"Internet Radio Outpaces Satellite, HD Radio In Latest Bridge Study"

"Bridge says that HD Radio is the "most disappointing" media covered in their study, as consumer awareness grows but interest in it is slowing. When asked about HD Radio, respondents said they had "little or no interest at this time" as their top answer, followed by "don't see a need" and "not aware of its benefits." Bridge has also adjusted its predictions for HD Radio, expected no more than 500,000 users by the end of this year and just over a million at the start of 2009."

I guess, that VanDyke doesn't know that optimistically only 150,000 HD radios have been sold, minus returns !

"Serius-ly?" Or did you mean, Sirius-ly? :-)

There is a lot of fist-shaking-at-the-clouds on the Internet that I'm not going to add to it by doing my own fist-shaking over the fist-shaking. There is a lot invested finacially on the pro-HD side, and there is a lot of ego invested on both the pro and anti-HD side. That's life.

"Bridge Ratings: Sweat the cell phone and don't count on HD"

"In other words, Bridge says interest in HD radio is decreasing even as your station works hard to increase awareness. What can I possibly add to this honest and bleak picture that I haven't said before? My well-intended warnings about HD's "premature death" seem to be rearing their ugly heads almost two years later."

It occurred to me that in the near future, there will be more people on these boards that have actually heard HD Radio than not and posts like this will become few and far between. Incidentally, I just checked the Ibiquity site and noticed that 4 Spokane stations will soon be running HD1 and 2. It's starting to move into the smaller markets!

I just saw in radio world where JPR signed a deal with Harris to take 18 of their stations HD!

This means HD in Medford, Redding, Kfalls, Coos Bay, Eureka, etc.

and this from radio world:

"HD Radio supporters have said that multicast channels could be fertile ground for new format ideas. Now an HD2 multicast has turned into a main-channel format on a Clear Channel station in Dallas.
“Lone Star” is the new branding of KZPS(FM) at 92.5 MHz, described as a blend of outlaw country, southern rock and alternative country; it will mix music from the likes of ZZ Top, Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. It was developed by programmer Duane Doherty and, according to the station, was “road-tested” on HD2 for the past year. The old main channel format was classic rock.

“All we had on the HD2 channel was the music and the response was incredible,” said Doherty in the announcement. “In a sense, we’re recapturing the early days of FM - when your jock was a trusted guide through what was new and important.”

The move also garnered attention because the station says it will not air traditional commercials. “Sponsors” will get one to two minutes of integration in an hour “and will be treated as part of the fabric of the experience, not as an interruption,” the station said.

The cluster’s director of sales Kelly Kibler stated, “We’ll only have one airline, one telecommunications carrier, one beer, one musical instrument store.”

I apologize for being a bit anal here, but Doherty's earlier comment implies that the subchannel was automated, with no personalities. I don't think that the comparison to early 1970s FM DJs is appropriate.

More importantly, how do stations collect data about the listenership to their HD subchannels? Does Arbitron rate subchannel listenership, or do the stations have to collect this information on their own?

This is an interesting concept that seems reminiscent of the early days of television. With how much some people complain about commercials (especially those who claim that they defected to non-commercial radio because of their frustration with having to sit through long stopsets of commercials), this is probably an idea that is long overdue. The million dollar question is whether this concept will actually work with the advertisers.

Mrs_merkin,

Why, are you always so formal ? Are you one of those sexually-repressed librarian types ?

"Librarian type?"

Why, yes, How did you know?

Since you're new here, I'm sure that the rest of the gang, some of whom have actually met me, will just confirm your suspicions.

(I think I just seriously hurt something from laughing so hard, but with this tight girdle on, it's hard to tell.)

Seriously, you obviously haven't visited a (Portland) library lately have you?
