What the heck is this? I suppose you did it just to get people to look and draw attention to yourself. Mission accomplished.

51 and single? No surprise there.

Actually, KLYC's playlist is pretty cool if you like '70's hits.

I heard a live remote the other day with Larry & Stella broadcasting from an auto parts store. Guys, love it or hate it, KLYC is real Radio. Daytimes it isn't automated and except for a few silly "Ruby Red" health powder commercials, they are at least making a go of it.

So admit it. The homogeneous radio mileu that has taken over our airwaves makes KLYC's home-grown approach, along with things like Eve's perky on-air personae, a refreshing change.

Okay, Vgis.

As a long time KLYC 'homer' I'm open to hear you out. Give us your best shot how to make KLYC economically viable and compete with the Portland Radio umbrella covering McMinnville and that surrounding area.

I'd be curious if you'd automate, how close to minimum wage you'd pay employees, what the format might be, and if you'd pull an air shift yourself.

Go for it.

Not a big KLYC fan here, but I'm (gulp) with Herb on this one.

Please, Vgis, impart your programming and economic wisdoms. If you're as good as you claim to be, you've just saved a 1KW daytimer from the certain doom that most other mom & pop radio operations have experienced in the last decade.

And feel free to cite your other programming highlights in the business.

I haven't yet listened to "macradiofm," Internet radio station being advertised here and in previous threads. However, I am assuming that it is an automated Live365 music jukebox station without any live programming, voice tracking, or any type of reports such as news, weather, business, etc. If that is the case, is it really better than listening to the real KLYC or Charlie FM? In other words, is it really that different than what broadcast radio has to offer today?

My music playlist changes daily.
I mix 50's to 80's top 40, and rock with classic country, novelty songs by Wierd Al, and others.
No way would over the air radio play what i play!
I have pro station id's and voice track, plus Live 365 ads announcements and commercials.
You can read the news for me daily and i will upload it! Mp3 format only!

Vgis, great ideas I'm sure, but you lost me with voicetracking.

No way that can replace a live announcer around here talking about the falling snow, or as in Eve's case this morning, her brush with greatness with an NFL player.

Your views and mine are like a song played on KLYC by Dave Mason that explains, "...there ain't no good guy, there ain't no bad guy...there's only you and me and we just disagree..."

Visit my Canadian friends site. His vision is what i would like to do for "macradiofm" if i had the money:
http://www.lg73.com
They do live shows daily from all over the globe!
Phil Kushnir that started the stream, now ownes http://www.ckns.fm/
and many of the shows they do live from Canada are also simulcast over Ckns.
See, Phil started with a "Local" internet stream, does different shows and genre's daily and now ownes a full power fm.
Two shows i listen to are Ramoana on Thursday Evenings live from Florida and "BigFry's Big Hits" live from Chicago.
We are also interactive in the Live 365 irc chat room. We comment about the shows and request songs and have a good time.
What Phil does with lg73 is what i wish we could do on a local fm station here in NW Oregon!

What I particularly like about KLYC's playlist is that they go pretty deep...beyond top 40 to occasionally the top 100. It sure helps alleviate the burnout from other stations that play the same songs over and over.

I agree, this is a good thread. Let's keep it. And Vgis, I think your programming idea would work for listeners having little interest in the local and live approach. For those primarily interested in your format, you probably would snag quite a few listeners.

But with all due respect to your programming prowess, I think it would be sad to lose yet another local station that becomes remote-programmed. Just my opinion. I am, after all, a KLYC 'homer.'

Hmmm. I don't know why Mr. Vgis does that? He comes into this forum often, creates a new username, touts his internet station, then vanishes with his username. Interesting to see his litany of complaints about KLYC. Yet when Herb asks him for concrete ideas on how they could improve, nothing is offered. Strange... Obsessive/compulsive disorder, I guess.

I like some of his ideas and links about internet radio, however.

...by disqualification?

Since this is a radio board, let's try a little back-masking strategy to unravel this riddle.

Darsap spelled backwards is pasrad.

Maybe Darsap is some kind of passive radiation, or pass-through radiation.

Or if it's performed by Crockett & Tubbs in Miami Vice, RADical PAStels...

Darsapping was a Mike Kolb invention. Here's how it happened.

In the early days after we took over KCYX (now KLYC), the audio equipment was so badly out of adjustment, with numerous mismatches, ill conceived lashups, etc., the music sounded terrible. It was so bad that Mike Colvin actually complained to Ford Motor Company that the radios they were putting in the cars were defective.

One day we discovered something in the recording chain that was badly messed up. When we corrected it, suddenly the music we carted sounded like going from 78s to digital. This was too much for Mike Kolb to let lie without doing a put-on with Craig, who was in charge of the music selection.

He concocts a major policy memo about the newly installed, and first in the Northwest, Digital Audio Recording Studio Audio Processor, DARSAP for short. He stated that from this day forward, all music on KCYX would be DARSAPPED.

Craig was slightly gullible in those younger days and bought it hook, line and sinker. Trouble was, we completely forgot about it and forgot to tell Craig it was a put-on.

And now, you know the rest of the story.

Yes, yes, yes.... "DARSAP" was an audio-massaging process culled deep from the bowels of an desperate desire to play yet another trick on a hapless but eager "Craig Foster" (now known and loved by all as "Craig Adams"!)

DARSAP is now revered as one of those things that just won't die a dignified death...

Herb,
There are no famous Yamhill County personalities.

Before my present job, I worked at a station on the Atlantic Coast side of Florida, that ran the Ruby Red infomercials, along with others. Whatever company that is that markets those things, they actually pay stations pretty good money to air them. I will agree that they're bad radio, but for small market stations, they're a good source of income.

And the biggest surpise with Eve would be Herb going a week without expressing his total and compassionate love for her.

Haven't there been a number of past and present Portland radio personalities have worked at KMCM/KCYX/KLYC at one time or another?

If anyone has a list of them, it would probably be Craig Adams.

"do they like popsiples"

Is that a question or a statement? Here at KKJC, we like popsicles! (the term "popsiple" sounds kind of suggestive... :-) )

I think that I am disqualifying myself as Djfrresh by returning to this topic! I believe that it was Roger who coined the term popsiple in response to Djfrresh's question about "gosple" music on the radio in Portland. Now, every time that i hear an ice cream truck, I think of Djfrresh.

My understanding is that Lou Gillette of KMCM was instrumental in breaking the McMinnville UFO story. He was among the first to speak with the Trents and that interview was quoted in the Oregonian on June 10, 1950. No surprise, the tale snowballed and appeared in newspapers across the country.

Craig, Steve...

Just to clarify my resume: I left KLYC in early January 1992 to do evenings at KRKT-FM.

I never worked at KEJO until Jacor bought the stations in 1999 or so and I was made PD of KEJO-AM, KLOO-AM along with KRKT (and some others...it's the way it's done in a small market corporate cluster!)

Steve, you were doing some PBP for KRKT-AM for a short time, right?

Brian Edwards, circa 1981.
Dee Dee Harrington, circa 1982.

After he left KCYX, Dick moved to the Oregon Coast to supposedly retire. At the time, he wasn't in the best of health.

To my knowledge, Tom Lockyear never worked in the Portland market. He was an intern for me at KEX in 1986 and then was part of the staff when I joined KCYX. A good, hard working guy. I'd like to know where he is these days.

Glenn mentioned Marty Lanser. Another great radio guy was great pipes that should have made it in Portland. He could have sued Mike Symons and KCYX for a ton when they let him go in 1989.

Tom Lockyear is now working at the Seattle Westin, I think in the public relations department there. He e-mailed me a few months ago when he was here with his wife and daughter for some kind of conference.

E.A. (Al) Schwartz is listed as an associate professor of history at Cal State San Marcos. This link shows a current photo, and it looks like him with less weight. http://www.csusm.edu/schwartz/

Paul Tilton e-mailed me recently as well. I have the info at work, but I think he's now with a family security consulting business, if I'm not mistaken, called Tilton Strategies or something like that.

Tod Butterfield became a born-again Christian in the late 1980s. He lives in Sheridan, Oregon, and has a Christian music video show on cable. Info and photo at www.jcvh1.com (guess what the "jc" stands for).

Steven Douglas Kenyon is his real name: It said so on his FCC Third Class Radiotelephone Operator's license. And he was one of the first people I met when I arrived in Oregon to attend Linfield College in 1979. We ended up being broadcast partners for the better part of a decade.

And may I nominate New York Times reporter and columnist Nicholas Kristof of famous people from Yamhill County (Yamhill to be exact). I interviewed him on KCYX when he was on his way to pick up a Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for his reporting on the Tiananmen Square massacre as NY Times Beijing bureau chief.

And Dick Sainte was a great guy.

Pat Helberg, moved to KVAL, KOIN-TV.
Paul Arca, moved to KASH-KSND.
Harry Girtman, moved to KROW.

Steve Kenyon lives in the Pendleton area, and among other things, does a great deal of rodeo announcing. His son Philip is active as a rodeo participant.

Marty Lanser went from KCYX to KOSO in Modesto, CA. I was President of a station group at that time that included KOSO, and we wanted to move Marty's excellent talent to that group. He was there a long time but I have lost track of where he is now.

Jeff Allen went from KCYX to Spokane. He later turned up in Cincinnati (or some place in Ohio), but it may have been out of radio. I'm not sure where he is now.

Mary Lanser was a true inspiration of accomplishment and doing so while being blind. He was a whiz in the recording studio and his audio levels were always right on the mark. He did it by ear, not by the meters. He could talk more pictorially than any of our sighted jocks.

I remember a prominent McMinnville person standing in the lobby of the station watching Marty on the air. He said "I just love to listen to him, he makes things so visual", then he said "why is he rocking back and forth while he's talking?" I explained that was how he kept his balance, that he was completely blind. I thought I was going to have to pick the guy up off the floor. He couldn't believe he could possibly be blind and at the same time be so exceptional on the air.

Marty was an adventurer. Our son Mike rigged two way radios in helmets so Marty could drive the dune buggies we had at the station. Marty got a great thrill out of running them full throttle. He was at KCYX when he wanted to go sky diving, so we arranged that. I often wonder if it would be more difficult for a blind person to make that first jump, or a sighted one.

Those were the fun days and we miss them, but as you can tell from this thread, there have been some very talented people through KCYX (and KMCM before it became KCYX.)

"He couldn't believe he could possibly be blind and at the same time be so exceptional on the air. "

Deane this is what makes radio the wonderful medium it is. Theatre of the mind. There are many talented jocks who have physical disabilities but because of their talent create a great emotional connection with the listener. It's the listener who decides what the jock looks like. Great stuff.

My wife worked with Marty in Wenatchee, WA and not only was she impressed with his talent, she was equally impressed with him as a human being.

Oh by the way Deane, I never did get a turn on the dune buggies in the field next to KCYX. Maybe Mike can put together a virtual dune buggie ride for me now.

But Chris, didn't you get a turn on one of Steve Kenyon's horses? He had two there at the radio station. We could have had galloping mock gunfights.

You have to agree, there was always something interesting going on around there.

Anyone remember Josh Fields? Jackie's son. Turned out to be a very sharp young man. When he was on duty on the weekends, it was one of the few times we could relax and know everything was getting attention and being handled. Don't know where he is now, I don't think he went any further in radio.

Deane- You couldn't pay me enough money to get on a horse. I am not the guy you want on a horse. Never have been and never will be. I'll attempt to pull this thread out of its nosedive and ask if anyone has heard the 'new guy' on KLYC.

Constructive comments? Suggestions?

Like Eve said, remember-He's apparently new. So maybe compare how he's holding up given his newby status.

Mike-How kind of you to ask. However, I'm a tad intimidated myself.

But if and when you do catch up with Eve, make sure to update us. Heck, that invite alone ought to make you feel honoured. After all, Eve is pulling some very long hours. Even if they're split shifts, her work ethic is amazing.

And while some here may deny it, I like to think that there are some closet 'KLYC homers' and more than a few Eve fans, along with yours truly, lurking in our midst. Thanks again, Mike.

You're pretty much right, Outsider. But there is that small percentage of groupies around radio to which I tend to disassociate myself as they kind of creep me out. For the record [pun intended] my appreciation for KLYC and Eve's terrific show are totally innocent and from great distance.

But you're right. I am a huge KLYC 'homer' and big Eve fan. She's got a great show and a terrific, up-beat personality.

Fun Facts about Eve Fuller:

Eve's niece Alicia Fuller served with the Oregon National Guard in Afghanistan.

Homeless people in McMinville start their day with Eve Fuller -- they like to hear the police report at 6:30 AM so they can find out if their friends got picked up the night before.

Unconfirmed sources say Eve was at KMVI in Hawaii in the early 90's. Stay tuned.

This ought to keep the troll drooling for a few days.

Herb-
We broadcasters keep those early air checks hidden away. We only bring them out when we want to feel better about ourselves when we have a bad day on the air.

And I will agree, certain radio groupies creep me out too, but thankfully it has only been a small group in my case. Most listeners are wonderful, decent people.

Yes! KLYC has a distinct sound that you won't hear anywhere else on the dial. Big loop antennas rule! I have a rooftop loop that I assembled with 4' fiberglass stakes (for the diagonal members) and a piece of PVC pipe (for the boom). It works like a champ. The reception on KLYC is really great.

I can't believe this thread continues, I was checking on Mark Marshall's condition, which doesn't sound good.
It's no big deal, I graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in December of 1987. While in school was a paid intern at KGMB TV, and worked for Danielle Tucker writing morning news for KQMQ. After graduation, moved to the Big Island and worked for KKON/KOAS 6pm to midnights...became the news director for KHBC TV in Hilo and stayed there for 9 months before moving on to KMVI on Maui. Was News Director there, and worked with "Da Local Boy" Paul Douglas for 3 years. When the General Manager who hired me retired, the new manager came in and fired me and Keali'i Reichel. For those of you who know anything about Hawaiian music, you know what Keali'i has been up to for the past 15 or so years.
Came home to McMinnville, worked with Steve Kenyon and Mark Marshall at KLYC for a couple of years, then Lars Ward...quit, got married, had Malia and went back to work in March of 2000....and have been doing the morning show since. I'm lucky, I may not make much, but then again I don't put in the hours that I used to and I certainly don't have to drive very far. It's a good fit for me.

I think you misunderstood my meaning Herb. "In just a few short years.." as in: you can find yourself early on in this business moving around a lot as you learn the ropes. It was never meant as a back-handed anything. I was simply stating the reality of the biz.

When reading Eve's on line resume it simply reminded me how quickly we can gain experience while only being in one place for less than 2 years. I was only at KCYX for 8 months but it served me well and I count it as one of my stars on my resume.

If it came off sounding awkward and lacking grace then I apologize but it was never meant to be anything more than respect to a fellow broadcaster. At least I hope Eve will take it that way.

Found this tonight while researching the KXL history. The Oregon Journal did a better write up on Ivan Smith's retirement:

June 5, 1980

Ivan Smith began in broadcasting in 1949 at KMCM McMinnville where he worked in sales, also a spot writer and board operator. Later becoming News Director and then Program Director. After a year with the Forest Service as a radioman, Smith returned to radio as a newscaster and disc jockey for KXL.

In 1954 he joined KPTV as News Director and in 1956 moved to the new KGW-TV as anchor of the 11:00pm "NightBeat" program and was Assistant News Director for KGW-TV. In 1962 Smith was named Associate Director and co-anchor of "NewsBeat". He spent 3 years as News Director of KREM-TV in Spokane, returning to KGW-TV in 1966 as News Producer. He has anchored the Noon edition of "News 8" since 1972.

Jim Maass reports: Kevin Young also worked for KMCM around 1978-79.

Also forgot to ask Jim if he used any other names on air, he sure did!

Jim Maass at KLIQ, KBZY, KMCM & KVAN 1550.
Captain Jim at KCYX.
Jim "The Big Ragu" Maass at KGW.
Jim Ryan at KARO & KAAR.

Jim goes on to tell me he was hired at KMCM by PD, Ron Romain in Fall 1978 to do 6pm-12am but was fired after a year for acting to much like a Top 40 DJ on an Adult Contemporary station. A lot of us coming out of broadcasting school around this time, were trying to sound like Ron Leonard.

Jim was re-hired by Ron Romain in January 1980 (KMCM now KCYX). They had changed there mind, wanting to try Top 40 at night for the kids. Jim became "Captain Jim" of "The Night-Flight to Midnight" 7-12. Jim said: I had one of the sales women record something like this as my opener "Welcome aboard the night-flight to midnight, I'm stewardess Jane, and now your Captain, Captain Jim!" It was ridiculous.

OK, but if that's the only criteria for a station, I'd say get an iPod and program the oldies yourself. My criteria for a good local radio station also looks for relevant community involvement, local news in a timely fashion and the ability to publicy question local government's decisions.

KLYC, sorry to say, has minimal community involvement, old news ripped right from the News-Register and it's interviews with local public officials are nothing more than happy pandering and softball questions... Wonderful PR junkets for the politicos, but it's all sugercoated press releases.

I know Herb's a KLYC supporter, but -as such- wouldn't a supporter WANT the station to be better at it's job?

Music? OK, but there's gotta be more than that to get a local listener's attention.

"Music? OK, but there's gotta be more than that to get a local listener's attention."

I've enumerated plenty about KLYC's strengths and been hammered mercilessly in the process.

I completely understand your desire to know more, but the more ham-fisted among us won't have it. They have their own agendas. Maybe it's because they're green with envy...and that gives us little more than 'green envy and ham.'

Perhaps it's because these 'sour grapes' now work, or previously worked, at a larger station. Maybe they just like to complain. But the bottom line remains that KLYC is live, non-corporate and locally-owned. That's a rarity. It's fine to complain about a station's music format, but KLYC is a viable signal serving the community with hard-working hosts. Those are the facts.

Maybe these cynics could actually do it better. But unless they actually put their capital at risk and do the heavy lifting, at the end of the day it's little more than whining. Rather than lighting their own candle, they choose to swear at the darkness.

Viva la KLYC.

I think we're actually on the same page, Herb. Just different ways of saying it, perhaps.

If I didn't care about the station there'd be no complaint from me... only indifference. The hard-working hosts need to be more in number and a little harder-hitting, but that can only come from the the top, and Larry doesn't seem to want to step up to that particular plate. So, for me, the aggrevation directed at KLYC comes from what it "could & should" be versus what it is now.

For now, the music is OK but (if the station is to eventually survive) there's got to be a more aggressive stance taken in terms of news and community involvement. If that ever happens, there's a better chance for the ad dollar$ to follow.

See you at 1260 on the AM dial!

You know, Mike, I think you make a great point. You're right about our being on the same page.

Since Larry is the Captain of the KLYC ship, it's true that it sinks or swims with him.

Larry could choose to beef up the on-air presence. To be quite frank, if he doesn't give the announcers some decent paid vacation, a raise, and maybe provide the on-air staff with more support and assist them in reaching their best potential, he may very well lose the good people he's already got. I hope he treats his people well, because that's a crucial element to any operation.

With Larry at the helm, KLYC has been taking on water for years.

Larry choose to "beef up the on-air prescence?" Paid vacation? Raise? More support? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Seriously Herb, those ARE things he should do. But you, I and the guys in the machine shop around the corner all know that will NEVER happen on his watch.

Lose the good people he's got? What good people? (Yes, I know, there's Eve. But other than her?)

KLYC has "swam" for years. It's likely never to again, until Larry sells.

I'm curious to know what you think are good examples of small market radio in 2007. As I travel around (mostly in Washington, Oregon and Arizona) most small-town radio sounds automated or satellite-fed. Are there places around like the old KCYX? And, since those small stations are where many of us got our first jobs in radio....are the small market jobs still out there?
