From The News Review:
Question:
L.B. of Roseburg wants to know why KISS FM played “The Candyman” by Sammy Davis Jr. all weekend long. “It drove us crazy!” she said.

Answer:
The station, owned by Brooke Communications, played 48 straight hours of that song beginning the morning of June 2.

It was all a setup for the debut of SAM FM, according to a press release, which has replaced the format of KISS FM on stations 104.5 in the Roseburg area and 104.3 in South Douglas County.

SAM plays pop and rock songs from the last 30 years, featuring artists from The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd to Kelly Clarkson and Kid Rock.

The “all Sammy, all the time” stunt delivered the desired effect. It got people curious and had the station’s phone lines “ringing off the hook.”

“But, secretly, BCI staffers hope to never play ‘The Candyman’ ever, ever, ever again,” according to the Brooke Communications release.

Nice job Kyle.
I know Pat didn't come up with this one, he likes "the candyman" too much! haha
Steve, maybe we should resurrect the old morning show and head south, gotta find Tanis.

I'll never get over the multiple, overarching ironies that tune has acquired in my mind. It epitomizes our naive, anxious yearning to step out of the tumult and tragedies of the sixties, only to be blindsided by further political, economic, and social tilts which sent us tumbling into the abyss of the seventies.

As it persisted into the following decade (the era of Reaganomics and cocaine), the recording morphed from goofily trite into hauntingly grotesque.

But what an amazing guy Sammy was. It's good that he's remembered, even if for a piece that embarrassed him, and I have such mixed feelings about. I suppose no icon can be separated from any time when they happened to stand at the fulcrum.

SAM has taken off nicely...for those up north, its similiar to BOB or CHARLIE. - A big mix of music.... 80s, 90s, 2000's, new stuff, and the occassional older song.

This was a very smart move for Brooke Communications. "SAM" is a very well-programmed satellite-fed Adult Hits format. This will certainly perform much better than the very poorly programmed "Kiss".

104.3 KKMX "SAM" is streaming online at: http://bdcast-brookecomm-kkmx-fm.wm.llnwd.net/bdcast_brookecomm_kkmx-fm

Well, my posts do get deep with something. "Candyman" brought back such a rush of dusty memories I got carried away.

Well, to get back on topic, I guess I could mention that fall I was *in* Roseburg, hanging around KYES, edit/dubbing student-recorded interview cassettes to their sole production recorder (a Maggie), and graciously entertained by Bruce as he spun platters, rolled cigarettes, and watched the cars go by.

Julie Nixon made a campaign stop (complete with parade), and the school paper sent me. It was just after the Watergate break-in (which few had noticed yet) and I stood there dumbstruck, making her guards nervous. (I should have asked, Why the heck are you making all this hoopla in this tiny burg?) She took my notepad and gave me an autograph.

Oh, there I go again.

much better! Mindless memories. That's what we want to read. No more of this deep philosophical
stuff... So, who was the coolest celebrity you've met and do you think the Archies will ever get back together?

I think Richie Rich is their tour sponsor.
He and Gloria were off to the side of the stage, and she was go-go dancing...

SAM is Simply About Music. So, why is KKMX still running the Kidd Kraddick morning talk show??? That's really going to hurt the station's success.

Who's the engineer at Brooke Communications? There's no excuse for having one-channel mono internet streams! Both the LEFT and RIGHT channels need to plugged in! I heard a Beatles song on the KKMX stream...and half the song was missing, which sounded terrible.
