I'm sick of the arguing and fingerpointing about the carbon footprints of Sheryl Crow, Al Gore, et.al. What is being missed is that even though these people have every right to take up any cause that they wish, their activism doesn't make them experts in these fields. My advice is: * If you want to listen to music, listen to Sheryl Crow. * If you want to listen to political speaking, listen to Al Gore. * If you want information about world climate changes, go to professionally trained climatologists. That having been said, there's no way that an internationally famous musical act on the scale of Sheryl Crow could have a small carbon footprint. Let's face it, pop music fans want big, elaborate concerts. It takes a lot of equipment and people to put on these shows. Guess what, a lot of energy is required to ship all of this stuff and people from one city to another on a tour.

You are so right my friend. But here's another point, or question. Do celebrities have the right to have an opinion and speak out? I believe they do. And, many times, by virtue of thier high profile, they can bring issues to light that otherwise would be buried. I don't think many celebrities consider themselves "experts" in these fields. I think they are using thier celebrity (and many time thier money) to bring visibility and resources to issues that they feel are important. I don't have much problem with that at all.

You can be a celebrity and still get educated on what is important to you. Al Gore just didn't make this stuff up he researched for years. He needed some credible ground to stand upon and is now the conduit to the public about this troublesome issue.

I too think they should speak out. I like it when they do, because often it brings additional meaning and context to their works. Bringing others into the spotlight doesn't hurt either. IMHO, it's a perfectly fine check on corporations, also speaking loudly.

The celebrities have every right to their opinions and to speak out on issues, just as you and I have that right. My main point is that their being famous doesn't make their opinions more worthy than yours or mine; the fame just provides a convenient soapbox for the celebrities' views.

"unless they can demonstrate some additional competence" Two words, "Celebrity Jeopardy." If you've ever seen a celebrity week on Jeopardy, you know they get easier questions than even the contestants on kids week.

We need to bring back a version of Hollywood Squares that includes a "Soupy Sales Memorial Pie Cannon" and a dunk tank like the old Steve Allen show. It could be hosted by Don Rickles or The Greg Wilson. Anyone up for a Merv Griffin seance?
