I want this war scaled down. A lot of people do.

This has been interesting so far. The clear majority no longer supports a blank check. The White House does not want to admit failure. So it's an impasse for the moment.

Nwokie - comparing this to Japan is insane at best. We never used shoddy intelligence and lies to justify invading Japan, did we? No, we were attacked and fought a legally (within our Constitution) waged war. There was a purpose, SOMETHING to fight for there.

What's the purpose now? What is there really to fight for? What, pray tell, are we DOING there?

Essentially we are fighting because we have a harder time admitting our (P)resident stepped on his dick, than we do watching people die.

Good thing that's changing!

Actually, there was lots of bad intelligence about Japan and Germany, that helped lead to the war, and In Korea it was criminal how no one saw the invasion og the N coming, and of the chinese coming in after Mcarther made his landing .

Most of the intel about Iraq was reasonably correct, and we had every right and responsibility to remove Sadddam.

Oil or Diamonds...guess we know were out government put's it's priority! How can they say we need to be in Irag when they say nothing of the Africa conflict! Ignoring it won't make it go away.

Just a little vent there....please return to your regular irregular posts on the thread topic until Herb hijacks it and "HAMS" it up!

Africa, or most of it, is not part of the United States national interest. Until or unless we become energy independent, the middle ease is of vital interest to the US.

I never see people out protesting with placards that say " Keep the war going!"

And Nwokie, you're just plain wrong too much.

I understand "National Interest" so ya great......guess the signal we put out to everyone then is save our oil but we don't care about the loss of human lives anywhere else that don't feed the need for fossil fuel! Sure Saddam was a tyrant and needed to be removed....take a trip to Africa you fool and things there a ten times as bad so why don't we do something....i'll tell you....no oil down there....just conflict diamonds!

Very few of the people being killed in Iraq, are being killed by US soldiers, their being killed by criminals. The US presence is helping the Iraqi govt deal with the criminal element.

There are by far more violent deaths in the US each day, and I dont see any protesters out there protesting that, or claiming we're in a civil war.

Bad intelligence about Japan and Germany? Why exactly is it that we embargoed any fuel or metal going to Japan? We KNEW of their imperialistic ways, hell we were helping China well before Pearl Harbor. If anything we underestimated their desire to conquer. And EVERYONE knew what the dilli-o was with the Germans. As far as China getting involved with the Korean War, Mao told everyone who would listen that if the UN coalition pushed north of that parallel that China would get involved. MacArthur was so hellbent on being GI Joe and showing the world that he was the shit that he went ahead and did it anyways. Not long after that, Truman stripped him of his power and he retired.

Also, how in the sam hell could ANYONE tell us that the intelligence on Iraq, at least the intelligence the Bush administration used to justify the invasion, was anywhere NEAR correct? What am I missing here?

We initiated an Oil embargo on Japan in the Summer of 41, we were still shipping scrap metal there when Japan attacked us.

Roosevelt fired the Commander of the Pacific fleet for behaving too agressive towards the japanese, his replacement figured he needed to just keep his ships close to pearl and not do anything to offend the Japanese. We put a very small forcd on Wake island, should have put somthing there capable of defending it or nothing. Nothing was done in the Phillipines to prepare, heck McArther sat on his rear for almost a day after Pearl.

Roosevelt was also desperate to AVOID conflict with the Japanese unless absolutely necessary. The country was not right yet economically, even with Lend-Lease in action with Britain and the Soviet Union, and the American public was VERY pro-isolationist and wanted to stay the hell out of the war. Even AFTER the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, a lot of Americans wanted to avoid conflict in Europe like the plague. That, of course, changed with Hitler declaring war on the United States.
