Keeping jazz on the air does not always go smoothly:

"KMHD was thrown off the air Saturday morning 5/12/2007 at 9:30 AM due to a power outage in the area of Mt. Hood Community College where our studios are located. We returned to our back-up music system located at our transmitter site at around 1:30 PM. We returned to full control and studio generated programming at around 2:30 PM.

We regret the loss of the signal and service to our listening community. One of the many phone callers into the air room, however, noted that we should just say....."You never know what you've got, 'til its gone....."

We are sorry for the interruption to service. We are working on a new location that includes emergency generator back-up power. As we raise the funding to make the move, we will keep you posted on our progress.

Doug Sweet, Station Manager"

I also enjoy KMHD. I'm glad to hear it was just a crazy Saturday with a future solution. I bet a few folks sleep well tonight.

Smooth jazz and KMHD have next to nothing in common.

Believe me, I know the difference. Anything that resembles a hospital or a mall does not belong on my radio. These are not the glory days of Lionel Hampton pumped into the cafeteria at Newberry's.

Didn't k103 have a sunday morning jazz program a few months back?? Apparently it didn't go over very well because it is gone.
I'm sure it wasn't real jazz, it was probably that kenny G CRAP that 105.9 plays, AWFUL!!!!!

Ironically the smooth jazz station in Coos Bay has the frequency of 105.9. However since the station is locally owned we can serve up some local cooking.

Saturday mornings we have a program that plays Lionel Hampton, Dizzy, Frank, Tony B, Glenn Miller and others. Plus the younger crooners like Michael Buble', and Harry Connick Jr.

We're 4 adult formats in one. About 70 percent smooth jazz and the rest is classic R&B, adult contemporary, and some oldies. Seems to be working since we've been on the air 6 plus years.

And yes Beano we play Kenny G's crap. I always thought he was best when he played in Jeff Lorber's fusion band. They were as loud as any rock concert I have ever heard.

K103 began airing Smooth Jazz before 105.9 flipped to the format. I believe it was a test by Clear Channel to see if there was enough interest before committing one of their stations to a full format.

Semoochie is correct! Smooth Jazz is just the softest AC format you can get these days.

I never thought that I'd say this, but bring back the "beautiful music" format, at least it was relaxing.

A reference to our old friend Wayne. So I think we've solved the puzzle finally. Based on the title of this thread,

I like smooth Jazz and I cannot lie
You music lovers can't deny
When a piano chimes in with a jazzy song
and a saxophone comes along
Baby, that's class

I know for a fact that the Eastport Plaza Post Office does not tolerate Clear Channel properties.
Too many commercials and too much talking was the perception. Did I really talk that much?

Steve, is that the "smooth jazz" version of Sir Mix-A-Lot's classic?

I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung, wanna pull out your tough
'Cause you notice that butt was stuffed...

I believe that Wayne and Reinstatepete both were victims of the message board grim reaper! :-)

Somebody (Terry Danner?) once made the comment that Smooth Jazz is (or evolved into) a soft R&B format. The listenership demorgraphics of the format today are therefore somewhat different than what the creators of the format had in mind back in the mid 1990s, and the power ratio for this format is not that good.

Looking at the big picture, I am really intrigued by the paradox of research in radio programming. There is a vocal group that complains about what research has done to music radio programming. However, the general public seems to accept and even embrace heavily researched music formats. Interviews with Lee Abrams after he went to XM Radio are particularly interesting: in some interviews (mainly those meant for a non-industry readership), Abrams tries to give the impression that he is "repenting" for what his research did to FM radio in the late 1970s. However, in one interview, he pointed out a chart on his office wall that mapped every XM music channel on two axes: listener age and listener sophistication. He was almost boasting to the reporter that the music channels on XM radio had been fine tuned so that each fit a distinct area of this model. I can't remember the respective publications in which these interviews appeared, but you will see links to them if you type "Lee Abrams" into Google.

KWJZ here in Seattle and Tacoma seems to be a favorite at my medic's. For my money it's KPLU for jazz, blues ect. No KG there. In the early 80s there was a commercial jazz stn in Vancouver BC CJAZ 92.1. It folded and later moved to 96.9 became AC and quite sometime later became Jack fm. I forget the call letters CKLG FM? Jack fm in VAN. was good but missed jazz on 92.1 good sig in Seattle then. CBC is on 92.1,,,,,,,,,,,Chris, I too saw Jeff Lorber Fussion. I liked them too only wished I had cotton for my ears very loud at Seattle Opera House. FWIW, introduced on stage by Jim Wilke who did a jazz program on KING FM at the time.

96.9 was CKKS, "97 Kiss FM" during it's AC days. They did a 2 hour nightly fusion/smooth jazz show, which for a time was simulcast on AM 760 from some outlying town in B.C.

Thanks Randy now I remember. I don't recall the stn on 760 though but I do recall 97 KISS fm. For just a short time CJAZ was on 96.9 prior to the switch. I might add CJAZ was similcasting on both 92.1 and 96.9 for a short while. Transmitter Salt Spring Island. The overnite jock was Dale Bonderant very hip knew the music deep voice a good music mix.He told me he worked in Detroit then Portland his better half from BC. He later went to KPLU when the stn went from classical to jAZZ in 83. Dale isn't there now. Id call him at CJAZ often. CJAZ had a news show like NPR'S ATC called Word Jazz. Over all I was quite a fan of the station.

I think that 105.9 plays some strange tunes for it to be considered "smooth jazz."

Db-

The Coos Bay station is really 4 adult formats in one. 70 percent smooth jazz with the rest of the format made up of AC, oldies, and classic R&B.

We don't call ourselves a smooth jazz station but "The Wave". Ties in nicely with the coast.

No "Smooth Jazz" station has never claimed to be PURE jazz. Most will tell you that they play SMOOTH r&b and Contemporary JAZZ.

This sounds like a pretty accurate description of the KIJZ format, as well. The format is intended to be a background sound that, even though it many not be everyone's cup of tea, won't be too driving or grating to anyone (unlike if you were to have "active rock" or CHR playing in the background).
