What you hear here and what is most popular in Mexico are two different things. Treat Regional Mexican like you would country here. Not everyone listens to that. Some here like rock, AC etc. In Mexico especially Mexico City you will find some of the most loyal Rock fans on the Planet, whether its Progressive Rock, Alt Rock, Heavy Metal, you get the idea. you would be surprise what groups always have Mexico City on its tour route. Why mention Mexico City. The #1 station had a Cume of 4 million.. Thats right 4 million.

Alfredo,

Word will spread like wild fire in the Hispanic community, as far as "promoting," I've worked at Spanish station that in 1 book it went to #1, and there wasn't heavy promotion behind it. When there aren't too many options for one particular ethnic group - word travels fast.

But marketing will help their cause.

KWIP, KWBY, KGDD, and KXPD formats are Regional Mexican, KSZN is obvious as ESPN, KXMG is more like a Sp. AC station in that it mixes pop rock, older artists and sometimes an artist that you might find in the Regional Mexican genre. (the mix is not done very well). KMUZ is a Regional Mexican Oldies station and late at night its Canadian in some parts of the Portland metro(ha ha) Just thought I would let you incase you didn't know and if you did already then ignore post....

"KWIP, KWBY, KGDD, and KXPD formats are Regional Mexican,"...

Which region?

Why no regional Guatemalan or El Salvadoran? These immigrant populations shouldn't have to listen to Mexican music as their only source for hispanic music. Where are the Central American ownership groups?

Would a Spanish oldies station play Pat Boone's Speedy Gonzales?

Wishing everyone a very happy Cinco de Mayo

What is a Cinco and can I get it with mustard and horseradish rather than Mayo?

Which region? First of all unless your in LA, Houston or Miami, the Central AMerican population is never that large. Yes there are some everywhere but not enough unless your in the above markets to actually create a format that caters specifically to those who are from Central America. Secondly when they call it Regional Mexican its about different regions of the country. The types of music that fall in the genre are Banda, Norteno, Cumbias, Grupero, Corridos, and Durangense. Each are from an area of the country. check out the link below and then click music formats. Its pretty good about explaining to white bread America the Regional Mexican format. Last but not least, Cinco=Five, Cinco de Mayo, just a battle that happened against the French in Puebla Mexico where the French were defeated. And that was when the French flag was actually Red white, and Blue and not just White like it is today. It would be like celebrating the Battle of Bunker hill today here in the US......

i saw the El Rey vehicle this weekend (i assume for something to do with Cinco De Mayo), and it had 931elrey.com on the back bumper, which has no website, but does appear to be owned by Salem (via whois.net).

If they have a vehicle...who's driving it, someone from KPDQ or the Fish? Do they have any staff?

If they do have staff, i might be tempted to think the reports of selling are either outdated, way overblown or outright false.

"If they do have staff, i might be tempted to think the reports of selling are either outdated, way overblown or outright false." Do you honestly believe a company would not be selling just because they have a staff.....you must not have been in radio long. Everything is for sell. And Salem is not in the Spanish language business. Check their mission....Conservative talk, religious talk, Christian contemporary music. Spanish language, ok they have it in Seattle and here now but they aren't adverse to getting rid of them and make a few bucks....They have traded stations or sold stations in recent times to Hispanic broadcasters, Univision and Bustos....If they were wanting to get in the Spanish language market they would have done it in other markets too.

El Rey means "The King." A better translation of the slogan, "!EL REY 93.1...MI MUSICA ES LA LEY! " is the:
The King 93.1. My music is the law. (or my music rules)

Also, "Sintoniza El Rey KRYP" translates to: Tune in to The King KRYP.

Radio- If they have or do hire a staff, i see that as at least a short term commitment to make something work. Its far to easy to get syndicated jocks, a national format..etc...even among hispanic formats.....its too easy to do a music station on the cheap to earn value....even you must acknowledge THAT.

It just seems that there has been no info about a potential sale since BEFORE the flip...does anyone have any "current" info about El Rey? It's all speculation now isnt it?

Destineyoverun,

Well in the Spanish world you'll be surprise how much jocks will work for, plus from what I hear, the station is pretty focused playing the hits. Bustos programing is syndicated, and took for granted that there was no competition. From what I hear the consultant for the station is from Univison in Los Angeles, and let me tell you the folks at Univsion know what they are doing. So the best bet for this station is to stick with local talent...I always knew the first FM Spanish station in PDX would win! The Spanish format in Portland is going nowhere, as the population growns you'll see other Spanish formats in the market.

Yodaddy, Spanish is not a format.....Regional Mexican, Rock in spanish, Sports in Spanish (ESPN deportes) those are formats. But I understand what your trying to say. Though, if things had stayed the same, no changes into FM it still would be growing. As far as Bustos you are RIGHT on. They like being in markets where they didn't have to compete with strong competition. It will take awhile before other formats in Spanish can be viable in Portland....It is about the $ and revenues......

Was it the growth of the Spanish-speaking population that triggered the growth in Spanish broadcasting, or was it the arrival of Bustos? Before 1520 went Spanish, we had:

880 Regional Mexican
940 Variety
1360 (Weekend evenings) Variety
1230 Regional Mexican

Then, Bustos came to town and started the ball rolling on more niche-focused programming with the following:

1520 Regional Mexican
1150 Pop Love Songs (you could think of it as Spanish AC)
1230 Oldies

Today, the Spanish formats available are:

880 Regional Mexican
940 Variety
1010 Oldies
1040 Regional Mexican
1150 AC
1230 Sports Talk
1360 (Weekend evenings) Variety
1520 Regional Mexican

93.1 Regional Mexican

As far as the ratings go, it seems that in this area, the big numbers are in Regional Mexican, and that is just a function of the demographics of the Hispanic population here. In cities with big Cuban populations, the Spanish stations sound very different than what is popular here. From that standpoint, I think that the right choice was made in making 93.1 Regional Mexican as opposed to the any of the other formats: Regional Mexican has a proven track record here. Interestingly, nobody has ever tried a Spanish CHR format in this market; I wonder how that would have worked out on 93.1, given that the demographics of the Hispanic population here also tend to skew young.

So far, it looks like all you amateurs should leave the translations to those who really know, such as Alfredo_t.

I'm no expert but even my limited Spanish knew that what DrChaps said is not what he meant.

Reminds me of the days walking in Paris. If you did not say it exactly correct, they made fun of you, hated you, took you to the opposite side of town, etc. You were better off speaking English rather than trying to speak French incorrectly and ruining "their" language in front of them.

Does anybody remeber the sequence or--better yet--the dates when they acquired Bill Sizemore's stations (1010 & 1150), Z-media's (?) 1230, and Entercom's 1520? El Rey will begin "live programming" on Monday.
Actually they are going to be voice tracking. What a waste of a station.
Former KMUZ "La Zeta" PD Mirelle will be doing morning show VTs.

I will be on vacation for two weeks starting on Monday. Can anybody get some sound checks of "El Rey's" first VT's?

She got Kiked out of La X. She did some VTs there and apparently was no good.

Jay, I assume you intended to write "kicked" out as opposed to the "K-Word"?

Someday, they might convince KKNU to move to 93.5, which would allow 93.1 to upgrade.

If that were to happen, I believe they could be as high as a C0.

Why didn't they have KKNU move to 93.5, right from the start?

At the time, moving more than one frequency would require a major modification, which would bring everyone out of the woodwork. Don't be surprised to see it happen after everyone is licensed for their new facilities.
