This program is something I recently downloaded so apologies for those who already know about it. WinAmp Pro! What a great program for managing music! $19.95 for the Pro version and money well spent! I went with the pro over the free version as it rip's CD's at 48x and is the only version that supports ripping CD's to MP3 format. I was experimenting with a bolt-on called Winamp Remote made by Orb for Winamp. Got it working and it is way cool! I can access my music from any PC or web-enabled cell phone through a web browser! Just login and "Shazam" there is my music. Another thing of interest is that I can build a playlist within that and share that playlist to others. Just enter their email address and it sends them the link to access the music! This is not the easiest to get working and being in the IT biz was a big plus. You have to open ports through the router and also make sure to configure any firewall programs on your PC correctly in order for it to work but once done it works easily. There is another bolt-on from Shoutcast that will let you stream and be an internet radio DJ! Not going to do that one though! Anywho....just thought i'd share that and maybe for longtime users they may not be aware about that new bolt-on remote program!

Cheers

Strange....I thought for sure this would be of interest....is it that this is old news and nobody cares? I am not very current on these types of things but this is really cool. Very simple access to my music from anywhere!

Cheers!

It's old news to me at least. Been a winamp user since 1.x! It's great software with few worries. Enjoy it!

Winamp, developed by the same guys who made ICQ, and later sold out to AOL.

I've been using it for about a decade, but I've never upgraded to the pay version.

Yeah, I've used some version of WinAmp many times but never the pay version. I don't do enough with music to make it worthwhile.

The pay version was the only one that said it ripped to MP3 so that's what I bought. I love the remote share bolt-on. From any web browser I can access and play my music!

I've not used that, but I've friends that do. Great feature.

Personally, I prefer to just have my music stored on open formats. I then move it where I want it, or just access it over the internet, via shared directory password protected, ssh, etc...

I like to keep software dependancies as low as is possible. If an OS will do the job, I generally let it, but that's just me --and it's why I really like UNIXes in general. It's easier to ask for a lot of things without having to purchase, learn software.

In any case, Winamp is great stuff. For your MP3 rips, consider installing LAME. It's far and away the best codec. You will hear the difference on most mp3's you build from CD's.

I have Winamp (playing from my iTunes library) on an old notebook PC up in my office pretty much 24/7.

I have it connected to a Creative USB soundcard.

From there it goes to my C. Crane FM transmitter.

I can use it all over the house, garage, deck, while mowing the lawn etc..

The reason I like Winamp for this is because Sqrsoft makes the best crossfade plugin I've found.

Also, I like the Winamp library system better than iTunes or Media player.

Hey, you should try using the media library and the online video channels.

It's nice to watch reruns of Seinfeld and that late at night when nothing is on that I want.

A little trick, Saltwaterchimp (SWC), the group who puts out some of those reruns gives preference to paying customers then to free ones last. To fix it so I can watch for free I simply set my connection to repeat, so if for some reason the server is busy it constantly will ping until it opens.
