes they'd get cut off at the end because the went over 2 minutes, sometimes they'd.....have....to....stretch...their...last...sentence to fill. Good decision for AA to drop news. I think ABC does the best job with radio news. CNN's okay. I miss Mutual, actually.

Bill Crowley still has a good news delivery - AAR news goes until the end of June. It's not just his delivery; he simply sounds like a news professional in the stories he picks and how he reports them. Some of the (now departed) AAR news people were doing pretty blatant commentary during their "newscasts" and I found that quite annoying.

ABC is a mixed bag. They defintely do a good job in some ways, but in others I find their reports too trivial. They seem to end their reports with a "light" story that isn't really news at all - like the guy in Michgan who found a ring in a bowling alley 20 years after losing it there. Who CARES?

There currently is no CBS affiliate in Portland. Wonder if KPOJ would go with them?
