So I've been checking the Charlie morning show lately, what a "paint by numbers" show. The "theme of the morning" stuff is just painful to hear unfold. Is that the best Charlie can offer? Very grade B.

How can, anyone, think that's the way to go?

I like the morning show, but one thing Im starting to notice is that the music is starting to get flat. Woke up this morning and heard "higher love" By Steve Winwod. ACK!! Come on Charlie do we really need to hear Jewel and Sugar Ray??The reason why I always had Charlie on was to get away from that crap and hear some interesting songs tha havent been played to death. Hearing that snaggle TOOTH jewel sing makes me want to vomit. Ive also noticed that they are Playing WAAAAY too much Alanis Morisette! I think their PD has been listening to KINK because at times I feel like Charlie is turning into KINK. Charlie is still by far the best station on the dial, but they may be losing the title with some of the recent music selections. THey keep bragging about the random playlist yet, Im hearing the most overplayed non random songs.

The morning show is called "Dr. Doug & Skippy". There's really no other explanation for why that show is lame other than an overweight, middle-aged DJ calling himself a "Dr, and a guy who looks like a high-school sophmore who decided the name he would go with in his radio career is "Skippy". If you need a reason not to listen, thats it. No offense "Snackbar"

Wow... bitterness overload, "Bonger"! Kind of ironic, a 420-themed screen name ripping other peoples choice of names.

I listen to it a bit... they make a good team. I do find myself dividing my morning listening time, however. If a song I don't want to hear or a commercial comes on I split.

sorry, but a debate on the Charlie morning show about how it's a good idea to ask your date for some personal info so you can google them, just to make sure they're not a sex criminal, is not interesting or funny to me. I don't go to a couple of djs in a control room for advice like that. I know they're just trying to have content, but it comes off kinda lame. It runs me off. I'd rather hear a tune, or some actual humor.

just my opinion, I know it may not be yours.

The fact that you are all complaining about topics on the charlie Morning show means that YOU are listening! Mission accomplished! Id much rather listen to a live a local morning show than some stupid unfunny syndicated show like Adan Corolla. Or you could listen to Marconi talk about American Idol for 4 hours on a station that has completely lost touch of its demo.

Have to admit, I do listen in the morning for the talk. If I want music I'll put on my iPod. I do switch between stations now, something I've never done. I listen to Charlie 97.1, KUFO 101.1 and The Buzz 105.1. almost equally.

(And I've never heard the thing.)

It's totally fun to yak about the suckage. Same thing for anything that's new. Throw up darn near anything and you've get numbers for a while as people check it out.

Some of them are gonna like it too, no matter what.

I listen to morning radio for talk, not music. I have an ipod for music. I switch between Charlie and The Buzz. Although the music on Charlie is much more listenable on Charlie, I can't take the music on the Buzz,it is brutal!

You said you listen in the morning for talk. Then you said the music is listenable on Charlie but you can't take the music on the Buzz.

If you listen for talk, then why are you switching between two music stations instead of listening to the talk that you said listen for? Is it just so you can come here and complain about them even if you don't like them or it is not what you listen for?

If you want talk, then complain about your talk choices.

I see Dr. Doug and Skippy doin their thing everday. They really care about what they put out over the air. You know... And their show production is tight. haha.

The only drawback to the show is that I have to pay attention to american idol now... Its enough to make me wanna stay in the world of active rock.

Dr. Doug and Skip is maybe the most female demographic-targeted radio show in Portland. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but when I am listening to it, I feel my penis slowly shinking from all of the estrogen.

Hey Seanmcradio KUFO talks more about American Idol than any female targeted station in portland. Talk about a station that lost its testicles- KUFO! "the only station that doesn't really rock!
I think Charlie is by far the best station in portland and has the best morning show. One thing I like about the morning show is that they are not doing some stupid Celebrity update about Brittney Spears every 10 minutes.

Yeah, It would be nice to be at the wheel over at KUFO. I hear the marconni show talking about American Idol as much as we do. But I cant really hate on them too much, I understand what it takes to put a show togeather. Alot of thought, duck tape, and the fancy production helps. His show sounds tight.

As for Idol, it's one of those things (especially this year) that people dont have to know alot about to relate to.

The Sanjaya kid is helping to homogonize the entertainment industry. In addition to making me uncomfortable when he sings.

SKIPPY.

NUFF SAID

Sorry Snackbar but...f'n Skippy. And ya know, calling yourself a "Dr" may be ok if you have 4 mechanical arms, or you can pull off a wicked windmill dunk, or you make it your life's ambition to destroy Austin Powers...but when you're a chubby 30 something on the radio...it doesn't fly.

And anyone who mentions Demento gets a swift kick to the junk.

"Ratings or not" are you kidding me,that is the only thing corporate radio understands these days.Nothing against Squid,Gustav,Craig the dog faced boy and Pork chop,Marconi,Cort and Fatboy.......Not exactly names that make you stop and pay attention or demand respect.IMHO these days ratings are what it is all about, not what you call yourself. If it is so bad they will tank and realize they must change their names.

Note to Beano and Shyguy: There's no place on this (or any) board for these types of accusations. They are, at best, classless, and at worst, slanderous.

Tom....written comes under the rubric of "libel".....BUT....are unlikely to be actionable if there is any truth to such remarks. Any plaintiff would have to be sure there were not a goodly number of witnesses willing and able to testify to cocaine usage.

And secondly PK could be considered a public figure and as such his ability to successfully sue for either libel or slander would be doubtful.

As for "classless", do you honestly expect any class to be shown on a public BB? Methinks not.

Radio in general is a pretty classless place to work period! Radio and class does not go together. Working in radio reminds me a lot like working at a car dealership. Plenty of slime balls, backstabbers, and pretty much EVERYONE will shit on another person just to get ahead or get promoted. I'm also sure that radio has its fare share of Coke heads, it comes with the territory, and i'm not talking about Coca Cola. Most people in radio who have been in the business for longer than 10 years have a bad coke problem, are a full blown alcoholic, or has some sort of chemical dependancy that seriously messes them up!

Most people in radio who have been in the business for longer than 10 years have overcome the alcohol and chemical dependencies, or they couldn't survive. I could "out" a substantial portion of the radio folks in Portland over the age of 35, but I'll stick with "Hi, I'm Terry, and I'm an alcoholic." Sober 26 years.

Roger's low opinion and distain for the folks in radio are undoubtedly a significant contribution to the reason he "could never get back in." And with such a low opinion of us, I wonder that he ever wanted to. Or why he even comes near this board for that matter.

Be very careful with that broad brush, Roger. Every industry has its share of bad apples. I've seen a few, too...but not to the extent you imply. The business will weed most of them out eventually...It's been that way for a long time.

From APRIL 19th BunsofSteel POST:

"Radio in general is a pretty classless place to work period! Most people in radio who have been in the business for longer than 10 years have a bad coke problem, are a full blown alcoholic, or has some sort of chemical dependancy that seriously messes them up!"

My comment was directed at an earlier mention of Slimeball Car Salesmen of which I had the pleasure of working with many. It's how they are taught!

Now I do take offense with Teri's Post which included....

"Roger's low opinion and distain for the folks in radio are undoubtedly a significant contribution to the reason he "could never get back in." And with such a low opinion of us, I wonder that he ever wanted to. Or why he even comes near this board for that matter."

I can't believe you have formulated that opinion of me. Because I am critical of some of the maketing and programming decisions that you hold as flawless? Because I have a belief that A station can be live and locally focused and do well? Because I think in many cases, the overuse of VTs and syndication exists only to improve the margin and make the shareholder happy rather than being the difference between being in the red or in the black? Maybe you object if I comment that some stations micromanage the clock and feel like they need to put all the words in a talents mouth. |

NEVER.... NEVER.... Have I shown a disdain for the folks in radio. I certainly disagree with some aspects. You have an opinion, I have one as well. Yours is not completely correct, nor is mine. I think I make some valid observations from time to time. Now if you make a station a presentation, and every aspect of it is implemented you would consider it a resounding success. If only portions of your plan were used would you feel a failure? If nothing was implemented would you think the plan sucked and throw it all away, or save it for another time and/or place? Keep some parts of it? Only a big headed egoist would think all of their ideas are flawless. I respect what you have done in the industry, but I don't believe for one minute that your beliefs are the only way and any other idea is just a certain level of failure. You tell me why any disagreement is construed as negative.
I think Station Xs playlist is too small...

OOOhhhh negative thought.... BAD, EVIL, NOT A TEAM PLAYER, HOW DARE I. I think there is an over emphasis on linercards, voicetracks, syndicated programming... I think some stations have playlists that are too small. I think Frank Bell is a lousy Programmer. I think Dennis Constantine is on the right track.... I think I am passionate about the industry, I love the Pacific Northwest, am sorry Salem couldn't support KSND, hate that the Corps moved all of the Tacoma Stations to Seattle, think Clear Channel could be more competitive in Centralia, believe that dumping KISN was flat stupid, think Lonview could use a kick ass, takeover, local oriented Live station, and think that Cheryl does't have to be such a hard ass at The Boss. Why do I come here? To talk radio with the people involved and interested in radio in the region. To crack a few jokes and maybe give someone a smile. To share some thoughts, see if any of my viewpoints are shared by others. To see if I think along the same lines as others. To discuss differing opinions. To get a little help, or give a little help.

How badly you misread me. I think you read my post but not the ones leading up to it. You will find no one with more passion for the ART of Broadcasting. Yes I have a level of contempt for the people who have no respect for the ART of broadcasting. Maybe that is why you have such disdain for me. Do you see no art or need for talent in broadcasting? Do you only see the dollar signs?

I think your commentary of me was 180 degrees of the mark. Your attempted isolation of me by referring to the PDX group as "us", like I am NOT a Broadcast Professional, have no right to express my thoughts, and should be banned for expressing my viewpoints.

Despite your many accomplishments, I have to ask, who made you supreme ruler? I would love to chat face to face sometime, but I bet that I would be more likely to understand your position, that you would be to think than even one point I might make has any validity. Ah well, Someone as lofty as you, would not want to waste their time on some outsider like me.

Out of curiosity... My first radio job was in 1975. 31+ years later, If I still didn't have the passion, and desire, didn't have an interest in the industry, and didn't think I had usable ideas for the business, why would I spend time on this or any other radio site?

Do you visit other sites to offer up your opinions. The car dealer chat board? The short order cooks board? Have any thoughts on other industries? If so, do you share them?

Do you smile? Do you laugh? Do you have a sense of humor? Are you one that believes a work place can't be fun because it's called work?

Geez, lighten up! Again, go back, read the bunsofsteel post of the 19th then read mine, and tell me where you and mark andrews see my disdain for people in radio, and a low opinion of "us"... If I never work in the industry again, I will always be part of the "US". If you want, you can think of me as the creepy second cousin with developmental disabilities that no one ever sees because Cousin Minnie is too ashamed to bring me to the family reunions, BUT I WILL ALWAYS BE PART OF THE "US" GROUP.

OK, Roger... Mea culpa!

You certainly pass the passion test! And I agree with almost everything you said in that "how dare I" paragraph, except for the Frank Bell comment (don't know who he is...)

I'll blame it on a shorter attention span as I get older...

Cheers...and keep speaking your mind!

See....Even Danner admits to being a drunk 25 years ago!
Just proves my point that radio can really fuck you up! One day you're the hottest thing in the city, the next day you're on the street begging for spair change on Burnside! And its not like Being a dj is the most skillfull job, pretty much anyone can do it! Heck, my Dog Sparkles would be an excellent dj.

Ok, I want to know if there are any ex-DJ's that you've seen bumming money from strangers on sidewalks.

By the way Craig, the comment about my dog Sparkles being compared to a dj was not directed at you. You have much more charisma than Sparkles.

The lack of quotes was a glaring omission on my part. Though I don't agree with some of your positions, I respect that you take the time to post and discuss them, as well as your success in the industry.

One of my worst experiences that I had over the years was with a PD who killed a long running feature of mine. I wasn't so pissed over the fact that he killed it as I was at his response when I questioned as to why. The exact reply was "Because I said so, and in the future clear everything with me before you air it." Sorry, You might say that to an 8 year old, but it doesn't fly in a work environment.

On a final note, not that anyone gives a rip, but I want to avoid being "TREVORIZED"...

I am at the point in my life and career where lifestyle is more important than "just any old gig". So in my time on the beach, I have passed on more than a few offers. Some might think it odd, but I would rather do nights in Olympia, be a 30 hour a week part timer in Bellingham, or weekends in Portland for 9 bucks an hour and pay my own move, than PD the Oldies station in Wisconsin, or the AC station in North Carolina.

Sure that sounds insane to some, but for me it's never been about the money, never will be. It's about family, friends, lifestyle. Things that exist in the PNW, not in Wisconsin.

What depresses me is the email that says they loved my presentation, but went with someone else because they were closer. If they said you suck, we hired the intern, That I can deal with. Need someone who can start tomorrow, I can deal with that as well. I applied for WA and OR jobs because they suited my wants and needs, not because it would be a neat-o, cool place to live for awhile. Unless a station needs someone tomorrow,
(few rarely do) I don't expect to be weeded out based on my current location. Don't like the demo?
Your opinion and I'll cross you off the list.
Love it, but don't bother to contact me to see if we can make it work? Then I get a bit peeved.

Sure it seems likeI show some bitterness from time to time.
Yep, sometimes a post seems funnier to the writer than it does to the reader.
You bet a post can be misinterpreted.

Some of us were merciless with Trevor, Jacquel, DJFREEEESH, but while sometimes the posts were scathing, there was also an intent by many to be helpful and responsive. Stupid though the freeeesh posts were, they did lead to some commentary regarding stations mentioned. Some thoughts were quite valid. freesh need to participate in the threads, his actions were grade school antics.

My intent is not to come across as bitter. I hate no one. I will, however, freely express a thought on a topic of interest, and while I may dispute the message, I won't dispute the right of the messenger.

(shut up you old windbag) ;-)

Always keep in mind that commercial radio is an entertainment media in the business of selling advertising based on listenership.

Add "tendency to overwork" followed by health problems to the list of things people employed in the radio business have to deal with eventually.
