Ever hear a song on the radio when you were a kid that got played OVER AND OVER, yet it NEVER GETS PLAYED on the radio today. Why is that??? Everyone remembers the song "danger Zone" By Kenny Loggins, it still gets played on the radio A LOT TODAY! But what ever happend to the song "Nobodys Fool" By Kenny Loggins from Caddy Shack Part 2. That was such a great song, even though the movie sucked, that was by far one of the greatest songs from Kenny Loggins, if not his only great song. It was played A LOT on the radio back in the late 80's yet you never hear it onn the radio today. How come??? Los Lobos had other hits besides Labamba, whatever happend to the song "Come on Lets go" By Los Lobos, that was a big song on Z100 back in the late 80's yet you only hear Labamba on the radio today. What are your favorite songs that were huge back in the day, yet you NEVER hear them on the radio today. Again here are mine, and these are the EXACT SONGS "Nobodys Fool" By Kenny Loggins "come on lets go" By Los Lobos. Im sure I can think of a lot more, but those are just a few off the top of my head.

I have yet to hear that song on the radio since the mid 80's, and I know FOR A FACT that it was a top 10 hit. Another song "I drove all night" By Cyndi Lauper. That song was huge on Z100 back in the late 80's and I have yet to hear it on the radio since then. These are some songs Charlie needs to play. Chet Atkins circa 1958 ''Boo-Boo Stick Beat'' ''Funky Bull'' Dyke&The Blazers circa mid60s. I heard it on XEPRS back then on Art Laboe's show. I was a big fan of Art's, playing lots of R&B with a mixed bag of stuff. Dedications a heavy Latino following. Also in El Paso it was Steve Crosno who, like Art played oldies called The Brown Sound tunes which were popular with the Latinos of the area. I guess wayback you had a lot of regional oldies Steve did oldies review shows bringing in artists to a dance hall. I recall him playing ''Angel Baby'', Rosy and the Orginals. Shil Rah by Fats Domino Beauweavel,Ready Willin' and Able to Rock &Roll all Night also by Fats the 3 of his which are my favorites. ''Talk to me by Sunny and the Sunglows'', a big one. One last oldie from me ''Forbidden City'' John Buck and the Blazers 59? Those Oldies but Goodies Remind me of You///Little Ceasar and the Romans 57? Love them oldies. Folks.

Hey Beano, According to Wikipedia "nobodys fool" By Kenny Loggins went to #8 on the US pop chart in 1988. While in NO WAy Im admitting that I am a Kenny Loggins fan, I think "return to pooh Corner stuff he did was CRAPOLA! BUT "Nobodys Fool" By Kenny Loggins was a great pop tune that does deserve airplay on the radio today!

According to Whitburn, the "Goonies" song did peak at #10, but that says nothing about it's relevance or mass appeal today. I'm guessing it wouldn't test well, if anyone even bothered. My favorite Raspberries tune is "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)," (#18), but as Roger suggested, that's what record players are for.

Now, we're getting down to my hot subjects on why we still need KISN, not that they played all those either. But, many of the tunes mentioned were from an era that is not covered by any station, currently. I have discovered that if I want to hear good "oldies", I just go to the Gresham Izzy's. I hear things there that I haven't heard in a long long time. Food isn't that great but the music is. Sometimes at Burgerville, also. "whatever happend to the song "Come on Lets go" By Los Lobos" Or, how about the original by Richie Valens? "playing ''Angel Baby'', Rosy and the Orginals" I just played my 45 (yes I still it) of that last week. "How about the 70's track "Pieces Of April"?" Three Dog Night. They had a lot of hits back then but it seems that most stations only know of "Joy To the World" and overplay that. I remember the day they reported that Elvis had died. We were at Cove Palisades and when we got up on the flats to come home, I turned the radio to 620-KGW (yes, they came in great during the day in the Madras area)and whoever was on mentioned that Elvis had died then proceeded to play "Till the World Ends" by Three Dog Night. I think that was their last hit, also. There were a lot of good songs from the past that don't get played. Seems most stations play only one or two songs by an artist and ignore the rest, figuring they have their "token" tunes by that artist. There were many regional hits in the Portland-Seattle markets that did not play anywhere else that don't show up in playlists, either. Don & the Goodtimes, The Wailers, and others for example. That is my biggest complaint about Charlie. They say the play everything.... but they don't. Not even close. False Advertising. "In the Still of the Night" "The Stroll", "Little Darlin", Roy Orbison besides "Pretty Woman"......

Forgot about Overnight Sensation AND Let's Pretend.... Guess so did a lot of programmers... add them and maybe you give Go All The Way a rest and help avoid BURN OUT. ...if I want to hear good "oldies", I just go to the Gresham Izzy's. and I go to the Grocery Store. They play a better mix than the local 200 song library, Oldies station. Oh, Today is Motown Monday on BIG 106.5 Looking forward to hearing the same 20 songs from Hitsville that they play EVERY Monday! I bet anything that KRXY in Olympia most likely plays all of these songs. I was on vacation a few years ago, and I heard Dan Bairds "I Love You Period" on KRXY. Perhaps the reason some of these never get played now is that they were so overplayed when they were in rotation that nobody (except a few diehard fans) ever want to hear that song again. That's how I feel about "Danger Zone" and pretty much any Huey Lewis single, for example. I'd really like to hear much more "deep cuts" and much fewer tired chart toppers... When KGON did their A-Z I enjoyed nearly every track, if not for actually liking it then for the nostalgia factor.

Paul, A huge omission in your list is Debbie Boons "You Light Up My Life" that broke the Billboard record for the longest stay at #1. What was it..11 weeks at #1? Now I'm trying to think who broke that record? Thats one song I don't need to hear...ever again.

The methodology changed around 1991 when they started keeping track of actual units sold and actual airplay. Before that, Elvis held the record for longest rock era #1 at 11 weeks with "Don't Be Cruel/Houndog". After the change, lengthy stays at the top became commonplace with Boyz II Men having the most success. The last time I checked, "One Sweet Day" was still the longest running at 16 weeks. If you go back to the 1940s or before, there were longer lasting #1 songs but then again, the methodology was different before the rock era.

Greg, point taken on Debbie Boone. I was trying to show some of the little more obscure, than the famous...although in retrospect, she became "infamous" for this song! Oh, and I was thinking of another one from the mid-70's today, wasn't a #1, but believe it was Top10, who can forget Paul Anka's "You're Having My Baby". It even references abortion in the 3rd verse, now that is pop music at its best!

Fantastic thread. To echo a sentiment that started it all, I think Los Lobos is completely underappreciated. Of course, that goes for quite a few great bands. While we are baring our souls. I love John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot. Now, put those rocks down. Here are two incredibly prolific fellows who get represented by mebbe a half dozen songs between them. There is never an excuse to burn out listeners when you can dig for gems. You do it for Stevie and Elton, so please, do it for these guys too. I have to fifth or sixth Herb on the Raspberries. I'm also with Craig on "Let's Pretend" as my favorite. I like all their tunes that sounded like Badfinger and Big Star, but not so much the stuff that sounded like backstage couch staining material. Eric Carmen, feed your famished eyes and go to bed. I am completely in agreement on the early Wings stuff, heck, I wish that the Beatles early solo work was combed deeper. Hit or not, there are very familiar and wonderful songs like "Backseat of My Car" by Paul or "Tomorrow" by Wings and John's "#9 Dream" or "Jealous Guy" and George's "Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp" or "Apple Scruffs" and Ringo's "I'm the Greatest" to name a few. Luckily, "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" -- my earliest favorite song -- is still in rotation, but other Dusty Springfield (and Jackie DeShannon too) has been sorely neglected. Since few truly talented women are willing to stoop to the depths that fame requires these days, the least we can do is unearth the other goodies from Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Carly Simon and Rita Coolidge. Along those same lines, Brian Wilson, Roy Orbison, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Pete Townshend and Ray & Dave Davies wrote more than two or three songs, no really, honest. It seems the least that radio can do is keep the talented big sellers alive, dig into what they have, and expose what was missed the first time. Do not bring back the Bay City Rollers. Save us all the agony and dig up "Rollers Show" from Nick Lowe instead. His three minutes and thirty seconds trumps their whole career. Speaking of pain, that goddamn "Undercover Angel" is stuck in my head now. Thanks for nothing. :0)

...I love John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot.... Darn, and Chris Beebe is out of radio, or you would hear them twice an hour! Yep, where is the WINGS Stuff? Helen Wheels, Girl's School, Juniors Farm... How about Carly Simon's Tired of Being Blonde..... As an aside, One song we tried to break in the mid 80s was a Beach Boys/Four Seasons tune entitled East Meets West... (about 20 years overdue) Never saw any more than the promo 45 and couldn't get the record distributor to send us another copy. The PD claimed it. Did the song ever make it onto an album or CD? would love a copy.... Undercover Angel Alan O'Day..#1 17 weeks I thought on the charts, not 17 weeks at #1..... As for the CUME KILLER list, depending on the format and how you presented the song you could find room for an occasional spin... Today's Song from hell sponsored by Bill's junk shop... Fun, lighthearted, and definite titles to keep the comments comming in. Call in with your worst hit of all time. A reverse battle of the bands weekend. pitting one bad hit against another played hourly . Winner stays around for another hour. Loser is banished forever! Oh that's right. No place for Fun radio anymore. Can I please hear Henry The VIII or Back In My Arms again rather than ANYTHING else by these respective groups? Thanks I knew you would. Now everybody up!!! roger sez: "where is the WINGS Stuff?" I think the overplaying of "Silly Love Songs" during its time on the charts pretty much killed off the love of Wings prematurely. That said, I think it might be okay now to dig up Band On The Run and play a few tracks from it. (seemoocie, craig, is K-hits playing it?)

Yes, I'll let Craig take that one too. ;0) "Shangri-La" & "Berkeley Mews" & "Death of a Clown" The Kinks (among many many songs) "7 and 7 Is" Love (that one charted, but any Love would be fantastic) "Master Jack" Four Jacks and a Jill (a ballsy hit from South Africa during apartheid) "Randy Scouse Git" & "The Porpoise Song" The Monkees (this band is a goldmine) "Live" The Merry Go Round (or any Emitt Rhodes!) "My World Fell Down" Sagittarius "Violets of Dawn" The Daily Flash "Sound Asleep" & "She's My Girl" The Turtles The Wailers and Sonics obviously deserve some spins, for chrissakes. At the very least, Mark -- or I should say his fine team -- ought to dig up something from his local peers every week and feature them on the show. Hint hint. Hey, Tim, Moonbabe -- I'm begging you here -- make it a tradition and drag some of these local legends down for a burger and a conversation. Hell, it probably is in the works, but I like the idea. Where is The Band? Okay, "Up On Cripple Creek" is cool, but when Joan Baez is singing a cover and it is the only other tune from these guys I ever hear, well, I wonder why. If you think ELO is really good, imagine what might happen if you dug up some of the huge British hits from the Move. Alright, I'll take a breath. I really love this thread. p.s. damn roger is funny wat yall think p.p.s. I've noticed James Brown creeping into the rotation, and for that I am very happy.

Emitt Rhodes sounds kind of like Paul McCartney when he first went solo. He played all the instruments on his first couple of albums, did all the vocals, etc. His band The Merry-Go-Round had a minor hit with "She's A Very Lovely Woman". The Monkees are on my IPOD with "Love Is Only Sleeping" and a couple of others. Thier album cuts were great.

I dont have exact numbers, but I would guess there are about 25 songs a year that make the #1 spot, and 250-300 that make the top 10. So a station like K-Hits that plays 60's-70's has to pick from about 500 songs that were number 1 at some time, plus another 5000 or so that were in the top 10. Then theres the other 10,000 or so that charted.

Roger, in complete seriousness, I love your posts. No sarcasm at all. I thought it was funny to post twice, since automation has given us the same song twice in an hour in this town and many others. I am a music geek, as well as someone who loves radio -- ssh.. Merkin ;0) Since both the father and son geniuses of the Buckley clan put out great records, how come dear old Dad isn't on the radio? Tim should be remembered just as fondly as Jeff. While I am mentioning totally underappreciated Tims, I'll toss Tim Hardin in the mix. "We Can Work It Out" Stevie Wonder (best Beatles cover of all-time) "I Wish It Would Rain" Temptations "Car Wash" Rose Royce (this soundtrack is stolen regularly by Hip-Hop) "I Want You" Marvin Gaye "Blue Bayou" Roy Orbison (obvious, but I don't hear it often) "Talkin' About the Good Times" & "Trust" Pretty Things "Care of Cell 44" Zombies "Ball of Fire" Tommy James "Strength of Strings" Gene Clark "Mr. Soul" Buffalo Springfield "Chestnut Mare" & "Get to You" Byrds "Superman" The Clique "One Monkey Don't Stop the Show" The Animals Damn, there is some good stuff here, boy, dust of the Bourgeois Tagg, Lirama, and while we are serving up pure evil, we must not forget 1910 Fruitgum Company. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who has Turtles and Monkees in his musical zoo. Warner, we gotta hang out soon. Perhaps we are all due for another round table? p.s. Nwokie, who is pretty much wrong about everything political, nailed the numbers game here. It would be very tough to run an Oldies format now. People want to hear the hits. Many of us geek types here want to play the "deeper cuts." Management wouldn't really go for that. What to do? BTW: Are there any Moby Grape fans here? How about "Omaha"? True rock & roll!

Roger, I caught some guff, but I played that Camper Van Beethoven song fairly regularly on KBPS -- when I was a student and Metzger's mob was running wild. This was during those glory days when our little station was the first to play Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" in Portland. Do any of you remember "Gold Nuggets" on 1450? It was a fantastic oldies and rarities show that Tim Underwood produced out of his own incredible collection with Kevin Flink providing the voice overs. It was a great, but sadly obscure chapter in Portland radio.

The problem with playing deep cuts is that most people don't like most of the songs! Even people who say they like that type of format won't sit through too many songs they don't like. It seems to me though that almost any big hit that isn't overwhelmingly dated or too much of a novelty could be played occasionally without the entire audience walking off.

The song I referred to was titled "No More Madonna" The key phrase is "PLAYED OCCASIONALLY" Give the overplayed songs a rest from time to time. Sure they are the favorites, but as a listener, when I can anticipate the next song based on the tease... "Chicago up next on burnt out 104", and I know it's going to be "Old Days" again, then the station has achieve listener fatigue. KBSG is/was great for that, so they lost me early on with a too small oldies play list. Same for WBBG, But WMJI, while staying cose to tried and true, still drifts into lesser remebered hits on ocassion, though less often since they have trimmed much of their LIVE staff.......

Okay, so here's an example of a waaay overplayed song on oldies stations that didn't deserve it, IMO. "Judy In Disguise (With Diamonds)- John Fred & The Playboy Band. KISN (the 97.1 version) played this constantly. It was a #1 (for 2 weeks), but for cryin' out loud! You don't have to play it 4 times a day. Besides, it sucked when it was first released. Okay, I feel better now.

Then, they redeem themselves for the John Fred tune by spinning the Raspberries, "Go All The Way" this very moment! Thanks K-Hits! Semoochie, so you really think that folks buy a record and listen to just that one song they heard on the radio? Why do you think that the single eventually died as a mass consumer format and was only really brought back by cheapskates who downloaded mp3s? Is it because many entire albums were good? Perhaps your generalization is true with the more pathetic crap, but many albums were deep with fine songs and helped FM radio gain an audience when it was an infant. Many producers still created filler, but really, true artists made -- and still make -- albums, not just singles. Steve Martin, "King Tut"

from 1954 to 1975 there were over 5,000 songs that made it into the top 40 charts, pop, r&b, ect. If an oldies station played only the the songs that were hits that day. They could cover a lot of music not top ten as well as top 10 and you will never hear the same 500 songs over and over.

I find that I'm defending myself for things I never said: I can understand the concept of hearing a song or 2 by an artist and buying the album to hear more songs by that artist. I was talking about being deluged on the radio by one song after another that most people have never heard. Even new music is usually presented as part of an overall familiar setting. I'm not saying that some people won't occasionally listen for something different on a large scale. I just don't think anyone much beyond college age is likely to do it very often.

Wannabe, not only is talking over the intro and hitting the post great radio, but it keeps you and the listeners from hearing Mr. Fred rub one out or carry groceries or whatever the hell he is doing to ruin that fine horn line. Semoochie, I gotcha, and I understand the danger of spinning too much of what was referred to at KBPS as "Sergei Obscurov." On that point we do agree. I have always thought that in a pop based format, two or three an hour is not gonna bug a soul, and actually would be embraced. I would never underestimate the desires or sophistication of the audience. I strongly argue that in formats that featured "an era" they could include many more cuts because of almost unanimous listener familiarity with an entire album. It has worked for decades with the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Pink Floyd and more than a few others. If you look at the charts, as I did obsessively once upon a time, you will find that sometimes a huge song on the radio was never released as a 45. "Isn't She Lovely" is far too good a cut to languish unplayed, would you not agree? Most of radio agreed pretty quickly after "Songs in the Key of Life" was released and it is in rotation to this day. Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan both saw little chart action in proportion to their influence. This is why I find it tragic that I never hear "Waterfall" or "I Want You" or dozens of others on K-Hits. These are very familiar songs, but I never hear them. Here is one I humbly offer to Bob Harlow: "Lincoln County" by Dave Davies of the Kinks. It was intended for a scrapped solo album, and only released as a single on Pye in the UK in 1968. For years, it was a hard cut to find, but the jaunty melody and the local tie-in might make it fun to bring back around. Yes, Roger, I totally agree that there are other Raspberries, but heck, that was perfect for the moment. Perhaps it is vainglory, but it is groovy to think that folks read our spiels and react to 'em. If this is true, thanks! While we are talking make out music, since "That 70s Show" melded Cheap Trick's "Surrender" with Big Star's "In the Street," could we possibly imagine a world where they are given their due? C'mon, Alex Chilton was in the Box Tops for chrissakes. I am only asking for a legendary Memphis band with every bit as much talent and tragedy as Badfinger to gain a slot or two, here and there. Though I want to, I'm not asking for "I Am the Cosmos" by Chris Bell, even though that song kicks ass. p.s. I am digging the Isaac Hayes. It is always great to hear the the classic Soul! p.p.s. if you want a classic laugh, how about "Lilly the Pink" by the Scaffold (or any Bonzo Dog Band -- especially with a band called, "Death Cab For Cutie" around!)

Amen brother! "She's a Fool" is stellar, and as a performance, frankly, superior to the others. Every listener knows what has aged well, and frankly, what has not, or they wouldn't be ignoring the radio in droves and living in iPodville. Why embarrass an artist by harping on their throwaway crap (e.g. Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark Five, Jan & Dean, Turtles, et al) when they did more durable, but perhaps less familiar material? Some jazz stations are a good touchstone for this line of thought. Big tune or not, if a better performance of a lesser know tune is available, they shed the best light on the artist and feature their best work. Hindsight is supposed to give us insight, right? "What time is it? Who did that song? What's next? The high today will be?" No kidding! I have heard more than that a little here and there, but it does seem almost universally reflexive, doesn't it? If that is all you've got, well, bless the folks who make that much work for 'em. There are guys on 106.7 who deserve to get credit for doing homework and sharing more than rote answers and obvious index cards. Of course, Craig instantly comes to mind, but every jock there has shown some research fueled by passion for the artists. I am a geek, so I always forgive a host who tells me something I already knew that wasn't completely obvious. Whether I learn anything new or not, I am just happy that they share it as freely as any of us would with a friend. After all, that is the true spirit of radio. Underrated songs, volume fifteen: Traffic, "Berkshire Poppies" & "Hole in My Shoe" Fleetwood Mac, "Spare Me A Little of Your Love" Dave Clark Five, "Looking In" Beatles, "Don't Pass Me By" Searchers, "When You Walk in the Room" Beach Boys, "Wild Honey" & "Sail On, Sailor" (classic Carl)

Roger, alright, I'll make the "Wild Honey" for "Susie Cincinnati" trade, and add "Cotton Fields" -- to my knowledge, the last Lead Belly tune to have charted, and the last Beach Boys single released in mono. There are a few songs on "Sunflower" that deserve attention too. Semoochie, you are absolutely right, a version appears on 20/20. "Cabinessence" was one of several pieces from the "Smile" project that found themselves on later releases. I believe that it is easily the heaviest bass-line that Carole Kaye ever played. Thank heavens Brian finally got to make the record! You know, "Magic Transistor Radio" dovetails nicely with Nilsson's "The Point" and more than a few tunes from Bruce Haack, Vince Guaraldi and Joe Raposo. Did someone say there was a station that played anything? There you go, a perfect hour of regression for the children of the 1970s. :0)

I always thought some of the Beach Boys album stuff deserved as much airplay as the Beatles not charters! Always hated it when B sides never made it on to albums, so if you never got the 45, the songs are impossible to find. "I guess I just wasn't made for these times". A beautiful lament. Another great "B" you won't hear unless you have the record....... Little Miss Go Go.. Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Fun to talk about some of these songs. I'm sure somebody slips on a few of these gems/dogs from time to time, but I only know two people who were open enough to play any of them on occasion. Ah yes, Roger, "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" is one of my favorites. "They say I got brains, but they aint doing me no good..." is a line that the ego driven stars of the time would never have touched -- even in his own band! The Theremin line that follows the flutes is just a small part of an arrangement that is utterly brilliant. Gary Lewis! Nobody touched the album, "New Directions" when it came out. It is probably my favorite of his releases. It has moments that vividly reflect "Pet Sounds" -- a record that was fresh in the minds of the session musicians. Like many of the Lewis releases, it has a few utterly unknown pop chestnuts from great songwriters and features the "Wrecking Crew" with the now legendary production of Snuff Garrett. I would put "A Little Love From You" up against any of his other classic tongue in cheek cuts. "What She Thinks About" by John Sebastian is another cut -- like some of the aforementioned Gary Lewis -- that has been ripped off wholesale by newer bands, and yet, is still an unknown gem.

I dare K-Hits to play Jack Wild's "Wait for Summer." That was a one hit wonder and I've not heard it since 1970.

The only top 40 showing for The Clique was "Sugar On Sunday". "Superman" charted by Herbie Mann a decade later.

Edsel, once again, you rock! I am quite pleased that between the two of us, there are at least two copies of the "Sugar on Sunday"/"Superman" 45 in our extended family. The spindle is dead -- long live the spindle! I think the drums were burned so hot into the vinyl that it the record makes the reverbed artillery rhythm of the Dave Clark Five seem almost understated. Yes, I concede, it was a B-side, so perhaps I ought to revise my vote for the one hit wonder. Mrs. M, I imagine virtually everything has been reissued on CD. I think Music Millenium still has a pretty comprehensive oldies section. If it is in print somewhere globally, what they do not have, they will gladly order. As reissue labels go, Sundazed and Rhino are good places to start. Other than Evilbay, my bet is that Crossroads is the best for the original vinyl. Looking over the list Steve brought us, there are many that have been on K-Hits -- including quite a few of the lesser known cuts. Though not exactly in heavy rotation, I am pretty sure I have heard Tin Tin's "Toast and Marmalade for Tea" and to their credit, that is digging pretty deep for a great pop tune. Not too obscure, but I love Desmond Dekker and the Aces, so "Israelites" will get my vote. It is probably pretty familiar to a lot of younger Portlanders because it was featured in Gus Van Sant's film, "Drugstore Cowboy."

I TOLD you Bobby "Boris" Pickett needed more airplay.... He does the "Monster Mash" no more. Bobby "Boris" Pickett, whose dead-on Boris Karloff impression propelled the Halloween anthem to the top of the charts in 1962, making him one of pop music's most enduring one-hit wonders, has died of leukemia. He was 69. Pickett died Wednesday night at the West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital, his daughter, Nancy, and his sister, Lynda, were at Pickett's bedside. "Monster Mash" hit the Billboard chart three times: when it debuted in 1962, reaching No. 1 the week before Halloween; again in August 1970, and for a third time in May 1973. The resurrections were appropriate for a song where Pickett gravely intoned the forever-stuck-in-your-head chorus: "He did the monster mash. ... It was a graveyard smash." Pickett used the impersonation in a nightclub act and when performing with his band the Cordials. A bandmate convinced Pickett they needed to do a song to showcase the Karloff voice, and "Monster Mash" was born - "written in about a half-hour," said Dr. Demento. The recording, done in a couple of hours, featured a then-unknown piano player named Leon Russell and a backing band christened The Crypt-Kickers. It was rejected by four major labels before Gary Paxton, lead singer on the Hollywood Argyles' novelty hit "Alley Oop," released "Monster Mash" on his own label. The instant smash became a sort-of Christmas carol for the pumpkin and ghoul set. In a 1996 interview with People magazine, Pickett said he never grew tired of it: "When I hear it, I hear a cash register ringing." While Pickett never re-created its success, his "Monster's Holiday," a Christmas follow-up, reached No. 30 in December 1962. And "Graduation Day" hit No. 80 in June 1963. He continued performing through his final gig in November. He remained in demand for Halloween performances, including a memorable 1973 show where his bus broke down outside Frankenstein, Mo.

Littlesongs - it's by chance (and some kind of musical taste at an early age) that saved that 'The Clique' single. When in my early teens, I received a good sized box of 45's from the aformentioned cousin, and listened to them all, forming a "keep" and "toss" pile. Maybe a third of them I thought had cool songs on them; the rest were used for skeet shooting with my pellet gun out in the back yard. I get a tight feeling in my gut today thinking of all the great songs that I have since come to appreciate from the '60s that I probably shattered with my Daisy air rifle. Speaking of "keepers"...one of the singles I saved was a song called "2086", by an artist I cannot recall. Don't know if it was the A or B side, but it's a funky futuristic pop song that must of gotten some local airplay since it was purchased in Vancouver. Anyone ever heard of it?

Another release by Pickett was called "Blood Bank Blues". His character was bummed out because the Blood Bank was closed on weekends and he needed to make a withdrawl.

In addition to The Crypt-Kicker 5, Leon Russell was one of the studio musicians making up Gary Lewis & The Playboys.
