LaGrande is probably one of the smallest cities in Oregon with radio signals. It is also very isolated with most residents willing to make the two hour drive to the bright lights of the Tri-Cities, Washington to shop. I understand the I-84 Denny's is THE place to dine, however the local McDonalds now has two, yes TWO drive-thru bays for greater efficiency. With that having been said, beautiful country!

"Can a guy make 52k per year in LaGrande?" I'm thinking the McDonald's franchisee might be making that too.

I'm thinking that if LaGrande were that small a town, it wouldn't even have a McDonalds. McDonalds used to require significant population in an area before having a restaurant located there. I don't know if this is still true or not but it took Lincoln City quite awhile to reach that pinnacle. Smaller towns usually have a Dairy Queen instead.

The McDonalds in LaGrande is new. They tore the old one down earlier this year and built a new one. The problem with Denny's in La Grande is that the inside is stale from all the cigarette smoke filtering through there. Richie (Pizza in Island City) must make the good money...driving around town in his Hummer to impress the girls when he makes deposits at the bank in LaGrande. Their library is fairly new and nice. The city's Burger King is in a small gas station. Their WalMart has been expanded. They have a decent Taco Bell AND Taco Time. And, their Dairy Queen gives senior discounts AND their prices are lower than in Portland. AM stations sound bad.....simulcast with Baker stations. But you can get KPAM and KEX there. But you can still stop at that place about 6 miles out of Island city that gives free ice and has great beef/pepperoni sticks. Decent country station on FM. I don't have to go there anymore. My daughter moved back to Portland last Fall.

"Doesn't one of the nearby towns have a very young mayor?" Yes, Union which is southeast of La Grande. Union's mayor, Kyle Corbin, was 18 when elected last fall by a write-in vote. I think it was OPB that did a pretty interesting documentary about Union and Union County sometime last year before the election. They covered the local politics. I had an aunt and uncle who lived there and we always stopped to visit during our elk hunting trip. The old Hot Lake Springs resort, between La Grande and Union, is being renovated. It was once a destination stop and has quite a history. It was also featured on The World's Scariest Places.

I used to work for one of the La Grande "clusters". Can only imagine which one it is. Imbler Market, which is on the way to Enterprise, has those tasty pepperoni sticks.

>>>The problem with Denny's in La Grande is that the inside is stale from all the cigarette smoke filtering through there<<< YES! On my most recent trip through LaGrande, I asked for non-smoking at Denny's, and my eggs still smelled like a 1940's Edward R. Murrow studio set! As for McDonalds, it only exists because a major Interstate runs nearby (I-84). After three hours of nothingness between Boise and LaGrande, a quarter-pounder meal is mighty appetizing. However, the DQ is right next door, and for a couple of dollars more, a much better choice. (OMG), I've been through this stretch too many times! Just be certain you get back on the 84 as quickly as possible, or flashbacks of "Deliverance" may set in.

I hear Richie also has a place in Vancouver. I was informed yesterday that the McDonalds has two windows on its drive-thru.... an order window and a pickup window....They've come into the modern age. Of course, there is Foley's station, the InandOut, and that Chinese buffet that lets you get all the hard pack ice cream you want.... from about 8 different flavors in tubs. Kids don't trick or treat in the neighborhoods. They go downtown and trick or treat through all the merchants on the main drag. It is the biggest thing going on all year. You are correct... It is in Imbler at that little store on the corner on the right that you get those Pepperoni sticks. They told me they get them from a Pendleton. Don't know where, though. They are good and spicy. John Day is smaller than LaGrande and I am told they have a McDonalds. I think there are only two radio clusters in LaGrande.

While we are discussing food in La Grande, go to El Erradaro for fine mexican cuisine. It is in Island City just east of La Grande past the Wal Mart. Is the posting from Pacific Empire or Capps. Those are the two radio companies that handle both La Grande and Baker City. I used to work for one and have knowledge of the other.

The tiny town of Biggs also has a McDonald's. I often stop in Biggs (for gas) on the way to the Tri-Cities, Spokane, Boise, etc.

I think McDonald's, as they've grown, have adjusted their population requirement. When I was growing up in Astoria the word was the Mickey D's wouldn't locate a restaurant in a town of fewer than 25,000 people. So Longview had one and we didn't. But Astoria's had a McDonald's since the 80's and the population is still a bit below 10, 000. Oh, and since they advertise on radio....this is a radio-related post. Right?

May I also suggest hitting up Nells 'N Out for one of their awesome drinks while traveling through La Grande. It's on the main drag just after the turn to go to Island City.
