getting this e-mail? This from another forum. Thought it would spark some good discussion. Would you send your child to school tomorrow if you were me? May 22, 2007 Dear Families: I am writing to inform you of graffiti found in the community (not within the school itself) that is threatening in nature to School. The credibility of this graffiti is questionable. The Police Department was notified and, together, we are not publishing the content of the graffiti at this time to assist in the investigation. We take all threatening messages, whether verbal or written, seriously. We address these types of situations on an individual basis and are taking appropriate steps under the guidance of law enforcement officials to provide a safe learning environment for all District students. We encourage you to talk with your children about the seriousness of these types of messages. Those responsible for these disruptive messages will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and be subject to strict school disciplinary consequences. School will be thoroughly searched by law enforcement officials. We are taking all necessary steps to insure students’ safety as they attend school tomorrow, Wednesday, May 23. District administrators and local law enforcement will have a heightened level of security in place. Please direct inquiries to the following monitored email account: Sincerely, Superintendent of Schools

Sounds like a bomb threat! I don't really give a crap about terrorist's winning but I would care if a pipe bomb went off when my child opened their locker and blew themselves and others to pieces so I would not send them to school. It's not about terrorist's winning or losing, it's about your childs safety....big difference! When it comes to my kid's safety I would always favor caution over any other choice! IMHO

You have to take all threats seriously, but you cant let them run your life.

For me.....I would go.....but for my kids I would cave and not send them. Sorry but My Kids are....well....my kids. I am protective of them with these types of things. A parent should never live longer than their children!

DT, you have to weigh the odds. When is the last time a bomb/attack threat produced a real bomb/attack? Now, when is the last time a *real* attack (Virginia Tech, Columbine, Thurston, Springwater Trail) was preceded by such a threat? Statistically your child is safer attending school after a threat than on a regular school day. Plus, if the school thought there was any real credence to the threat, they would shut down the school. Trust their judgement and send your kid (and don't let the terrorists win).

999 times out of 1000 you'd probably be right. But are you willing to take that 1 chance with your own kids? If so then I guess I can appreciate that but my gut says to error on the side of caution these days! When it comes to these types of things there really is no wrong side to it....just different views! Cheers!

DT, my point is that 1/1000 (more like 1/1,000,000) chance exists whether there is a threat or not, so because that danger exists every day you would never send your student to school? Your student is not at statistically higher risk on a "threat" day. What you are actually protecting is your conscience in such a situation. But that's okay...the school is doing the same thing when they close the school "just in case" - they are legally required to err on the side of caution.
