No, it's not another homosexual thread.

Assuming things go relatively planned, I plan on being buried in a casket. I go back and forth on cremation. I don't know why it spooks me - it makes no sense. But I can't help it.

Costco sells caskets.

For me it's cremation. Why take up the space?I will have donated any good organs and I'm pretty sure I won't need this body later.I also don't want anyone mourning or remembering me at my urn. That to me is creepy. So,I want my ashes spread although I don't know where. If someone wants to remember me pull out some old photos and have a good laugh.

Why burn up a body that could be put to good use? We had a thread previously on this board where we discussed some real, though in some cases unusual, uses for cadavers and body parts:

1) Organs or tissues used in surgical procedures (organ transplants, tissue grafts, etc)
2) Cadaver dissected by medical students for educational purposes
3) Cadaver or organs plastinated for museum exhibits
4) Cadaver used as a dummy in vehicle safety tests
5) Gold from dental work pulled and recycled

Okay Alfredo, I'm okay with all that for me except 3. Then cremate. THEN spread on the voter cards...

Got any plans for your body??

Well, Id like a penis implant, bigger calf muscles and a washboard stomach. Id also like a smaller nose and maybe some body hair removed. I feel like I have body hair in all the wrong places, and Im lacking body hair on all the right places.

Oh My bad, I guess I misunderstood the topic. Continue on with this morbid topic. Im off to get a photo facial.
Later

I plan to let the bio-scientists do whatever they feel might be worth doing, then my survivors can tap the fund I will have put in place to cremate & have a nice party celebrating the good times had by all.

That's it.

My mom will be cremated. Once for fun we did a word search of her maiden name (unusual and uniquely spelled). In a worldwide search of locations, all we found was a lake on the west coast of Austraila that bears the same name. She told me with a straight face that she would like me to travel there after she dies to spread her ashes. Kind of a cool way for me to honor her, and a neat way for her to buy me a trip to Australia posthumously.

Save the money. Crispy fry me cheapest way possible and take the money and have a kegger! I don't want a bunch of people crying bout me I would rather have a lot of people getting drunk and remembering the good times. Party on Dudes and Dudette's!

OH.....and everyone has to take two shots of Cabo Wabo tequila at my last party because last is my last wish! Get drunk, have a good time, and enjoy your life as long as you can!

When I saw the title of this thread, I assumed it was a reference to the upcoming Dutch reality TV show where a dying woman will choose one of three potential donors to receive one of her kidneys.

NPR carried a BBC report on this story today - very interesting stuff! Sounds made up almost.

I plan to be cremated after donating any usable organs to those who could use 'em. I'm thinking about donating my body to a medical school instead, though. However, God willing, I'll be able to use my body for my own purposes for the foreseeable future.

To quote Mr. Prine;

Please don't bury me
Down in that cold cold ground
No, I'd druther have "em" cut me up
And pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane
And the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
If they don't mind the size
Give my stomach to Milwaukee
If they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box
Just get "em" out of here
Venus de Milo can have my arms
Look out! I've got your nose
Sell my heart to the junkman
And give my love to Rose

Give my feet to the footloose
Careless, fancy free
Give my knees to the needy
Don't pull that stuff on me
Hand me down my walking cane
It's a sin to tell a lie
Send my mouth way down south
And kiss my ass goodbye

Why not just be buried in your backyard?

It's a fun surprise to anyone who buys your house next.

Honestly though adding to Alfredo, having a body in the ground is even better than cremation. Your body decomposes naturally, nutrients are fed back into the ground. Honestly I wish we stopped using caskets and quit making such a fuss over a headstone.

Cremation pollutes.

I'm going to see if I can get a ticket for June 16. From looking at the Spiegel photos, it looks like this exhibit is more on the curiously interesting side than the disgusting side. I think that the main reason for this is because the cadavers are not messy, since all of the water has been replaced with plastic. The promotional photos give the impression that BodyWorlds exhibits teeter on the line between scientific educational value and art. I am really curious how the exhibit communicates to visitors what they are viewing; is the exhibit able to give visitors an appreciation for the structure and function of bodily organs and systems without being too technical for the layperson?

I really believe this subject derives from how your parents handled the subject. Religion aside, if your parents want to be (or were cremated), there is a strong likelihood you will want the same. One of those hereditary issues, that really has nothing to do with hereditary, but somehow ends up there anyway! Can someone prove me wrong here?

Now, Don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

Who want's to be buried in this soggy-ass Portland ground! Think of it....worms and critters lunching on your brains and stuff! Why spend $5,000 plus on a casket and then buy property so they can bury you in it instead of 50 bucks on a small clay pot for your ashes which will be later "Dust in the Wind"!

I saw Body Worlds on Saturday. I thought that the exhibit was well worth the price of admission and recommend it to anyone with an interest in science and the human body. Body Worlds does not have as much of a "gross-out" factor as I would have anticipated, and I think that the reason for that is that the specimens are not messy.

The only caution that I would like to put forth is that the genitalia are clearly visible on all of the cadavers, and all of the female cadavers have the mammary glands still in place. There is even a display case exhibit that shows the male and female urinary and reproductive tracts. People who might be offended by this should not go to the exhibit; likewise, young people not mature enough to see this type of content should not be taken to Body Worlds.

The Body Worlds exhibit is made up of three components:

1) Full body plastinates of humans and animals (Body Worlds 3 has plastinates of an adult and a baby camel).

2) Specimens of individual organs, either plastinated, preserved in fluid, or sliced and encased in plastic panels.

3) Posters and photographs that explain the history of anatomical study and the evolution of various technologies for the preservation of biological specimens.

Looking at the exhibit, it became apparent to me that the people who designed it wanted it to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. For children and people without too much curiosity about anatomy, the full-body platinates easily satisfy the "gee whiz" factor. The organ displays, especially some of the extra information available concerning these specimens in the audio guides, and the posters tended to appeal more to viewers desiring a more technical experience.

In my opinion, the full-body plastinates did have scientific value in giving a macro overview of the structure of the body. One of them, entitled "The Orthopedic Woman" was particularly interesting in that it featured a cadaver with a prosthetic knee and metal rods in one arm. However, the marketing behind the exhibit and press coverage seem to give people who haven't seen the exhibit the erroneous impression that Body Worlds is simply a collection of preserved cadavers presented without a scientific context. I think that this why some are criticizing the exhibit as "undignified" or "unscientific."
